He's still a bit nervous but will go up and down stairs now both by himself and when I ask him to. He does hesitate occasionally but I haven't had to haul him up in several days.

Skoll decided coats are for sissies and greatly protests when I put his on him. I will need to locate a coat he can't squirm out of so easily, for his own good, since it'll only get colder from here.

SNOW!!! We got a few inches that day and a few more today and he is enjoying it greatly. His first reaction to his first American snow (I'm sure he had plenty in Canada) was "ewwww, cold and wet and you expect me to go out THERE?" but then I guess he realized what it was and got very silly and playful. He likes to bury his nose in it and then prance around with a small mound on the tip of his nose.

He still thinks cats are fun to chase but I'm starting to be able to distract him mid-focus and then he leaves my poor (very angry) cat alone. He's also starting to be able to be put off with a hiss from her; I think the last time he ignored her hiss she smacked him a good one. She's continuing to regain her old confidence and is currently sleeping about 3ft from his crate (he either hasn't noticed her or decided against reacting, he's still awake). He's been tucked in for the night for about an hour but seems to prefer remaining awake until I stop making noise on the computer. He hasn't screamed in his crate in several days, any barking (usually at the cat) is easily silenced with a "Quiet!" and he now willingly goes in and out of it so I think he's remembered that he is indeed crate trained. Last night he tucked himself in at around 10:30... was petting him when all of a sudden he got up and flopped in there instead of laying on me.

Stairs he still hesitates sometimes on. For the most part, "upstairs" and "downstairs" as commands are what work best. He'll go up and down the 1st set of steps on his own as well, and if he's expecting food after a walk he'll climb the 2nd set (that's the scary one) as well. He does airplane ears and makes it plain that he still doesn't like that set of stairs, but at least he's not planting his feet and refusing to go up or down anymore. I can't lug a 95# beast considering I'm only a little heavier than he is!

We can also walk by strangers without anchoring and barking! He still will growl or bark if he sees someone in the distance for some reason, but if we have to pass them on the sidewalk or if they're walking the same way we are the most he does is lean over for a sniff. No greeting strangers yet until I figure out why he likes some people and not others. He's much more on guard with strangers at night and that's been mostly when he's barked at dogs/people while out on a walk recently.

Since he was confronted by an offleash doodle (I can never tell which mix they are) once a few days ago out on a walk (initially growled/barked, when it got closer he playbowed) and that meeting seemed to go well, I did a careful introduction to my parents' chow mix Mocha. She's the least confrontational dog in the family and we've used her for DA dogs previously so we thought she might be a good match. Again initially he growled and barked, distracted him from reacting with food reward, slowly moved closer until they could sniff between a fence (I waited until he was able to look at her, recognize she was a dog, and jump into a playbow before letting him over to the fence), then sniff in a spot where they could meet, then inside the fence. That portion was the snag, sadly, though I disagree with my mother as to why. My mother unfortunately sees any wrestling or rough/vocal play as aggression- he gave a bark and (what looked like to me) went to ask to wrestle with her. Mocha wrestles with a GSD/GSP who's about his size and so jumped right into it. My mother pulled them apart and said that he was being too aggressive with her and the meeting ended there, I still think he was just being loud. Whatever the case, it'll be a little while before we try again.

My update email to his foster mom from last night :] No new pictures, perhaps some more today when we go out to bounce in the snow.

We had a nice 5 mile walk today. Near the 2.5 mile point he slipped on some ice and fell in a puddle, so we walked straight home (we were originally going to go 6) so he'd be able to get dried off and warmed back up. We tested his backpack today with two water bottles in it and once he got the hang of it he was perfect :] It helps when he's thirsty on walks because then I can just pull water out of his pack instead of fish around in my own.

Oh wow 5 miles! That is a good walk. I love the look and idea of the backpack for him. Do use a collapsible bowl when you walk?

Skoll was a good boy on our potty walk today.

I have some ah. Noise sensitivities. Loud banging noises give me panic attacks. Thunder is bad. Gunshots are usually bad and yes I do flinch when I encounter them in the shows/movies I watch just like I have to take a deep breath for recorded thunder noises. Fireworks are okay if they’re at a distance and if I’m expecting them. If I’m close or not expecting them that day they’re bad.

Some drunk idiot decides to set off fireworks in the park that I’m WALKING IN, right freaking across the park, while I have Skoll leashed beside me. Skoll. The abused reactive 95# doberman who tells things he’s afraid of that he will definitely chew them up.

