Halim looked up in vague interest at the increased activity in the ice rink. He smiled a little as he saw a guy smash right into one of the girls that had been way too preoccupied with her two feet to see three feet in front of her. Halim was unused to seeing so much interaction in the ice rink like this--crashes and impromptu conversations--while he worked here, but it was nice to have the entertainment all the same.
He handed the next person a pair of ice skates before telling one of his coworkers that he was taking a break. Hakim was technically on winter break, so by all rights as a high school senior, he figured, he should be sleeping in right now and not caring about the SAT he'd have to take in a few weeks. Instead, his parents decoded he should earn a 'living'. What sort of living could he make from being a clerk at an ice rink? He mentally shook his head as he approached the edge of the rink [although he didn't step onto the ice] and called out, "Is everyone alright, over there?" Halim was grinning, knowing that everyone was fine but amused all the same by their semi-awkward plight. He leaned against the Plexiglas and didn't even attempt to hide the fact that he found this hilarious.

An icy holiday. How heartwarming.
I made my way around the ice rink full of cheerful people, all of them dressed up cozily despite the winter weather surrounding them. The frosty atmosphere at the ice rink was clearly visible once one paid attention to the slight red shades of others’ nose tips. They didn’t seem to be bothered by the obvious fact that it was cold – maybe I was the only one affected by the sudden change of weather at this small town referred to as Wilshire. Temporarily moving to Wilshire from South Africa for the holidays was quite a big adjustment for me – I never actually made the effort to note how cold places really could be in the winter. South Africa was not a drop in the bucket compared to Wilshire when it came to the cold weather, and I was sure that by the time I would get used to the nippy cold, I would be sent home again.
I inwardly cringed when my thoughts suddenly diverted to focus on Louisville and the memories of my childhood. Mother would have loved coming to Wilshire with me for the holidays, and so would Jake. Connor… I was not so sure if he enjoyed life as much as he was supposed to, so surely he would not have enjoyed coming to Wilshire. When I left home to come here, Connor hadn’t been at home for three days – he left no note saying where he had gone or what he was planning on doing. He also didn’t contact me, but whether he contacted Jake, I wasn’t sure. Connor was becoming more and more mysterious as the days passed by, but his life was his life, not mine. My stepfather was now close to being a stranger to me, for I haven’t seen him in the past month, despite the fact that he occasionally passed by at home to check if things were still in order. Jake, on the other hand, I hadn’t seen in over a year. It was really starting to bother me because he was my brother – not full-blood, but half-blood, and even if he was not related to me in any way, he would still have been my brother. Now, I felt so alone in this world, and my self-confidence was starting to crack. I couldn’t allow it to happen, but there was no way I could stop it from happening.
A sudden slip and fall of someone who had been skating beside me made me come back to reality with a slight jump, my thoughts fading away like the wind picking up a snowflake and letting it drift off until it melts under the sunlight. But, I was positive that no sunlight could melt the snowflakes here in Wilshire – the weather was too cold to allow them to melt. I helped the person scramble up and watched them skate away again gracefully, my stomach all of a sudden feeling unstable and I was desperate to get out of this place. I awkwardly started to skate towards the railing, doing my best to avoid contact with all the other people who whizzed past me as I made my way to the railing. Being in the middle of the ice rink and suddenly deciding to exit the rink was not a very good idea after all; I came to the conclusion that the people in Wilshire were passionate about what they were doing, and they did not necessarily give way to a newcomer. Well, that was kind of my first impression of the whole place. I was planning on exploring every hook and cranny of this small town, and meetting as many people as possible. But, despite my self-confidence, I struggled to manage.
Feeling reluctant to go home right there and then, I made myself comfortable at a table that overlooked the ice rink. My eyes scanned over the area and I noticed a few teenagers gathering at another table quite close to where I was, and I wondered what the whole Wilshire holiday had in store for me. I secretly hoped it would be the best holiday of my entire life, despite the fact that I was alone. For now.
Adrian's form is completed - thought I'd just let you all know, due to the fact that it was still a work in progress earlier today. Here is his first post.. Anyone available to interact with him? :3 }]

