((Le gasp, you guys are impressive! I love the long... erm... installments, so don't you dare quit :D))

Bay had been stewing in his thoughts, his mind trying to process what had happened. He had been, anyway, until Jynx plowed into him. She was screaming, crying, yelling at him; yelling words he didn't fully understand at first. He blinked stupidly as she broke down and then regained control of her anger, stepping gingerly off his body. He stood up quickly and shook the dust and grime from his fur, suddenly hyper aware of the string his reputation hung on every time he lost a fight. He turned to growl at the girl, but she had run off to lay with the store owner's rotting body. Why? He had no idea, but he didn't yell after her. He pitied her in a way.
She was right, though. What was he doing, sitting there, drawing a blank? Bay stood and shook himself again, puffing out to his full size. Looking out across the devastated streets, he couldn't see anything that looked hopeful, but he was the kind of guy who liked to take charge. He had to try, at least.
He set of digging through the rubble. He quickly abandoned the kennels after overturning the front half of one of the store dachshunds, but refused to give up. He scratched at the piles of concrete and rebar slowly, but with purpose, trying to find anything that reminded him of the world he used to know.
Then Alatea howled. That sound tore right through him. It was beautiful but sad, and if he didn't know better, he'd call it the most hallowing sound he'd ever heard. But this Alatea girl... she had herself together. She called out to the group, trying to rally them into action, and ran off into the dust. He liked the way she worked.
Still, no one seemed to want to go with her; they were still in a state of shock. Bay made a decision to follow her, pulling his face into a frown of concentration as he bounded over to the spot where she had disappeared. "She's right, you know." he said to the group, trying to imitate Alatea's seeming leadership. "We're not gonna get anywhere by sitting around on our asses, so we might as well follow her." He tried to get some sort of response from the group, but no one seemed to listen. He ended up making eye contact with only one other dog in the vicinity, King. Bay liked him a lot; they were similar. They understood each other. "She's right, you know," he said again, this time more quietly, and followed the female into the unknown.

XXXXX

Azalea was lost. Not in mind or in spirit, but actually physically lost. She had always wanted to run through the city by herself, but not like this. She had never imagined it would be this complex, and as she ran though the labyrinth of fallen buildings and overturned cars, all she wanted was the kennel owner. She wanted him to be next to her again, to call her name, to feed her. Her memories were a cold reminder of who's blood it was that stained her paws.
But after seeing his body, she wanted nothing more than to be as far away as possible, so she ran on as far as she could. She didn't make it very far, though; her soft paws were quickly cut by the glass that littered the streets and her body wasn't used to this kind of running. She collapsed and slid under a car not a block away from the pet store, cold, alone, and in pain for the first time in her life.

((Blegh, I wrote a lot on Bay there but I kind of neglected Azalea . I'll have to catch up with her later XD))

[Haha. Poor Azalea.]

King looked back at Bay. He kept going over his choices. He decided to get Jynx to come. He slowly walked up to her, carful of the glass everywhere. "Jynx, come with us. It's not safe here. Trust me." he seemed axious to Jynx, but he soon found her following her, her tears gone. He climbed up the rubble, not rushing himself. He snifed around and began to follow his scent. "Bay, wait up!" he called out into the darkness. His long legs steady as they lifted him up above the rubble. Jynx is right aswell. Not just that other female. he thought. Not ever really knowing that female put him at a disadvantage with trusting her. His eyes were determined, even in the hot steam from the sun within the shadows. He got a scence Jynx was really depressed right now. His ears were practically useless when it comes to him showing intrist, as they were cropped when he was a pup. Now that he thought about it, his tail was useless as well.

King yawned alittle as he leaped down off the rest of the rubble ahead, landing perfectly scilent. He stepped into the darkness and began to walk straight ahead, looking back to check on Jynx, who was still on the rocks. He didn't want to rush her, but then agian they needed to hurry. He wonderedwhat it would be like to be her, but shook it off his mind and continued, searching for Bay and the female.

○○○

Jynx looked at King as he spoke to her. She had always trusted him, so she nodded submisivly. She stood and began to follow him. It hurt her to think she was stepping on dead bodies while she climbed the pile. Her tail hung and dragged agianst the rubble. She held her head low. Her eyes never looked back, but she couldn't stand it. She looked back, making it harder to leave her home. She had lived there for years. She wished she could walk next to the store owner agian, the tall grass brushing softly agianst her pelt.

[I did the same. :| Oh well.]
[I tried it once, didn't like it, and won't do it agian.]

