have y'all ever encountered a form that fitted perfectly, both analysis-wise and vibe-wise, but still wasn't the one?

Coyote fit me almost perfectly, but the keyword was almost and I don't think I give off even close to the same vibe as Kris/Winger/Other-Coyote-person-I-can't-remember.

Azawakhs, Anatolian Shepherds and Shiba Inus. Finnish Spitz is close, but there are quite a few points that are off.

Hm, I'm thinking vibe will be a big part of this. Anatolians I think would have a larger, more "solid" presence, an Azawahk would be slightly more elegant (in thought, most likely), and the Shiba Inu would have a smaller presence and be less attached to the typical hierarchy (more of a mind of their own). If that helps any. ^^