Kay. So. I was expecting fireworks last night and did not have much of a problem. I was not expecting fireworks right next to me at 6pm in a public zone fired off by some drunk idiot today (also that's illegal). Panic attack starts. Skoll is suddenly a fantastic wonderful dog and while he seemed startled by the initial blast he came over to me and put himself between me and the source of the noise. Ears and nub up, frozen in position. I don’t think he realized WHY I was scared but I think he understood that the sound was the problem. No barking, no panicking, just a silent “go away I’m watching you”.

Eventually reason started to come back to my brain and I was able to get myself calm enough to start walking again yes I did yelp and freeze when this happened and of course by this time because it’s 6pm all of the neighborhood dogs are out in their yards and NOW they’re all amped up from the noise. Again Skoll is a reactive mess occasionally and I was fully expecting to have to deal with him freaking out on top of my freaking out and was not looking forward to the walk back.

Loose leash the entire time. No pulling (shocker considering he pulls like the devil otherwise), no outbursts or aggression towards the amped up neighborhood dogs. He did the silent focused body block “this is my human go away” a few times when we had to pass a particularly bothered dog or someone who doesn’t reflexively jump out of a doberman’s way (most people here are scared of him) but he was actually BETTER than he’s ever been.

Then we got inside and he was a pest until I sat on the couch with a cup of cold water. Put his head on my lap and just waited it out. I guess when he was satisfied that I wasn’t losing control anymore was when he decided to distract me with play time. Then he got supper, another walk before bed, some more out time, and he was tucked in for the night in his crate a couple hours ago.

Here we have Skoll vs Bookstores. A friend of mine owns a 2nd hand bookstore that I get the majority of my books from. She ordered one for me over the holidays and since I was in the area I picked it up on our walk.

Image
Then we have Skoll vs Banks. No worries, the ATM screen is just displaying their generic welcome sequence.

There was also Skoll vs Courthouse (went to pick up registration papers), Skoll vs Police Station (courthouse said "police station has them"), and Skoll vs Ice Cream (yummy snack) but those places were filled with people and I wanted to keep the experiences positive for both him and everyone inside, so I didn't have time to get him in a downstay for pictures. We also had Skoll vs Central Market however we were visiting a butcher's stand and I had to keep both hands free to keep him from "shopping".

I live in a very dog-friendly area currently where if you're a regular face (I am, most of these places are right next to my college) and you ask politely before bringing your dog in, they welcome you with open arms. If you seem in control of your dog and the first impression was positive, you're pretty much set for life.

Image
After all this excitement we had Skoll vs Bathtime which he didn't enjoy nearly as much as the other places. However he's itchy and making ME itchy again so it's oatmeal shampoo and water all the way.

Though just a suggestion... I believe depending on your states health codes that it's illegal to bring your dog into any place that serves food so I would recommend against that.

I'm aware of this. However it only affects what goes on inside a building, not at a stand, and I am not the person who would be fussed at if a health code officer catches me inside. It also depends what each store calls "food". I can go into a pet store that sells candy. I can go into Blockbuster too, but they sell candy. I'm not likely to be allowed in a grocery store or a Walmart. Some cafes and snack shops will allow dogs or have a certain section for dog walkers to come through to buy their goods. I leave it up to the discretion of the shop owner but I also use common sense and don't try to bring him anywhere that I know for sure pets won't be allowed.

There are also some shops that don't sell food but still don't allow dogs. I work at a RadioShack and I kick all pet dogs out. There have been two service dogs who we obviously don't care if they come in, but people coming in with either a huge dog on a leash or a tiny one under their arm are told that the dog must stay outside. I had a lady fight this and I called the cops on her (she also brought a bike in which is not allowed). Why do we care so much? Because no stores except for pet stores have insurance for what happens if something goes wrong with the animals. Pet store employees are super insured for zoonotic diseases, scratches, and bites. Pet store customers that are affected by any one of those are paid by that store's insurance, not the store itself, if they decide to sue. We don't have that at RadioShack, so pets are not allowed because RadioShack corporate doesn't want to deal with it.

I like doing training and desensitizing in public places because it allows me to do multiple things. First off, it's fantastic training with distractions. Second, unfamiliar public places are more mentally stimulating because of so much going on (con is that a dog not desensitized or used to public outings will be overstimulated). Third, let's say I want to go to a marathon next year. That's a lot of people and possibly other dogs. Taking him in his current state is asking for trouble. Taking him after he's gotten used to walking/running through/around large crowds of people would be significantly more successful. Thus it opens up opportunities for us to both get out of the house and wander. Bonus, any on leash time and training strengthens the bond an owner has with its dog.