It was obviously daytime, but it was hard to tell where the sun was. Bay trotted on across the wreckage, following the scent and occasional sound that marked Alatea's trail. He was overheating under his thick coat and panting heavily, and he was beginning to become aware of how thirsty he really was.
His thoughts left his parched throat when he heard King's echoing call for him to wait. He smiled to himself. I knew he'd come. He slowed and gradually stopped at a fallen tree, resting while searching the foggy abyss for his friend. His feet fell heavily on the ground and were glad to stop, as were his lungs, but the shepherd tried to keep an air of strength about him as he heard paw steps coming around the bend.
To his surprise, King rounded the corner with Jynx following close behind. Bay stood with his front paws planted on the tree trunk, watching the two approach. When they stopped to catch their breath, Bay nodded to King, exchanging a wordless greeting. He looked over his shoulder at Jynx, who seemed to be lagging deliberately. Maybe you're not useless after all. He nodded to her as well and turned his head back around, jumping over the log to follow their leader.

((Ah... now I'm tired! I'm not even gonna go into Azalea now. I'm so mean to my characters! She can sleep under her car tonight, right? Ha ha. But in all seriousness, I've gotta get off to bed. See you all tomorrow!))

The mahogany femme found it strange that the male was following her like that, like she was some sort of leader. Alatea had no leading experience whatsoever, though she knew she would rather be dominant rather than subservient; despising being told what to do.

Blinking, she whirled around at the scent of two dog’s that she didn’t know very well, her sparse fur catching up to her a second after. She noted that they were in good relations with Bay, so she held no reservations. Sloping her head forward in small greeting she was about to speak when an aroma caught her attention.

Forgetting completely about what she was going to say, she boosted herself onto her hind leg’s, her height impressive as she tilted her muzzle skyward to try and catch another trace of what she believed to be a prey animal, although it was hard to differentiate between that smell and the primary ones of death, smoke, and sulfur.

Forming a better idea of where it could be coming from, she was off, not bothering to wait for the rest of the coalition. Her strong and reliable leg’s propelled her soundlessly forth. the regal femme weaving and dodging soundlessly through the underbrush. Her nose was glued to the ground, ignoring the unappetizing stenches and focusing on the quarry and tracing the smell to it’s origin.

As she neared, Alatea dropped into a seasoned crouch, keeping her shoulders, hinds, and head almost parallel to the ground with practiced ease. Surprise lit up her features when she noticed where she had found herself. A copse of trees, or what was left of the trees, stretched in her path, their trunks covered in soot and most, if not all of them cracked so that they bowed in surrender to the unforgiving soil.

Any leaves that formerly blanketed the trees were disintegrated to nothing but ash that circled the tree’s in a heap. Gingerly taking her first steps into the skeletal patch of flora, Latea spotted what she was looking for. She lingered in the vegetations momentarily, lying not in wait, but in observation.

The mangled carcass of a deer lay sprawled out on the forest floor, it’s head contorted in an unusual fashion, and a slightly deterring smell radiating off of it in waves. But hey, Alatea wasn’t picky or at least not now she wasn’t, and she quickly moved in, brushing as much soot off the deer as possible and clearing away what was left of the hide on the ungulate.

There wasn’t much meat on the creature’s bones, but it would serve the four well enough at least it would put something in their protesting bellies. Tearing in voraciously, she at first, took big gulps of the meat that was almost completely devoid of taste. Forcing herself to slow down and take her usual. Dainty bites, she knew that if she ate too quick it could be dangerous for her fragile body.

Gorging herself, the noble female stepped back and forced herself not to complain about the bland flavor. Only if there was any live prey, she thought wistfully, if there wasn’t, they would soon starve to death if they used up all of their sources of sustenance.

The scalding heat seared down on her russet back, the source of it unclear as it remained thronged in clouds. For once, Alate cursed her abundant fur and was soon starting to feel the affects of dehydration. She needed to sit down, a headache pounded against her temples and dizziness clouded her thoughts and made it hard for her maroon eyes to focus in on things.

Collapsing roughly to the ground she buried her aching head under the sanction of her paws, the darkness calming her slightly. If it wasn’t starvation that she died from, the runner up could be thirst. A groan of discomfort betrayed her condition and she quickly snapped her jaws shut, not wanting to show any sort of weakness.

Although quite lightheaded, she forced herself to her paws and continued deliriously on, searching desperately for a water source, though she kept her composure and tried to force her face not to contort into a grimace of pain, attempting to conceal how badly she really needed water.
Sorry to everyone who I have threads with, I was quite busy for a while but i'm now working on getting back on track! I'll try and post on the thread's i'm in as soon as I can!

((We must've run far if we got all the way to the forest, damn XD))

