I would be in for the warrior's one! C: It's been a while since I've been in one.

Oh, by the way, I have a question. Back, waaaay back, were there any literate roleplayers on CS or was it all illiterate roleplays and such? I'm just really curious

yes, there were a few semi-literate roleplays. The definition of semi-literate when the rp boards were set up was about one/two paragraphs of six or seven lines each, and the posts usually had lyrics and pictures.

and surely a balanced character is a perfect character? many real people have bad traits that outweigh the good ones and many people have good traits that outweigh the bad ones. i think a mary-sue is both someone who is perfect { pretty, clever, funny, shy etc. or jsut the conventional mary-sue } but also someone who is perfectly well balanced. you just don't come across many people who have flaws and good traits that weigh equally.

I agree- but some people don't bother giving a flaw at all. if you skim through their form, almost all of the time they are stating how great their character is :3 like a sales person.

and by "perfect" if you are referring to what I posted, I meant it sort of dramatically.

an asian to the knee wrote:Well, beyond what you guys are discussing as a mary-sue, when they're all powerful and smart and nice, are characters that are flawed and also referred to as mary-sues because they are so painfully trying to get attention by throwing in insanity, big polarity, split personality, etc., even though none of them know how to play those accurately. Furthermore, they might make a really mean character for the "lone wolf" deal and such. Flawed characters do not necessarily mean they're good characters it just means they're not perfect characters.

I understand that and I agree also (-.- you guys understand me...) anyways, going overboard on flaws is real annoying, and I see what you mean- however, not adding any flaws- does that make the character a good one too? (See example below)
After that, what I mean is that just adding a few flaws that suit your character is better than no flaws at all.

Macy is a shy girl, with a unique personality. Unlike others, she does not care if being teased, for she's gotten used to it. She rarely smiles fully, but is always in a good mood. Smiling isn't her signature move, unlike most girls. Being nerdy is just the beginning. Macy loves to read, write, dance and take photos. These qualities she'll excel at. She is mainly the quiet one. Macy has excellent photography skills, allowing to capture any memory. Her patience and quietness allowed her to master the skill of picture-taking.

Rarely getting mad, her temper is like water. Still for often, but if wind comes along, it erupts. Her temper isn't really bad, but she will scream and yell if provoked. Normally, she is calm and quiet, like pond-water.

Not really being flirty, Macy has no boyfriend or ex. All these years, she remained a loner. She really doesn't care if she gets one or not, though many have asked her out. She normally will be in the shadows, but sometimes will take the spotlight.

If you get to know her well, she is humorous and cute. She likes to do things your average Jane might not, which makes her stand out. Instead of shopping, Macy would rather play Hockey or dance Ballet. Instead of worrying about makeup, Macy would worry about making the state or provincial swim team.

Yess, this was one of my characters. looking back, she is quite indeed, perfect

Favorite type of RP: Romance, but with a plot. Anything from teenagers to adults. I am quite partial to werewolf RPs, but I'm welcome to most ideas.
    Roleplay sample:

    toujours. wrote:Alexis Valentina Volkov.
Curiosity got the better of Alexis, but unlike with the cat; it didn't get her killed. Yet.
Instead of continuing on her original course away from the football field, she hovered by the edge for a few moments before approaching the bleachers. She was careful not to hold eye contact with anyone who happened to glance her way; she didn't want to get noticed, or worse - remembered.
As the neared what she assumed was the Mirel family, she slowed to a stop nearby and took out her cell. There were no new texts and she knew that, but she didn't want to look like she was spying on them. Sure, it wasn't the most original trick in the book; but it usually worked.

The young woman zipped up her leather jacket and pulled the grey hood up and over her head, protecting her from the drizzle as it slowly grew worse. It had been a while since she had grown her hair out this long, and even longer since it had been her natural colour. One of the first things she had done after the 'incident' was change her appearance; her fashion sense and general appearance.
But now she was back to something that resembled what she had once been, or once had the chance to be.

As snippets of the conversation reached her, Alexis raised her head and glanced in the Mirels' direction. The two boys, who she realised now definitely were brothers, were arguing. It seemed the eldest was riling up his younger sibling, Oren. She didn't, however, managed to catch Oren's brother's name. Although she was pretty certain that the elder of the two was in fact her target. Oren just didn't fit the profile, whereas it described his brother almost perfectly, from what she had seen so far.
He seemed to be a the 'bad boy' type, and therefore attracted quite a lot of attention from the opposite sex. Alexis herself found him attractive, but it had been a long time since she had acted on such feelings. She had lost interest in romance the night her innocence was taken from her and she was exposed to the dark side of the world. Aside from that, the thug looked like he knew what kind of effect he had on people, whether it was good or bad, and he used it to his advantage.

The brothers' argument was soon silenced, and their mother eventually suggested for them all to leave and return home. That was moments after Alexis had decided to leave, although she had still managed to catch a snippet as she walked past. If she did happen to catch either boys' attention it would most likely do nothing but help her to finish her job...
Alex paused for a moment after that thought had passed through her mind. Then she had an idea. If one boy did notice her and take an interest, whether it was Oren or his brother; she could work that to her advantage. She wasn't usually one to do undercover work, but in this case it would help her make some sense of the vague instructions she'd been given.

