Darwin Academy, a prestigious and elite school for the most clever and talented young people of the new generation, not forgetting the 'specially talented' and the terribly rich. You will not fail to hear the Academy's name mentioned by scholars and scientists from around the world. Indeed, it was the famous Charles Darwin that the Academy was christened after. From the ages of 13 to 18, the Academy welcomes selective students from all over Great Britain to study and learn from famous professors. Extensive extra-curricular is offered, and encouraged, for all students to participate in. To be enrolled into Darwin Academy promises no disappointments. That is, if you get in.

After the outrageous scandal of the Axis Powers 100 years ago, this peculiar school was founded. You see, the whole case of the Axis Powers was suitably named after it's test subjects - extraordinary young adults and teenagers chosen to be modified by science engineers. These young people were altered: they were given powers. Special DNA that allowed them to perform unimaginable things. It was successful after many trial and errors. The powers varied from person to person, but the successful ones all had incredibly improved knowledge and brain power. But, alas, some of the older teenagers got too cocky, too ambitious. One young test subject held the power of fire; one click of his fingers and brilliant fire would appear. He was by far the most advanced in his powers and also the one with the most curiosity and a stubborn will. Subject 1, later formally known as Johnathon Ascot, would eventually blow up the whole experiment.

Johnathon had the world's most dangerous thing in his power - fire. He loved the power and relished in it's beauty and warmth it offered him. The whole Axis Powers experiment was kept hidden away from the public's prying eyes, no-one but the government and the scientists knew of such things. The test subjects were treated as marvelous results, instead of real people. Johnathon longed to be released from the tiny cell he was trapped in and to rediscover the world once more - and he knew that his fire power was the key to escaping. By careful observation, he learnt quickly that the test building was locked by a main key card system, which branched off to separate locks for different departments. The main system also linked to the fire alarms.

Long story short, Johnathon managed to set off the fire alarm but ended up setting half the building on fire. A scrutinizing story was released and labelled by the press as a 'scandal': the whole project was disbanded within hours. The government apologized on behalf of the scientists and strongly argued that they knew nothing of it. The test subjects were all given new identities to carry on life. Most of them were old enough to carry on with life, but some of the younger ones were given to select foster homes. Some became terminally depressed from the sudden lack of routine and many hated their existence. The public detested them and threatened many; they hated the idea of a superhuman race. Darwin Academy accepted many under their wing. Being so remote out in the countryside, many people didn't bother with it. Soon, the glamour faded away and many people forgot about the Axis Powers. Many Darwin Academy graduates led normal lives after the media lost interest, but many still feel the paranoia of being watched.

Many people are actually very distantly related to the many Axis Powers subjects. It is rare that a person without any blood relation to the Axis Powers is as clever as someone who is. Powers have also been passed down through generations and young teens can find themselves blessed with greater intelligence and a power (either in a weakened state, mutation of the power and rarely, the full power itself). Darwin Academy is now an accredited school that nurtures raw talents and intelligence. The school prides itself on the variety of students they have and are not biased on whether you have a power or not - you just need to be able to make the grade. Headmistress Ms Havesham personally reviews each application and selects the most promising students. Each applicant is subjected to an intense test and the most successful are to attend an interview before only 8 students are granted a place.

And it so happens, that eight lucky students are offered a place at Darwin Academy. And so it happens, that these eight people are the ones who pull the thread that unravels everything.

I'd like to keep this as active as it can be, because then interesting sub-plots//plots can happen and the roleplay will be able to develop. I don't have a problem with posting every few days, as long as you keep up with everyone else. I have set this roleplay as semi-lit+, but I'm not demanding a word count or a minimum; as long as it's good quality and relevant to the roleplay. I don't mind whether your post is plain or pretty, but remember any pictures are counted as spam now.

I don't mind what your character's personality is, as long as it's not a gary//mary-sue : no-one likes a perfect character who can do everything and has a perfect life. Also, try to have different powers, be creative with the kinds of powers you can have! Try to develop the powers too; Darwin Academy is a place to practice powers without having to hide the fact that you have powers i.e nobody should be amazing at using their powers.

