I love it, as long as it's not overdone. A fair fight, you know? If there's no challenge, of course, there's no story.

If I'm on here, it's because I'm unwinding with writing or pets or whatever.
Please do not add to my stress, if you can. Your support is appreciated.

I love it too, but in small amounts, you need to have the challenge I agree.
I'm talking about overdone, I should've mentioned that before.:)

I was looking through the forums and well, it hit me quite hard that mostly everyone above the semi-literate level has like atleast one perfect character. Uhhh- like excuse me??? Tess and Nick said quite well that perfect people aren't allowed. o.o but they still make them. Every time I make a roleplay, atleast one joins.

The reason behind it is because most of us roleplay somebody we want to be. Most "lit" people base their characters off of themselves (but a better version). That is why they can write so much. So much of good stuff. When it comes to bad things- ehh, not so much (well, 'cuz who citizens their own personality?) trust me, when I first started roleplaying, that's what I did.

Pssh- yeah, well I really can't take it anymore. The next time I open a roleplay, it is going to be about flawed characters. Characters that are so flawed they are made to perfection. This roleplay will be so awesome that people will want to edit their Mary-sue/Gary-sue to join it.

but for now, this is a wip

well, that was posted like a few days ago. my hopes and dreams are finally becoming reality. I am not opening spots up for everyone, since I literally hate people always reserving all of the females. the "sweetheart" role will be for the lazy person that wants to play a basically flawless person. m'kay, spots are below, and open for reservation until 9:00am central.

the saneone - male
quite cray-cray- female
the alphapersonality - male
simply too shy-female
the sweetheart- female
the goof- male
the illiterallyblindone - male

I want to do this so badly, with the cray- cray female, but I don't have consistent internet right now! *cry*

I find perfect characters to be painfully boring. It is far more fun when they have a big, glaring flaw and/or weakness to take advantage of. Everyone needs their kryptonite, so to speak. My fae in a M// 1x1 I am in is fatally allergic to steel/iron, and if it gets in his bloodstream, he could die. His boyfriend is a vampire, and that's pretty much the only reason he's still alive. The vampire drew the iron out by drinking it out of his blood.

I have a mage who is so bad with any sort of physical weapon that she is likely to stab herself if she picks up a blade. Needless to say, she sticks with magic. Of course, if anything should come up that blocks her magic, or if she runs out of energy, she's a sitting duck.

I have a really quite powerful assassin who has super speed, super strength, and super agility. She also has a super annoying demi-goddess named Aslin inhabiting her body, and when Aslin tries for a complete takeover, my assassin has to devote all of her attention to keeping that from happening. Of course, Aslin likes to try for the takeovers when the assassin is otherwise occupied (i.e. in the middle of a battle). There is a reason that someone with such super powers has so many scars. ;)

My dragonrider is as average as they come. She is so forgettable that people are always going "Who?" when her name comes up. She blends into any crowd. She is also nice to a fault, in that she lets people use her, even when she knows they are using her. On the other hand, she has a very charming personality, and she is incredibly intelligent and resourceful.

It's just much more fun, and the story is more interesting, if characters have big flaws. Of course, you can take it too far in the other direction, too. They need good points to balance out the flaws, and they need flaws to balance out the good points.

The Semi-Literate+ Roleplayer's Club

Postby - serendipity » Wed Jan 02, 2013 11:12 pm

i think there was mention of one set in yellowstone on the the thread?

look, i finally got my reply up for mission tanha! i'm extremely sorry for taking so long { contributors: no internet for a while, tons of replies and a little bit of procrastination and then losing it and having to retype } but it's up now and i hope it's done okay. replies will get quicker now it was just this one that took longer. sorry again.

and surely a balanced character is a perfect character? many real people have bad traits that outweigh the good ones and many people have good traits that outweigh the bad ones. i think a mary-sue is both someone who is perfect { pretty, clever, funny, shy etc. or jsut the conventional mary-sue } but also someone who is perfectly well balanced. you just don't come across many people who have flaws and good traits that weigh equally.

Well, beyond what you guys are discussing as a mary-sue, when they're all powerful and smart and nice, are characters that are flawed and also referred to as mary-sues because they are so painfully trying to get attention by throwing in insanity, big polarity, split personality, etc., even though none of them know how to play those accurately. Furthermore, they might make a really mean character for the "lone wolf" deal and such. Flawed characters do not necessarily mean they're good characters it just means they're not perfect characters.

I want to do a character who doesn't care. about nothing. nothing at all.

    "you want some fries?" "...sure"
    "are you alright?" "bah..."
"are you hurt? didn't the explosion killed you?" "meh"
"having a great time, huh?" "da"
to the asian above;; agree x100. if you have perfect character, other rpers have two options: hating because it's perfect or befriending it because it's perfect. same happens with flawed characters: you can hate them because they seem weak, or befriend them because they are weak and want to help them.

I don't mean he or she has to be perfectly balanced. I just mean that if you have someone with TOO many flaws and no good traits, then they character comes across as a needy, attention grubber.

That's exactly what I was getting at when I said you still have to balance it out. Making a huge, dramatic flaw can be just as bad as making a character with no flaws. Of course, if you MAKE a flaw, you better be able to use it and actually play it. I see flaws put in all the time, but then the person just never has it come up. Or...they have it technically come up, but they ALWAYS find a way around it. For example, I have a character who can never tell a lie. Now, because of this, she has learned to get pretty creative with the truth. However, that does not mean she can talk her way out of it every single time. She just managed to get herself thrown into jail because she could not fast-talk her way out of trouble.

That's true, raven. I think the problem is a lot of rpers are unwilling to take the fall and have something happen to their character because of sheer inadequacy or an accident or something. They're unwilling to be mature and realize bad stuff is going to happen to their characters that isn't necessarily for attention or something. Christ, not everyone is going to be a leader and not everyone is going to be strong.