A small smile worked it's way on to the girl's face as she once again continued on to the school parking lot. She stopped by her bike and her smile was soon hidden by the visor of her helmet as she covered her head, then swinging a leg over to straddle the seat of her bike. So now that she had a plan of action, all she had to do was some research and a bit of planning...
"Perfect." She murmured as she started the engine and kicked up the side stand. After, it was only a matter of weaving through traffic back to her current apartment.

I hate perfect, flawless characters. Honestly, nowadays I have no patience with them at all. In fact, whenever I do start a roleplay with someone who creates a characters like this, I usually end up quitting it. This is really probably the leading reason why I usually stop posting on roleplays. I always try to make my character have some sort of flaw, and it sort of ruins it for me when they have to interact with some cooky-cutter Mary-Sue. It puts all the hard work for creating a character down the drain.

After many restless nights of pondering this subject however (haha, not really xD), I believe that the people more prone to this disease of "perfect characters" are writers just starting out. Or people who just stay on the same level no matter how many years go by. It is easy to create a Mary-Sue in the first roleplay you've ever made - hell, I did so myself, many years ago. And when I look back on my earlier roleplays, I see that some of my characters are a little suspiciously too perfect... I shall not include links to these specific examples, because I'm too ashamed xD Anyway, once we grow more as writers, and see what's out there, then we actually start to create those characters that are awesome, and screwed up.

But just my opinion, again xD.

Favorite type of RP: I will join anything with a unique plot. Anything around romance, adventure, friendship and action is my thing. From sweet disney roleplays to zombies. So if you have an open slot, I will love to join. I also enjoy roleplays with a 'stranded on an island' theme.

Sample of writing:

→ BECKER

| mood ;; open |location ;; the cliffside | crush ;; ashe | status ;; the moron | tags ;; ashe |

Becker sat in camp, wondering where everyone was off to, because the only one who was accompanying him was hatter, but he was dug up in his things, so every time Becker talked to him, he would say 'shush' and go back to whatever he was up to. After finally sitting there for long enough, he decided to find Ashe, his wonderful friend. She was one of the only people who would actually stand by him, when lotus would get mad, and start telling him that he was stupid. But he accepted it, it was a daily thing that lotus would scold him and such. Becker stood up and lifted up his finger and opened his mouth, he was going to ask hatter for help, but swallowed the thought, Hatter was entertained by his work. So Becker slowly made his way up the jungle path, heading towards the cliffs. He had only one thing on his mind, Ashe. She hasn't come back to their so called home in hours. He could have guessed she sat up on the top of the cliff, her legs hanging down, daydreaming. He found that very divine, because the other, in the exception of Sawyer, usually where doing things for the camp. Such as gathering wood and food, hatter doing his smart stuff, booth exploring and flint leading all this chaos. Becker had always admired him for it. He finds it quite amusing seeing this bunch at work, without flint they'd be a hot mess. Finally as he got out of the jungle and saw the view that was in front of him, he sighed. He could see Ashe at the far end of the Cliffside, sitting on the rocks. She was beautiful, with her hair blowing in the wind and all. She seemed to be fixed on something, in the horizon. As Becker looked down also, he saw sun shining above the ocean. In the distance you could spot some of the other islands, somewhere far away, but some were close enough that if you had a boat or a canoe, you could get there. As he approached his best friend, she was currently lying down with her eyes closed, so he quietly sat down next to her. Not to interrupt or anything, he just gave her a 'hi' and then went silent. You could hear the birds chirping and Indian drums comig from the other end of the island. Neverland was truly a stunning place. "What are you thinking about?" he asked her, his gaze not parting from the water.

[ This is from a roleplay about Neverland by Drift. ]

Any semi-lit/lit RPs you have: Nope, I used to have some, but most of them sadly died. I only am in group roleplays and a bunch of onexones.

One last plug for this:

Okay, so I made the club-only illiterate RP! Here's the link: Simulacrum.

It's a sci-fi, powers, teens, romance, mystery, adventure, romance extravaganza of craziness. All the details are in the link. :3 For those of you who like powers RPs, you can play a character with powers. For those of you who dislike that, you can play a character without them.

This is a veeery low-key, just for fun RP. It is designed to be semi-lit or less, with short stuff encouraged! This is just for fun, not to sharpen your writing skills. ^-^

We'll be starting pretty soon.
INSANELY BUSY!
I am moving! For the next month or so, I am going to be so very busy.
If I'm on here, it's because I'm unwinding with writing or pets or whatever.
Please do not add to my stress, if you can. Your support is appreciated.

    /awkwardly jumps in

i guess i don't mind perfect characters, but they're rather boring and about as unique as a clump of dirt. they're literally everywhere on here, and i'll admit i have used a few in previous roleplays. but writing about them can get old really fast. i like to be able to create and manipulate different characters, including their flaws.

another thing that bugs me is tormented histories. tragedy happens all the times, but if a character has had his/her parents murdered, been abused, etc. at the same time, shouldn't they be kind of messed up?

OMG, this...

Both my parents were murdered and I grew up in some dirty old orphanage where they abused me and starved us, but OMG i still love the world and am the perfect person.

HAHAHA NO. It doesn't work that way.
