My eyes opened the instant I woke up and I squinted slightly at the strain on my eyes. Some sunlight made its way through the closed window shades and dimly lite the room. I rolled over, expecting to see Derek, but he was gone. He was probably packing his things upstairs.
Today was the day, my mother and everyone else thought I was going to a boarding school in California, the same one Derek had been going to it. Derek told me a little but about it. There is a tutor who taught all the things I would have leard at school, we had our lessons in the afternoon. In the morning we would be training until lunch. On weekends we wouldn't do anything really because we couldn't leave the academy.
I pulled myself off the bed and shuffled over to the door, opened it, then trudged upstairs. Dalila and Kayla were typing furiously on their phones while they sat on the couch. Dylan and David were watching Barney, Steffan was asleep in Sara's arms, Tommy, Dalila's brother, had his eyes glued to his DS game, Dalila's parents and my my mister were enjoying coffee in the kitchen, talking about finding new places to live. This was the first calm moment in this house that I've seen. I sat down next to Dalila and she smiled at me, a sad smile.
"Do you need help packing?" She asked me, not wanting me to be packing at all but she would help regardless. I sighed and nodded.
"Yeah, I do." We stood up and Dalila grabbed a bag from Sara, who was kind enough to give it to me. It was a bright green duffle bag. Green was my favorite color so I liked it. We made out way back down stairs and started taking clothes from the bags and folding them before putting them in the duffle bag. I picked out one outfitwhich I thought was cute and put it together with my boots and some other things. Dalila approved instantly, I guessed I would be good at the whole putting together outfits thing.
I started to actually look at the things I got. I had a hoodie, four sweaters, ten shirts, five pairs of different colored jeans, three scarves, sneakers, boots, three beanies, and plenty of jewlry. Dalila had done well in my opinion. I grabbed my book bag, I noticed Dalila had gotten everything out of my locker for me. I found my hair brush, some mascara, and a friendship necklace we gave each other when we were eight. I out it on with the other necklace I wore and smiled at her. I looked back in the bag and smiled seeing my charger and head phones in a pocket but a wide grin sprea across my face when I saw something else. The school had lent out computers to everyone in my science class and we got to bring them home. They wouldn't mind if one went missing.
"Hey, now I can Skype you." I smiled at her, holding up the computer before shoving it back inside. Dalila's grin widened and we both burst out laughing. We packed the last of the things and Dalila straightened up.
"Oh! One more thing!" She ran upstairs then a few minutes later returned with a square shaped present tied with a bow. "Happy early birthday." She smiled brightly at me. That's right, my birthday was about a week from now. I smiled back at her and opened the gift, beaming when I saw a Sleeping With Sirens CD. She knew I loved them.
"Thank you so much, Dalila." I beamed, hugging her tight.
"Hey, think of me when you listen to it." We both laughed and Derek called my name from the top of the stairs. I sighed and we both took small, slow steps up the stairs.
At the top of the stairs, Derek was waiting for me and Dalila. I dragged my duffle bag on the ground and hit hit against the stairs. He offered to take it but I just shook my head and dropped both my bags on the door mat. I hugged everyone and the twins even started crying and wouldn't let go of my legs. I hugged them both and heard a beeping noise coming from outside. I looked out the window to see a car waiting outside with Jared in the drivers seat and a girl with sunny blond hair sitting next to him. She turned in my direction with piercing green eyes, she had bangs that brimmed right over her eyes which were squinted just slightly. She seemed to dislike the look of me.
"Come on, it's time to leave." Derek smiled at me slightly, I nodded and gave Dalila and my mother one last hug then walked out the door, to the car. Derek and I threw both our bags into the trunk and climbed into the car. Derek scooted closer to me in his seat and took my hand in his. I felt my chest tighten up and slipped my hand out of his. Jared turned around and smiled at me.
"Hey, Astella." Jared glanced over at Derek and Derek started to scoot away from me slowly like nothing happened. "I don't think you've met Raleigh yet." Jared turned toward the girl with thin blond hair and she looked up from her iPod before turning around to look at me. She seemed to study my face before giving me a sharp stare, almost as if I was staring into the eyes of an angry python.
"So this is the so called 'fighter'? She some what reminds me of a bug, about to be crushed at any moment. She would be easily picked off in my opinion." Raleigh's green eyes shimmered challengingly. I narrowed my eyes and opened my mouth to say something but before I could Derek nudged me and shook his head. I clamped my mouth shut and just stared back at her.
"Haha! Wow, got you're little boyfriend to tell you how to act? Sad, isn't it?" Raleigh chuckled and I clenched my fist. I don't know if it was her willingness to piss me off or that off setting laugh which just shut whatever sense I had off. I gripped her light hair in my fist and yanked down hard.
"Wow, you really must be a stranger, because no one tells me how to act. Now I suggest you shut that mouth of yours or there will be more than a few words being said." I yanked at her delicate hair one more time before letting go and sinking down in my seat.
"You two should pipe down, we've got a long way to go then you guys will be spending just about every moment together, cool it." Derek snapped, annoyed at the tension in the air. He wasn't going to deal with any crap from anyone for so many days in this small car. It was going to seem like years with Raleigh but I figured I could hold up. Everyone settled I to their seats awkwardly then Jared started to drive out of the sub division and onto the road. Jared smiled slightly.
"California here we come ."
