For saying your age you should say "J'ai ___ ans". My French teacher lived in France for basically all her life, so I think she knows the better way to say your age.

je suis agé(e) de ___ ans ou/or j'ai ___ans ... mais "je suis __ an" n'est absolument pas français ^^
