"Huh, it's weird seeing the Willows un-mowed," I said, trying to keep from stepping on anything hidden in the tall grass. I was taller than average, but it was up to my waist, and who knew what could be hiding in there?
"Yeah," my cousin Brian agreed, "But pretty cool. It's awfully peaceful without the motorbikes around."
"AND THERE ARE ACTUALLY ANIMALS HERE!" my little sister, Amelia, shouted from the side of the creek, where her and my other cousin, Colleen, were looking for tadpoles.
I scowled. So much for peaceful. "If there were any animals, they're gone now," I muttered, walking over to the creek. See, we call the little patch of woods our grandparents own "The Willows," but I've never seen any willow trees in there. It's more cottonwoods and oaks than anything. It's supposed to be called that because of the creepy feeling you get when you enter. I've grown up exploring the Willows, so it doesn't bother me, but some of the younger cousins have their apprehensions about coming with us. Usually, all the paths are mowed and we ride little ATVs and old mopeds through the woods, but today we decided to travel on foot. Right then, we were on the main path that runs next to a little creek.
Suddenly, Brian gripped my arm. "Don't look now," he muttered as I froze, "But there's a huge buck right behind us." Carefully, I swiveled my head around to see exactly what he had described staring out at us from the woods. It was spring, and the bucks could be really ferocious if you messed with them. To my dismay, this one had a huge rack of antlers. I counted nine points. Those antlers were perfect for goring anything that bothered the deer.
"Oh. My. God," I replied.

302 word count. Not my best, and I'm glad I didn't have to finish it, because I had NO idea where this was going. XD

"Deer, founders of the cervidae family. Herbivores. Prey animals. Generally shy, though dangerous. Not to be mistaken with antelopes, as they are not really related much." Urim went quiet to allow his fellow regulars to take notes, this was important knowlegde if they ever were to be left in the wild. Maybe not the scinetific information, but you get the idea.
The soliders stared expectantly at him, and he just stared back. "That's all? We don't even know how to kill one, much less skin one!" A short chitter growled. "No worries, you'll know" Urim reassured him "then why are we taught this, we'll never even use the scientific name if we meet a so-called 'deer' I don't even think they live here!"
"they live in the backcountry, where you would probAbly meet them"
"Pft, like we'll ever go there, it's only a swamp"
"And a hideout!" Urim was starting to get annoyed with the chitter, he flickered his ears impatiently, waiting for the gathered to calm down. "Listen, wether you like it or not, you're going out there. And when you do the enemy will be the least of your worries, deer will be high on your list" he paced back and forth, making sure the lesson was gotten. "Deer can be very vicious at this time, I suggest you do not mess with them. It could easily end in tradegy"