As I said before, try not to have an all-powerful character that can do everything. Using your powers will cause you to lose energy, unless you can derive the energy from a different medium; for example if it was the 'water' power, the energy can be taken from a water source. The only exception is involuntary powers such as 'lie' uses the minimum amount of energy and isn't classed as a body energy derive. Practicing a power gradually will make you able to use your power for longer. Think of using the power as a marathon: you will need to train up before running it fully and properly. Your characters can have two different powers, but one of the powers must be a low-level power.

Darwin Academy is split into four different house, which compete against each other in the termly house games. They don't hold any restrictions for students but for assemblies, students are expected to sit with their houses. The different houses are represented by a mythical creature, and students are asked to wear their house pin at all times during school hours. Houses are assigned by the Headmistress.

Typical lessons can include 'Powers and it's Uses'; 'Darwin History'; 'Advancing with your Power'; 'Practise makes Perfect'; 'Ethics of being All-Powerful', some of which sound ridiculous. Normally these power-associated lessons are double periods, which means your normal subjects fill in the gaps. Students should address all teachers as 'Professor' and make notes in class. The annual tests determine if you stay at Darwin or not.

The picturesque village of Maple Valley lies in the green hills and pastures about 10 minutes from Darwin Academy. Students need to get permission from a teacher before leaving the school grounds, in groups no smaller than two. The village houses some of the graduated students of Darwin Academy and there are some special shops where old students showcase their talents. 'Mic Macs' is a particularly fun toy shop where the shop owner, Fergus McMackingson, has the power of life. The shop is always lively and full of toys running around. There is also a sweet shop called 'Dainty & Co' which Miss Daniels has the power to heighten the senses; the shop always smells of luxurious chocolate and toffee sweets. There are many more interesting shops which aim to please the students of Darwin Academy.

Students are urged to not stray too far away from Maple Valley, as snatchers are known to try and kidnap students and ask for stupid amounts of ransom.

In the school, on the east wing are the dormitories. Girls and boys with separate accommodation with four to a dorm. These are assigned pre-term by the housekeepers. School meals are held in the Rectory, unless you go to the tea shop for lunch. The
There is an extensive school ground, with gardens around the school building and wilder areas towards the border. To the east of the school are the forests, with a hidden cave and lots of footpaths into the local village and to the cliffs. To the north has the boating lake and the tea shop, open from 9am - 4pm.

School uniform must be worn during the school hours. Boys version and the girls version. Any hair accessories should be black. Blazers are optional.

Welcome students to Darwin Academy, new and old! Please unpack your belongings into your dorms and prepare for lesson. First period starts 9.15 am - sharpish! New students report to the Head Office for a briefing please. Professor Wolfe is organizing the termly 'Darwin Defenders' game so please be prepared! There are many new *ahem* surprises to this new term's game; he's decided to make it extra special for the newbies! Please can everyone sign up for a club, an extensive list has been put up in the foyer!

James' name doesn't really have a meaning specifically, but his father is called William, which he has passed onto James. Benedict is his grandfather's name. He hates his full name and never mentions it fully.

Yes, he hates nicknames. People used to call him Jam, until they got a signature deathly stare off James. He thinks nicknames are far too casual and prefers to call people by their proper name too. Practise what you preach.

'' I'm not the most sporty, or the fittest either but I'm just average. ''
James is quite the average boy, but let's start from the top. He has short, blonde hair that sweeps to the right side. The colour is best described as a honey blonde with a beige blonde top layer. It lies pretty straight, but tends to waver slightly when it's humid. James has noticeably darkish green eyes which look like forest leaves. When you see them in the bright sun, they tend to look emerald green which sparkle. James also has to wear glasses for reading, as he is long sighted. Normally, they're tucked away in his pocket somewhere. His face is quite lean, though not gaunt. His most eye-catching feature of his face is his nose which is quite long and thin. Don't let his passive face fool you, he is always ready to insult you on anything.

His hair is predominately blonde. James likes to keep it short, but not too short. Mainly honey blonde with a lighter beige blonde top layer. He likes to keep it brushed, but doesn't bother with using hair products.

From afar and in dim light, his eye colour looks like dark summer leaves. Though in the shining sun or close up, they are actually more like emeralds. Most people tend to comment on them but James would prefer to have brown eyes. Both his parents had brown eyes so the mystery of the green eyes goes on. Green is too mysterious and proud for his demure-like face, even though it is quite fitting for his attitude.