Hunger, thirst, and weariness were beginning to take their toll on Bay. He had a surprising amount of strength left for someone who hadn't eaten in days, but endurance running had never been his forte and his body was voicing it's protests. Still, he pushed on, forcing his large paws to keep their beat beneath him because stopping would mean defeat. Bay was not one to be defeated, especially by his own paws.
He knew he couldn't go on for long, though. Perhaps it was the time he had spent trapped underground, or maybe it was the monotonously grim scenery that stretched out endlessly before him, but something had appeared inside him, and it was begging him to quit. No, forcing him to quit.
The tired dog finally gave in, stumbling off the trail to catch his breath, head hung low. And as he sat there, gasping for breath, it hit him. He finally understood what that horrible, stinging thing in his mind was; it was the unbearable stench of death in the air. The death of thousands and the rotting corpses they'd left behind combined in the acidic air, making it impossible to breathe. Bay was suffocating; the smell was screaming inside his head, jabbing knives into old wounds that he had forgotten. He suppressed his memories as best he could and lurched forward, desperate to find anything other than the bleak destruction that surrounded him.
His nose was dripping, but it caught the scent he had been following. He ran on down the path; he couldn't think of much else to do while his mind was so clouded.
But then, the thin trail disappeared. It was lost to the other smell, that awful smell of death. Bay's knees buckled and he sat down among the pieces of twisted metal and broken brick that lined the streets. He was a proud dog, but while he sat there in the dirt, he looked rejected and lost, turned in on himself so that he appeared half his normal size.
He looked up and around as a last desperate try to find something, anything that looked familiar. Through his bleary eyes, he all he saw was dirt and rubble, and the carcass of some animal sprawled beneath some splintered trees. But the carcass caught his attention. It looked different... like something had recently torn at it with its teeth. And yes, now that he concentrated on it, Alatea's scent wasn't lost, it was masked by the other smell, and her scent seemed to be all over the wretched dead thing.
And then, it all made sense. Food hadn't always come from a bag! When he was a pup, food was in the birds and mice he had tried so desperately to catch, in the roadkill his owner would toss in the back yard for him. And once, so, so long ago, food had come from his mother. Yes, food comes from other animals, not bags, he suddenly remembered.
But then it occured to him that he would actually have to eat that dead thing. It made him sick to think about it, but he figured that if he was going to be sick, he might as well have something in his stomach to throw up. Alatea had obviously had no reservations about sinking her teeth in, so why should he be any weaker than her?
His dark face twisted up in determination, and he stepped forward, ripping a dry chunk of meat off the bone in a last resort to fill his empty stomach.

((That was... a lot longer than I expected it to be, ha ha. And if anyone cares, Azalea's asleep. That's why I'm not writing about her XD))

((That oil spill makes me so mad. It might just be the environmental crazy person inside me talking, but I just can't believe BP behaved the way they did, and the spill itself is going to cause so much destruction. I heard they don't expect to stop it until August. That means the oil will reach all alone the eastern seaboard and into the ocean... ugh. I'm just so angry about it.))

Re: Our World (Semi Lit/Literate Dog RP) [Needs Players!]

[Yup. Feel free to post in the topic.]

King kept a slow pace at the walk. He knew Jynx couldn't take much more pressure. He kept looking back, over his shoulder, depression taking over. He had finally realised it wasn't the smell of death choking his lungs that made him depressed, but the sad, far-off look in the young border's face that gave it to him. Depression was like being choked, but on the inside, in your heart. This was a new feeling to him. Depression and simpathy never seemed like the perfect feeling, but it did now. Jynx was more than a friend. Jynx had allowed him into her life, she had allowed him to sing with her desprate soul.
Turning his attention back to Bay's scent, he began a long thinking period. Depression took over lives, not just the body of it's host. It would kill the host from the inside-out. He had to get it out of his sistem. His long legs continued, not daring to stop and rest. If they rested any more he would be alone, since Jynx didn't have any help for him with her lost mind. Food would not come easy, and neither would shelter. Water was not going to just show up in front of him either. His stomach ached for something to digest, but he kept on topic. Finding Bay and the female he was following would not be any easy task, especially with Jynx behind.
King's eyes searched desprately for a sign that life would be easier. The smell of death was what bringing the sun so down. The sun's said ray's had no effect on King anymore. He had practically become emune at this point in time. He knew time was only waht could heal the sun and chase away the smell of death. It was not right to kill, though.
Finally he came across the deer corpse as Bay ate it. Turning, he entered the small clearing. "Didn't you know, that if you are to eat a deer, you might aswell eat the corpse of the one we lost, the hand that fed us." he said, softness in his tone. King had never really been one to fight, but this upset him abit. He should have stayed back, where he would never have to eat anything dead with disrespect. It was practically like peeing on a dead man's grave.
He quickly shook his pelt of dirt. His paws ached, but he didn't rest. "What is this female's name anyway? I've never met her before." King added. He had never thought his words sounded at all wise, but he had to admit; what he said before about eating the deer was full of wisdom, abit atleast. This whole thing would have never happened if he was kept upstairs. He wished his life had ended with his beloved feeder. The had that fed him was full of wisdom and truth, that he found he had caught on.
King stepped closer to Bay and laid down infront of him. This truly should not have been the life for him if he had a choice. He hadn't a clue where he stood, and he didn't know how long it would be until civilization would return to this small dump he called home. His sins should have stopped when they stopped for those above ground. Once agian, though, his ears and tail showed no emotion. This should have never happened. It's ruined the lives of those around us, and Jynx is a living example.

[I had to leave Jynx out. She's just basically following. There's no fun in that now is there.]