In what seemed like merely a blink of an eye, Eve was surrounded by not one, but three people, two of which she had never met before. The other person was Fynn, her best and closest friend in Wilshire, and Eve was thankful she was now here with her. Shaking her head a tiny bit to snap herself back to reality, she registered the past couple events and consecutively addressed them one by one.
Standing up and turning towards the short girl with the younger sister - who apparently knew Fynn - Eve smiled apologetically and said, with her slight Italian accent, "Sorry about that. I should've grabbed your bag for you." She stuck her hand out, and properly introduced herself. "My name is Eve Terranova, I'm new in town. Nice to meet you." Then, swiveling around to face the tall young man, she spoke again. "And it's a pleasure to meet you too. Don't worry about bumping into me, I'm fine." Phew, introductions were over. Eve was used to initiating them, as she had always done at her parents' parties, so this just felt like protocol. Although it wasn't in her nature to speak out right most of the time, she didn't have a problem with it as long as it was restricted to a small group of people. One could say public speaking was not her thing.
The clerk at the rink called over, and Eve just lifted a hand to signal that yes, everyone was alright. She threw over a nod and a hasty smile before finally facing Fynn and englufing her in a hug. "Glad you're here. It was about time," she said, nudging her friend gently in the ribs. Remembering that they were not alone, Eve decided to take advantage of the slightly awkward situation they were all in and invite the three of them to take a seat around the table. It was a perfect oppurtunity to meet a few nice strangers. "Would you guys like to stay for a cup of hot cocoa? Please, it's on me."
As she waited for the response of the others, a light dusting of snow began to feather down. One cool speck met Eve's face, and she smiled. This was her first time being outside in Wilshire as it snowed. The setting and scenery could not be any more fitting, what with the fairy lights surrounding the rink and Christmas music playing. Eve tossed her wavy hair over one shoulder and exhaled, watching her visible breath disappear into the air.

Fynn glanced up at yet another boy approaching them, and she inwardly sighed with annoyance at his obvious amusement at her best friend almost being injured and plummeted by another guy. However, she said nothing, as confrontation was not her style. It seemed as though a bunch of people had teleported there, and poor Eve was in the middle of it all. She watched her best friend introduce herself and she smiled. She didn't do long, elaborate introductions that required and wasted energy, so she offered her name. "Fynn Maerr Hawking." She nodded as if that was enough.
Fynn chuckled and hugged Eve back in a warm embrace, glad to see her friend. Lately, Fynn hadn't gotten out of her house at all, therefore leading up to the fact that the only time Fynn really talked to Eve was over Skype or Facebook or some other social networking site. In fact, for the last month, the only times Fynn had seen Eve in person was when she needed to go shop for groceries or new clothes or something like that. That must explain why she didn't know most of the people that were now surrounding them. "Even Fynn Maerr Hawking can't hide from the world forever, you know," Fynn joked in response to Eve, her eyes squinting as to lessen the intensity of the color of her eyes. "As much as I'd love to take you up on that offer, the last time we were here I made you buy me about 5 cups of hot cocoa and bags of chips and junk. I'm afraid, due to my ever-noble conscience, I'll have to pay for myself this time."

