Well; I would say go for the one you want the most. Pay close attention to artists streams as you maybe able to snag a FCFS you like in the stream. That's how I snagged my two ladies. Secondly I'd say be passionate let your love for it show in the work you do. And even if you don't win be proud of what you did

especially in art comps.

You may want to look into other equids the artist has made and looked at whatever the winners used to get the equid. That way, you might have a better understanding of what the artist is looking for and what they like to see when people apply for their equid? :3

For a writing contest, never read someone else's first. NEVER. It always made me want to copy instead of staying original and it'd give me a rough time writing something without copying ideas. I forced myself not to read anyone's story for Fjordquid and then I won him. Of course you can read stories after you've made yours. This has just always helped me.
And for art, just try to be as original as you can. And put lots of effort into it. c:
