A tail two feet long? Wow. Zai is a shiba inu and a pretty big dog, but her tail isn't even that big. Amazing how different sizes are in the animal kingdom.

Gonna throw this out there, even though it's a bit late-- Shiba Inus are actually not that big...? Shibas are like the weeny toy version of the Japanese spitz dog, with the middle one being... Uhhh... Well, there's four of 'em (Kai dog, Kishu, Ainu Dog, Shikoku). And then the large one is obviously the Akita. Shibas are... Maybe 16 inches tall? At the largest? My Papillon's 13 inches, and he's by no means a large dog. Did you mean a different breed? 'Cause Shibas don't get to be two feet tall, let alone have a tail that's that long.

Mostly I think the treehuggers have long tails for ~balance~, and I'm guessing that landlubber viverrids evolved from treehugger viverrids rather than the other way around (like for example grey foxes and tanookees, which obviously don't have ubertails, though they're just "LOOK MA I CAN CLIMB A TREE YAYYYY oh lord now i have to get down" rather than the general treehuggery Tarzan thing), so the long tail is probably just a remnant of their bygone days of Tarzaning.

I'd say go with semi-retractable, because the sites that say non-retractable are probably using it in reference to that grey foxes don't have, for example, a cat's ability to fully retract its claws. :3 Whereas the sites that say semi-retractable are thinking outside the box.

They did indeed. Genets are the most primitive viverrids, and according to some sources, the oldest model of carnivore :) They're treethings that can often be quite happy on the ground, and from there the treecivets went up and the groundcivets went down and the linnies went...more carnivorous.

Wow, I forgot I had an account here. Pffff lame Kel is lame xD
O I C WE HAVE GROUZE HURR NAO. Hiiii Prince *waves*

Um, let me think of something to make this not spam. Um.....I GOT IT! I'll do the interesting facts thing I saw a couple people doing. Yes, I'm unoriginal.

Interesting Ethiopian Wolf facts

1) E Wolves are kinda like the n00b wolf since we're only semi-social and independent. Which is very different from our weirdo social, group work loving, dependent cousins. I'll never understand Greys or even Arctics with their coldness. They confuse me with their strange ways. I like Reds though, Reds are super cool like me. And then there are the cousins I know next to nothing about, like Timbers and everyone else. I should brush up on my wild family history instead of going through a crisis with the domesticated ones >>

2) Africa's Wolf and everything African is awesome. End of story.

Yeaaaah, not too interesting. I could probably find more fun facts if I wasn't so lazy right now.

Kel, have you looked into the less-well-known grey wolf subspecies? I mention it because for a long I have been convinced my friend (who was on TDF for a little while) was a wild dog, but nothing seemed to fit her social habits. She was a dhole for a while, and then looked into Ethiopian wolves fairly extensively and they were a VERY close fit, but not quite right. Then we stumbled across Arabian wolves and they're almost perfect from what we can tell. They have a loosey-goosey social thing and don't mind being alone. o:

You guys do at least a page overnight, and I used to read them all. Now I can't be bothered.

Anything interesting that I should know?

@Com: I'm actually looking into 2 Pariahs at the moment, Azawakh and Thai Ridgeback. I've been doing research on Azawakh for a while and when I'm done with them I'll research Thai Ridgebacks. And if even they don't fit I'll keep the notes I have to help someone else or remind myself why I'm not one of those c:

@Beth: No, I haven't. I may have glanced over a bunch of the Grey subspecies but I haven't gone deep with research with any of them except for Reds. I'll definitely look into Arabians and the other subspecies more now. Thanks 8D

I've actually tried to look at Arabian wolves, but I can only find a couple paragraphs that have been copied and pasted all over the internet. I've been intrigued by what people have said about them (though they're probably more jackal-like than I could see myself being, regardless of how close jackals and pariahs tend to be) but I just can't find much on them. >> Unless TDF is hiding an analysis from me.

Indian subspecies might be worth a look too. If they are even a subspecies. I think they may be one of the six species of wolf that apparently exist, but the taxonomy is all screwy. Plus, people get all confused with arabian wolves, golden jackals, indian wolves, and "indian" jackals, but they all have pretty similar social habits. So ya. ;)

Edit: Yes Comanche, the amount of information is very little and very unclear on arabian wolves. Try searching 'canis aureus lupaster' or 'canis lupaster.' That is supposedly the egyptian jackal, but sometimes its the egyptian wolf too. xD

Also, I think this is a good site for wolves: http://www.cosmosmith.com/wolfpage.html