James Turner
James gulped. The usual anxiety began to settle in as more an more people seemed to crowd around the small coffee table, and James couldn't help but noticing they all looked a couple of years younger than he did. They all seemed relatively comfortable interacting; it seemed they all knew each other from before, not really suprising, considering the small size of the town and the time they must have passed here already. He passed his sweaty hands over his tights, and looked around, to distract his mind over the situation, to the ice rink. However, he felt compelled to look away, feeling it would be rude to ignore everyone's conversation.
James caught a few names; the one sitting down was Eve, her close friend, Fynn. He studied their faces; pretty little things probably a couple of years to young for him, not that they would like him, anyways. He let out a small sigh, wishing he were more of an extrovert than the quiet person he had become.
"Is everything alright?"
James turned to the strong voice of some guy - a clerk from the ice-rink, it seemed - and blushed beet red as he noted a frown of concern, probably at the small incident that had occurred a few moments ago that involved him almost crashing into a glass surface. The young man attempted a nochalant shrug, and failed, making it seem like he had a tight not in the muscles in his back, and glanced sideways to the guy.
"It's fine," he intoned nervously, a hint of dismissal in his voice - considering he didn't want to attract any more attention from anyone, a clerk having wandered over and such - which apparently would be ignored seeing as the guy would settle down on his elbows on the table. James suppressed a frown, and looked at his feet, embarrassed. He didn't know how to act in such a situation.
The one with the little girl's name he did not manage to catch and he looked the joyous youngling up and down, her joviality bringing a small, crooked smile to his face. He turned his attention to the small girl, seeing as her sister might be trying to follow the banter between the other two, and he bent down on his knees to be face-to-face with her. "Did you have fun skating?" he asked, eyes bright. Somehow, James always managed to interact with more ease with kids than with teens or adults. Their words did not hide secret feelings or meanings; they were usually more straightforward and, although abrupt and blunt, easier to have a conversation with without having to rack one's brain on the implications of a sentence or words. I used to ice-skate. I loved all kinds of winter sports before -" James cut off his sentence, letting it trail into the air and biting his lip slightly, hoping the girl wouldn't notice.
Before the accident.
"Anyways, do you come here often? It's my first time here. Maybe you could show me around?" James smiled, as to relieve certain tension from the conversation.
"My name is James." He popped in the sentence with hesitation as his memory struggled to do what was second nature to anyone relatively normal. Even though the information was rather irrelevant to him, it mightn't be to everyone else. They were all producing names, it might seem strange if he was the only nameless in the small group.

Halim's grin widened a little as he saw one of the girls shooting him a reproachful look for not being a bit more sympathetic, but what was really funny was the guy's [James, apparently] embarrassment when he told Halim that everything was fine. He blinked in mild surprise when the girl--Eve, she said her name was--offered to get them all cocoa. Inviting random strangers to cocoa seemed a bit of a strange move to Halim. Still, he didn't see any reason to say no. It wasn't like he was eager to go back to chauffeuring ratty sneakers into cubbies.
"Don't worry about paying for it," Halim called to them. "I get a discount. It'll be easier if I just pay for them. Feel free to reimburse me, though." Halim gave them all a friendly smile to show that it honestly wasn't necessary to pay him back, since the price for each cup basically became two dollars [making this a grand total of ten dollars, including him] with his discount. He patted the Plexiglas before going around to the exit of the since rink. He was taking a strangely initiative attitude today [even though that description made very little grammatical sense].
"I'm Halim, by the way," he introduced himself when the people that were coming would leave the rink.

Yet another person had arrived at the small table that Sara-Ray had left her bag under. It seemed like he worked here, as he had asked whether everything was alright before he came over. From his appearance, Ray thought he looked okay - he didn't look like he was suddenly going to whip a knife out or anything and attack her.
Realising that pretty much everyone had introduced themselves, and that they were sitting down, when Sara-Ray spoke, she sounded very faint and not at all confident like she wanted to sound. "Ray." Flushing slightly when she realised she hadn't actually introduced herself very well, she added, in the same volume, "Sara-Ray, but Ray, for short." Wishing she didn't sound so idiotic - for she did, to her own ears at least - she shook one of the other girls' - Eve - hands before looking around her.
Losing track of the conversation that was taking place in front of her between another guy - Halim, she thought his name was - and the two other girls, Ray turned to a conversation between someone she knew inside and out and a guy that she didn't know. "Did you have fun skating?" Watching her little sister look at him with her big blue eyes warmed her heart, and she smiled slightly, letting her sister talk instead of rushing her away like she wanted to. "Yes." It seemed like Wendy had gone shy, a trait Sara had never thought her sister to have. "Ray takes me ice-skating sometimes, when she goes to her practices." Closing her eyes briefly, she barely managed to catch what he said next, " I used to ice-skate. I loved all kinds of winter sports before -"
Opening her eyes with slight concern in them, Sara bent down to her knees too, wrapping her arms around her little sister, who seemed oblivious to the fact that he hadn't finished his sentence. "Anyways, do you come here often? It's my first time here. Maybe you could show me around? My name is James." At this, Wendy's head flew straight up, eyes widening with surprise and happiness. Sara herself was surprised that Wendy wasn't going to jump up and down and clap with excitement. "Yay! I can do that! I'm Wendy!" Her own voice gaining a tiny bit of strength to it, Sara said quietly, "Wendy, mum wanted you back for...for..." Voice fading now, she blushed scarlett, not sure what to say. "Mum wants you back." She finished lamely, staring at the floor instead of at James. Eyes darting up to his, she tried to send him a silent sorry, not sure how to say it. "Maybe some other time?" What started out as a quiet statement had ended up in a question, and it was then that Ray tuned in to the other conversation.
"Would you guys like to stay for a cup of hot cocoa? Please, it's on me." Eve was talking, and, straightening up slightly, Sara looked doubtful. "I, uh, don't know... I have to get her back..." She replied to her, not quite meeting her eyes. "Please Ray? Please!" Listening to her little sister whine at her, for she had obviously been paying more attention than Sara gave her credit for, her resolve broke down. "Okay, for her though." Ray said, blushing slightly - again. Something had happened to her in the past four years, she'd never been this soft before! Rummaging around in her coat pocket, she pulled out a few crinkled ones and handed it to the guy, Halim, when he reached them. "Thank you." She added in a whisper, not quite meeting his eyes either.

