[sorry it's so long ;-; ]
“I want to go outside though!” Roselia whined, gazing up at Spirit her eyes wide, almost pulling the adorable face that meant ‘I want to do anything I please and if you stop me there will be a large stash of trouble in store for you.’ Spirit returned it with a glare that caused the pale blue Meow to shrink beneath her gaze. Although the two were the same in Meow-years, some people would question who was older.
“It’s freezing cold and in the middle of Mwinter.” Spirit replied with a casual dismiss. “Plus, we have work to do.” She said, motioning to the mess behind her. She spread her wings and daintily leapt to the tabletop. Roselia growled lowly, but softly walked up to the pile of junk that the other Meow had collected.
“What is this?” She asked, her nose wrinkling in disgust. She prodded it tentatively with one paw, her brow furrowing in the middle. “It looked like some monster just went to the toilet.” Spirit shook her head in disbelief, shocked at the statement.
“These are the Christmas decorations for this year.” The angel Meow explained, leaping amidst boxes and other items, like tinsel and candy-canes. “It is our job this year to decorate the house!” Roselia paused, waiting for Spirit to simply say it was another of her jokes and laugh. She didn’t. The Meow’s eyes widened and her jaw quite literally hit the ground.
“You mean we have to beautify the house so Santa can bribe us all to be good Meows by giving us presents?” She said, though her jaw was slack, so it sounded more like “Youeaaehaoeauiyehoueoanacanrieualloegoodeowsygiinguresents?” She shook her head, closing her mouth. “What happened to our Pets?” She asked Spirit, referring to the humans that so determinedly looked after the trouble-makers.
“They are away for their own Christmas, and like a lot of Meows, we have been forgotten for the day.” Seeing her devastated expression, she continued; “Not forever, you dim-witted numbskull, just for today. Like Inspirit left me to go with her family.” A smile spread across her features as Roselia nodded, still hesitant. “Oh, come on, it can’t be that bad!” She said laughing.
“So,” Roselia began, drifting away from the topic, “What exactly do we have to do with this?” She gazed at the baubles that were hidden behind a bid of red tinsel. She prodded the tinsel, but jumped back when she was poked in the paw. The Meow waved her tail defensively and hissed at it.
“You idiot.” Spirit muttered beneath her breath, fluttering down to Roselia. “Look, Rose, it’s just tinsel. An inanimate object. It can’t hurt you.” Despite this reassurance, Roselia still sent chilling glares its way. “And to answer your first question, we must first put up the tree.” And with that said, the winged Meow pushed a giant box of the table and the floor below.
“Ooomf.” This small mutter of pain was all Roselia got to say, before the box fell atop her head, with nothing but the tip of her tail showing. Spirit jumped to the tiled floor of the Meow Manor Dining Room, her eyes scanning the ground that once held her friend.
“Rose, where are you?” The Meow yelled, her tail twitching in annoyance. Beneath her breath, she added, “That cat it completely nuts.” If one saw the face of Roselia, you would have seen her right eye twitching in anger. “Oh Roselia!” Crooned Spirit, wandering out of the room to find her friend, of whom was actually right next to her. Beneath the box, Rose attempted at freeing herself, however only got herself stuck to the tape. She sighed, already beginning to feel flatter than a pancake.
Meanwhile, during all of this flattening and stalking, Jade walked in, or more to the fact rolled in. The Meow was curled up into the smallest ball possible, using her tail to propel her forwards. Since her eyes were closed, she was terrified of having them squished by the ground, she couldn’t see where she was going, and bumped right into the box that was on Rose. Jade opened her eyes, and stood, poking the outside.
“What is this?” She pondered aloud, before excitement coursed through her body. “Maybe Santa came early?” She climbed to the top of said box, however it was taped. “That sucks.” She said, disappointment clearly etched into her features. The teal cat jumped to the ground, landing on the paw that had been revealed of Roselia’s.
“Eeeeyow!” Rose yelped, suddenly with newfound energy pushing the box off her and clutching at her trodden paw. Not that the rest of her was any better, considering she had been under the box for many a few minutes. Jade jumped backwards as the other Meow hurtled ten feet in the air, and like all cats, landing with a thud on her feet. Her fur was bristled as she looked at Jade, eyes narrowed in distaste. “What was that for?”
Jade looked behind her, then back to Rose, then back once more, trying to figure out who she was talking to. “Uh, me?” She asked clarifying it. When Rose nodded, she blushed, a redness creeping up her neck and giving colour to her teal cheeks. “Uh, sorry?”
Rose sat down on her haunches, and innocently licked her paw. “That’s okay Jade.” She replied, her mind completely trailing over the thought of why she was angry at the other Meow in the first place. Jade’s eyes flickered doubtfully, but came and sat next to Rose anyway.
“So, any idea what Spirit wants us to do today?” She asked, curling her tail around her paws delicately. Rose nodded, searching her brain for what Spirit had told her. From what it would seem to onlookers, the falling box had given her a severe case of short term memory loss. The tinsel in the corner triggered her memory.
“She needs us to prepare for Santa because our Pets are too lazy to do it themselves.” She chirped, and Jade’s mouth, like when Rose had originally been told, dropped open. The flower-Meow just giggled.
“What!” Jade exclaimed. “That is ridiculous! Almost impossible! We are just Meows!” Being the more level-headed of the two in the Meow Manor as of yet, Jade immediately refused such a notion, figuring it was impossible.
“Impossible now is it?” Spirit asked, stalking into the room. She held her tail high, obviously displeased with having to go find Rose and finding her back where the angel Meow had started. “Where were you, Rose?” She hissed as she neared her.
The Meow grinned. “That would be a fine question to ask yourself, once you get thrown under a heavy box full of Christmassy trees.” She replied sardonically, her eyes darkening in anger. Spirit looked taken aback at her response, though her composure was quick to recover.
“And I suppose that you are telling me, that as your good friend I would throw a box onto you?” She asked languidly, jumping to the table once more. Rose paused. She didn’t want to insult her friend, after all. She shook her head reluctantly, and Spirit was pleased she managed to win that petty argument.
“Good.” She stated, small smile pulling at her lips. “At least that is settled then. We won’t have to worry about that when Santa comes and thinks of us as naughty Meows.” Jade giggled in response, the only indication that she had been there this whole time.
A patter of feet indicated a new arrival. All three pairs of eyes turned to stare at Heart, another of the Meows staying at the Manor this Christmas. Her eyes scanned over the Meows currently assembled, before yawning, showing her pearly white teeth.
“What is with the dreariness of this place?” She asked, her voice like silk. Her tone was sarcastic in saying this, and it was obvious that Spirit, as the owner of the Manor as currently, was barely holding her temper, eyes flashing.
“I am sorry about that Heart.” She said, as politely as she could, though it was bitter-sweet; the sourness of her tone was detectable even underneath her many layers of pretend. “We are trying. Soon it shall be ready for Christmas.” Spirit smiled, though one could tell it was forced. Heart wrinkled her nose in disgust.
‘Fine. It must be this way then.” She said, waving her tail delicately, the charm in which she got her name tinkling softly. She purred softly, jumping up onto one of the velvet chairs, her teeth bared in delicate pleasure. “I shall wait.”
“Oh no, no, no!” Jade xclaimed angrily. “We are not doing all the work while you sit on your prissy little butt doing God knows what.” And with that said, the teal Meow let off a string of curses at the other that would make a pirate blush.
Heart laughed, her voice like chimes. “Oh, really? I thought that was all you were here for.” She murmured daintily, gazing down at the three like they were vermin. “But don’t expect me to join in you nonsense.” The pale blue Meow turned and curled around herself, while Spirit struggled to hold back a fuming Jade.
Rose just sent glares to the Meow, her nails digging into the carpet. The air between the four crackled with tension, and just when Spirit was about to let Jade maim Heart, Fang strolled in, a casual grin across his face. “What are you ladies doing?” He asked with a smirk. Beside him, Merdore and Skylar stood, the same mocking pleasure chiselled into every part of their faces. The boys critically studied the girls, amusement in their eyes.
