((Whups, forgot about my other character until now! I'll do her to catch up. Also, since Nan is the only one from D5, should I just keep going?))
Katelyn rose and stretched, looking out over the seas of District 4. She sat and thought for a minute. She thought about her current boyfriend, Fain, and how she would break his heart at the reaping that morning. She thought about how she had a good chance of being chosen this year. She wasn't the oldest there, but she had taken out a lot of tesserae because her father forced her to. They didn't need too, but her father wanted her to have a high chance of being picked out of the glass ball. Katelyn didn't want to be in the Hunger Games. But if her name was drawn, like her gut was jumping around telling her it would, she had to make her father proud.
She wandered around the house, fixing breakfast for herself, wondering what she would wear. As the resident hearbreaker in her class, she always had to look drop-dead gorgeous. Finally, she selected a one-shouldered teal dress that wrapped to her frame and highlighted her eyes. She put a few curls in her blonde hair and was ready to go. Her father would already be at the reaping. She opened the door and walked out into the crowded street of people.
"Katelyn! Hey, Kate! Kaaaatelyyyyyn!" Looking around for the sound of the voice, she spotted her soon-to-be-ex boyfriend, Fain, bobbing above the crowd, shouting her name. Talk about embarrassing. It was one of the reasons she was breaking up with him so quickly, after only one date. He was like a dog, following her around. The sooner she broke his heart the better. Letting out a small groan that was lost in the clamor of the streets, she pulled her head high, and walked over to Fain. "Hi Katelyn, there you are! You look beautiful." Even his face was puppy doggish, and his long yellow hair didn't help with the golden retriever thing.
"Hey, Fain, we need to talk," Her every word was toned to let him know something was wrong. She was good at that. The stupid grin faded off his face, and he looked down, shaking hair out of his eyes, like a puppy caught chewing the furniture. "You're a nice guy, but you act like a puppy dog, and you embarrass me. It's over," she said coldly, then turned on her heel and walked away without a second thought. She took her place in a roped off area with the other 15 year old girls, many of whom were chattering with eachother. The noise quieted down as Crystal Walsh, the District 4 escort for as long as Katelyn could remember, hopped up to the stage and excitedly took the microphone.
"Welcome, welcome, welcome!" she chirped into the mic. The usual Hunger Games stuff was said, about how the districts rebelled against the Capitol and the Hunger Games was their punishment. The way they say it, you'd think it was our fault our great-great-grandparents or whatever rebelled.
"Katelyn Ferris!" The name broke Katelyn out of her reverie. What? I was called? I guess my gut was right. She barely had enough time to set her jaw and pull back her shoulders before she was surrounded by peacekeepers and led up to the stage. The rest of the reapings went by in a blur. Katelyn didn't pay attention. She didn't want to meet these kids that she might have to kill later. She was led to a room where she sat by herself for an hour.
Her father wouldn't come see her, in his mind she was the reason his wife was dead. His wife, Mina, had died giving birth to Katelyn. Her past boyfriends wouldn't come, she had broken all their hearts. Her friends wouldn't come. Perhaps that hurt the most. She knew her father and exes wouldn't come, and she knew her friends only acted like they liked her, but she had thought- she had hoped- that at least one of them would come to wish her luck, to say goodbye. But no one came. So Katelyn spent the hour alone. Knowing when she left this room, she would be mobbed by cameras, and never be completely alone until during the Hunger Games, and then everyone would be watching her, she cried.
She cried harder than she did the first time her father hit her and told her he hated her. She cried harder than when she found out Nick, her previous boyfriend and the reason she had broken so many boys hearts, was cheating on her with 3 other girls. She cried for her mother, whom she never knew, for her life, where she was hated so much, and for her future, where she knew she would end up dead. After 40 minutes, she stopped herself and wiped her tears away with the back of her hand, sniffling. When the 60 minutes was up, she was escorted out of the room out of the room by peacekeepers, and flash bulbs going off in her face the entire walk to the train, stood on the platform for a minute, then stepped into the girls train.
She was lead down the hallway by an avox and shown to her room. Katelyn walked to the small window and looked out, a few late tears leaking down her face. She loved the ocean. She loved playing in it, fishing in it, exploring it. And it was likely she was never going to see it again. The sudden lurch of the train threw her off balance, but it wasn't any different than being on a boat. She flopped down on her bed, and fell into a restless sleep.