James Turner
James raised his eyebrows at the young girl's mention of her sister's ability to skate. "Oh, wow," he mumured, feigning mild surprise. "I suppose she's very good at it if she practices regularly." James couldn't help but smile warmly at the kid's enthusiasm and obvious affection towards her elder sister. At his mention of showing him around, the girl obviously perked up, happy to be assigned something to do amongst this crowd of 'old people'. However, the sister quietly put out the girl's hopes, saying that they'd soon have to leave. He tried to hide his disappointment; he enjoyed younger kids' enthusiasm and his willingness to oblige blended perfectly with their character, in general.
"Maybe some other time?"
James turned his attention from Wendy to Ray, her sister, and smiled nochalantly. "It's alright," he murmured reassuringly. "I understand you have other compromises," he said, raising his eyebrows and scratching the back of his neck with his left hand, akwardly. "Maybe some other time, kiddo, and perhaps your sister could show me her killer skills in the rink," he repeated, finally, to Wendy, then adding a small joke, at which he flicked his nervous gaze towards the elder girl, Ray.
He stood up from his crouch, and gave a small smile to Ray, understanding she wasn't all that comfortable with the situation either. She asked for some cocoa for her sister, then looked about awkwardly, similar to James. He noticed the cold begin to creep along his shoulders and legs as of his pause in exercise, and rubbed his thinly clothed arms quickly as to inspire some warmth into them. Maybe he should get going, but perhaps he should stick about. Ray wasn't that bad, it seemed. Just awkward. Like him.
"Whenever you have to leave, or when your sister finishes her hot chocolate, I might... ermm.. jog you home?" James offered to the girl. "More than anything, I have to get jogging. However warm these t-shirts are meant to be, they only are so if you're excersising," he commented with a hint of sarcasm in his voice, but still jokingly.

As each of the strangers declared their names, Eve tipped her head towards them in greeting. Although no one really took up her offer of paying - which she really had no problem with, considering money was never an issue - she was glad that they all chose to stay nonetheless. As Halim told her of the discount he'd be receiving, she nodded and replied, "That sounds more reasonable. But please, I want to treat you guys - all of you." With that last remark, Eve glanced at Ray with a smile as she reached into her small Coach wristlet (a gift from her grandmother) to produce a ten. Handing it to Halim with a, "thank you", Eve settled back into the metal chair, trying to get as comfortable as she could in the cold chill. The hot cocoa was a good call.
As James finished talking to Ray, Eve glimpsed around the table, briefly creating a mental synopsis of each new person. Both Ray and James seemed the quiet, introverted type, Ray more so than the other one. Though she, too, was not as lively as most other people, Eve was reserved by choice, not nature. It was a different story. Halim, on the other hand, was outspoken and appeared quite comfortable in social situations. Self-assured, maybe. Not necessarily a bad thing, unless pushed past the limit. And of course, there was Fynn, in a category of her own. Defiant, unique, mysterious, even. Eve was very fond of the seventeen year old; they were both alike in some ways and worlds apart in others.
Her brief overview took no more than a minute, but following it was a slightly tense silence. So to start up a discussion, and also because she was curious, Eve asked, "How long have you all been in Wilshire?"