“Looks like ya ran into a bit of trouble.” Skylar said with a smile, his voice light. His friends laughed too. The Meows clustered around the ornaments sent chilling scowls their way.
“Ooh, looks like the girls are cranky.” Merdore said, mocking them with such brushing-off, that finally Jade burst free of the restraints put upon her. Instead of going for Heart as was planned, who was also now bristling with displeasure, she leapt for Merdore. Pinning him beneath her forepaws, the Meow hissed,
“Say anything of the sort again and you’ll end up worse than Heart did.” Said Meow just gave a lazy smile, lounging herself off on the chair, allowing the others to do the talking. Merdore was taken completely by surprise, and it took him a few moments for the pale golden cat to register he was the one that was being spoken too.
“Alright, alright.” He said, trying to refrain from allowing the edge to slip into his voice. Jade stepped back, and the two other males put their paws up in surrender. “So,” Merdore continued, dusting himself off, “What exactly are you girls up to?” Each of the guys nodded in agreement, and looked to the others for the answers. Spirit took the lead, as she usually did.
“We’re getting ready for Christmas. We need the tree up and the lights strung and the tinsel thrown over framed pictures and baubles put on the branches and ...” She continued, counting them off one by one on her paws.
“We get the picture!” The guys cried in unison, staring at her in bewilderment. Spirit snickered, and a few giggles were heard behind her. “What do you want us to do then?” They asked and stared at each other as they spoke in-time once again. The girls shared glances, a lot forming in each of their minds.
“Uh-oh.” Fang muttered, backing away, as his mind told him that he knew what that look meant. Merdore stared at him in bemusement, before his gaze flickered back to Spirit as he waited for her to speak. Skylar began to look unsure too, as if trusting the female Meows was a bad idea in itself. Just waiting for them to stop giving evil smirks was excrutiating pain for each of the curious guys. “Just get it over with!”
Heart, Spirit, Jade, and Rose shared one last look, before they pounced. Barely a few minutes later, the boys were doing all the work while the girls lapped up drinks, soaking in the sight. Merdore strolled over, a bead of sweat on his furry brow. “Can’t we have at least a bit to drink?” He asked, his tail swishing in annoyance.
Spirit looked up at what they had done so far. The tree was up and covered in tinsel, the lights strung, and the baubles had been placed. It was perfect, though, each of them reminded themselves, there was still the outside to be done. Spirit shared a glance with everyone. Rose nodded reluctantly, Heart gave a mere tip of the head, and Jade sighed, nodding also. With a smile, Spirit turned back to the other Meow.
“Okay. You can take a break now.” The boys whooped and cheered, instantly surrounding the four girls to claim their prize for working so hard. Rose handed out the drinks, laughing in amusement, and Jade passed around snacks to the three. A poof of air and smoke, and another Meow rolled down the chimney, causing the seven to jump in surprise.
The Meow was black and covered in soot, though even Rose, who was [hypothetically] half blind, saw that he was fat. Beneath all the ashes a dim glimpse of a hat could be seen, and a few white hairs poked out here and there on the Meows face. It took a few moments for them to register who it was.
“Oh, my gawd.” Jade muttered, staring.
“Is it really?” Rose asked in bewilderment.
“Surely he can’t come this early!” Fang said.
“What the hell is happening?” Spirit yelled, flying above the others who were jumping ten feet in the air already to see what was happening. When she saw the Meow, she pushed her way passed the others and collapsed on the ground in front of him, shaking in excitement.
“Hellooooo.” Spirit said in a patronising tone, as if she were speaking to a child, or more to the fact, an alien. “Do you speak English?” She asked, continuing with the same tone. The Meow looked at her in confusion. She paused, momentarily forgetting everything. He didn’t speak English?
When Spirit opened her mouth to speak again, the unknown Meow waved her away. Spirit huffed angrily and stalked back to her chair. “I speak English, and Spanish, and French, and Russian, and Italian, and Indian, and Chinese, and Japanese.” He said in a low voice, sitting back. The seven’s mouths dropped open in surprise. He laughed at their gaping face, his chest heaving. “Did I come at a bad time?”
“Certainly not Santa!”