Like I said, James isn't overweight or underweight. James' physique is neither fat or skinny; mostly, he tends to eat little and often.

Outcast James has always been a 'social outcast' because of his unwillingness to participate in sports and social activities. He does like getting involved with other people because he is particular about his friends. Sometimes, the way he speaks and his mannerisms also deter people away from being friends with him. When he was at school, he was teased dreadfully about his name, which was always read aloud in the register. He prefers not to engage in social contact unless forced to. He doesn't have many friends, or people in general for that matter, which he can tolerate. When he is thinking or playing piano, he likes to be on his own. When he was younger, he was home-schooled by his well-educated father, which meant that it was hard for him to fit into a school, where everybody already had their own friendship groups. Sometimes, his strong opinions and critical views aren't for everyone, but he is stubborn - he will say the truth and won't withhold anything.
Proud The one thing he detests above all others is losing. He can't stand to lose to anything and will be very competitive, especially with things he has a chance in. Competitions or challenges that he doesn't have much knowledge of or sport-related he will not participate; James would rather not compete than lose. As stated before, he does have high opinions and can be very critical. James isn't afraid to speak his mind to his peers, especially if they instigated the argument. Sometimes, he will refuse help because he thinks it shows certain weakness. Favours are also something he tries to steer clear of. He doesn't like owing people anything and feels a certain responsibility to return the favour. He will never admit he is wrong because he hates the idea of weakness. James likes to uphold a certain image of himself, and won't be afraid to taunt others.
Pessimist Rigid and reserved are probably the best words to describe him. James is always apprehensive of meeting new people and making conversation with them, because of the teasing from school. Some people describe him as a cynic and pessimist, which he is to a certain extent. James doesn't like seeing the 'brighter side' because he thinks that the life he lives, and knows, now is the only reality. When he hears of dreams and aspirations, he silently laughs. This only is because his own dreams haven't really been fulfilled. He accepts his future and likes to pursue his father's career - to be a lawyer or solicitor. His somewhat bitter attitude could almost be said to be the result of a rocky childhood.
Curiosity James is a very curious person. He likes challenging theories and people too; especially in heated debates. At school, he was on the debate team. This can often mean that he argues just out of interest, not hate. Sometimes, James can have the odd occasion where curiosity overwhelms him. This is often triggered by some memory or action, by someone else or himself. Like, he'll spontaneously spout, "Let's go sky-diving". He wants to experience life to the full and secretly like the adrenalin rush which his father despises. His curiosity is a result of his father's stern routine and obsession with order.
Gentleman Everyone you ask will say that James is polite. Even if he hates you inside, he will at least be civil with you. He learned his manners from both of his parents from a young age and doesn't fail to remember them. He believes in manners and has high morals. Once you get to know him better, he is a lot more open. Although, he never forgets to say 'thank you' or 'please'. It bothers him when his friends or acquaintances are rude too. Often, he is true to his word.

James had a rather rocky start to life; his mother was constantly sick and his father was very busy with his businesses. The earliest memory James had of his father was the portrait hung in the foyer, his father sat proud and stone-like in the painting. "Your father is a good man." His nurse used to tell him, always gazing into the lifeless eyes of his father. James' mother, on the other hand, was bed-bound during the winter months. He used to celebrate his birthday alone in his study, humming the tunes of 'Happy Birthday' whilst he peeled back the brown paper to reveal a tattered book the servants used to get him. True, James had a privileged upbringing, with maids and butlers at his every whim. But yet he was alone in his grand house, with only the shadows to keep him company. Attending a school was never really an option for James and he spent many hours under the scrutinizing eye of his appointed scholar, Mr Halstead. James never socialised with others, only seldom seen when his father held dinner parties and introduced him as his heir. Manner, poise and way of speaking were drilled into him as he was expected to be courteous and polite when he was with his father's important business partners. He learnt to dislike social events and people in general.

By the age of 15, James had already mastered the way of manipulating and deceiving people with a smile. One twinkling smile was all that was needed to persuade the gentry and the ladies that he was a perfect son, but he hated the very idea of it. Soon he grew almost bitter, but he had a smile still; yet underneath the smile was nothing. James could not describe that feeling, but it felt like nothing. No heart, no love, no tenderness. The only thing he does like is the beach early in the morning, for the sun warms his cold hands and the gentle lapping shore washes the worries. James has always been expected to uphold the Rotherington name and his father is adamant that James obeys him.

And James' mother? She died on the coldest winters night when James was only 10. He remembers looking up at his father, seeing the stone-hard expression he holds so well. James never cried for his mother; how could he when she was never really there? Only an echo in the shadows.

Fire is a dangerous thing. James first learnt that he had the power to manipulate fire when his mother died. The rooms in his house were always cold and he always yearned for warmth. It came as a surprise and he has a small burn on the inside of his wrist where the fire burned him. The power of fire is a tricky thing, because the user must be completely in control and calm; if the controller is not, then the fire can be wild. James doesn't like practicing his power because he is afraid of losing the control. He has a very limited use of it and he is a indirect descendant of the infamous Johnathon Ascot. He can derive the energy from the sun, so his power works best in the day.

The power has affected James' health in the past, his power is still unstable and volatile in the way that it can sap his energy quickly. It is very unpredictable and he has a weakened state of health in the winter when the weather is cloudy. He doesn't like winter because he always feels tired during those months.

Description;; Standing at 5"6 Sierra isn't the tallest for her age. Her body is slim although she does have muscly arms that means she feels uncomfortable wearing anything strapless or the like. Her hair is long and naturally wavy (on the verge of curly) but Sierra straightens it every day, straightening the curves into big waves. Her torso is strong and some could debate that she has a four pack. It's not something she really loves about herself but it does show the effot she puts into her sports. The girl's face is long and angular with sharp cheekbones and a dimple in her chin. Her lips are full, and when she smiles properly it's almost goofy; too big for her face. Sierra's least prominent feature are probably her eyes; they're blue and with her long, highlighted blonde hair, they don't stand out much. It's not helped that her eyelashes aren't the longest.
Personality;; Sierra is cynical and doubtful about a lot of things but when she gets behind something with her heart, she'll stick with it, but not without looking at the worst outcomes as well. Sierra doesn't get behind many things and if she does you could bet quite a bit that mainly it's going to benefit herself more than anyone else. And sometimes she gets too far behind something and it becomes almost like an obsession, which she can't get rid off. At least you can count on her for being loyal. Another thing about this blonde is that you have to remember she's extremely clever and if you're going to get into an argument with her, make sure you know the facts 100% first, or she will probably beat you. She doesn't boast about her talent, but strives to improve it and it's only - really - if you p*ss her off that she'll get riled and through sharp comments at you, that could be close to bragging. However she knows that saying something bad about another person that's true during a fight is something you should never do because you can't apologise for saying that, because it is true. So she's cynical, loyal, ambitious, clever and doesn't brag. But what about the Sierra inside, when no one is looking? Well, to be truthful, it's not very different. Except she sings and expresses herself through different outlets that she would never show to another person. Sierra adores privacy and she respects other peoples. She grew up in a house full of twenty-two other kids and then privacy was like treasure; rare and amazing. So now, somewhere where she can get privacy, she craves it and even abuses it occasionally. Besides this, Sierra is dry and sarcastic. If someone says someting she finds obvious or stupid, she'll reply with a dry comment or sarcastic remark. She doesn't meant to hurt people but she can, and does. It certainly isn't her best trait.

Appearance-wise, Olivia is pretty average. She has a small build and fairly mediocre appearance. She has simple light blonde hair and fair skin that burns easily when under the scorching sun. Small soft lips adorn her seemingly flawless face, though her most awe-worthy features are her eyes. It's sometimes hard to discern whether they're green or blue, but the deep color in them makes her appear so much more complex despite her otherwise plain reflection.

Her hair, as has been said before, is blonde. It's normally light in color. Olivia will only air dry her hair. After running the brush through it a few times, she does nothing else with it. She also hates using hair spray or any other hair products like it.

And then it gets better. Strength. Speed. Stamina. Her coordination precise. Of course, she is also an empath - that has more to do with her senses, though. Added up, one would say she is pretty bad a$$, if only she could control her powers.

Because many people in her family tree have - or had, in some cases - powers, Olivia has the potential to become something incredible. But because it is her father who doesn't have any power except his ability to persuade, Olivia has much trouble controlling her power. It comes and goes at random and if she tries to hard, she gets head aches that bring tears to her eyes.
