Nicely said d: I have to agree with you on that... When I have a charater, I want to be the one to have created them. Like abandoned said, it has to be your own words, or what really defines him/her to be yours?

Agreed, Cloud. I prefer writing my own characters, as when I roleplay them, I really feel their personalities, and envolve them over time. About the previous discussion - My characters usually have a little unusual names, but not overly unusual, though nothing is unusual these days were people try to call their kids Devil or @ yes, the @ sign, both were banned in different places, according to link.

Anyway - if you peeve so much, avoid them. Nobody is forcing you to take part in roleplays with characters you don't agree with, nor do you have to jump through the forums to find your peeves. Chill. Do the characters you like, roleplay with people you like and leet everyone else do the same without the fear of being judged and talked about elsewhere. Judge if you must, but don't do it for every one to see. If someone has a"straight as a board and will never be anything else" characters, leave it. It doesn't matter, does it? [this coming from a bi-curious person]

Sorry... I didn't mean to offend anyone, but I know I used to peve about all types of roleplaying things, but I've thought it over and that's my opinion.

Also, cloud did you see my reply?

The Semi-Literate+ Roleplayer's Club

Postby - serendipity » Sat Dec 08, 2012 5:20 am

I know this went away a while ago, but I didn't have time to reply last night so I'm chucking my lot in there now c: Perfect characters annoy me yet after reading this topic I'm not entirely certain if I'm guilty or not. My characters tend to be smart and attractive but mainly those are the only two traits, I think, that make them fall into the perfect category. Yet three of my current characters are completely different to this. William has a voice in his head that is a whole other person and tells him what to do etc. [kind of schizophrenia] and because of this it means he's extremely controversial to the normal guy you would find in a roleplay. HE has anger issues, gets attatched to certain things and so many negative traits they completely outweight the good ones. But he just can't help it. Another new character - one I haven't been able to use yet, Carla - is awful. She's hateful, crabby, snarky, greedy, malicous and a ton of others words. And her good traits are that she is rich, impulsive and she has good judgement. She's certainly not likeable. Then I have another new character - not used in any roleplays that have actually started, Allie - who is likeable but certainly not perfect.

But what I don't like about perfect characters? They're all the same and people are so generic about them. Even naming them "perfect" is generic. Who says they're perfect? Why do you have to be pretty, tall, tan, blonde hair, blue eyes to be perfect? Why do you have to be rich? A perfect person could be someone who's clever, friendly and funny. They could be the ugliest being on earth. It's just the way people percieve them. If you yourself decide not to think of them as a perfect character and find the flaws through the good stuff the person has written about, you can make them unperfect.

I also really would like to join/make a literate/high semi literate roleplay where the characters self-harm or have pyhscological problems but these problems aren't common and these characters aren't whiny. Or just a roleplay where the characters are real and not, well, "perfect". [And quickly, on names; people do have uncommon names. I went to an international school for four years and going there you do see a ton of unusual names. Yet these people have come from perfectly average families who are middle-class and named Jane and John]

Would someone be willing to look at my characters and judge them; and be really brutal so I know where to edit etc.

Not only that, but we've all had that roleplay that we REALLY want to join, but we just don't have the time to make a character. If someone else could write a history, or a physical description, that takes out a big chunk of time.

I do value your guys' opinions though! I don't want to set this all up just to have it not go anywhere (:

I would also offer this, of course, to literate and illiterate writers. It might have a bit more success with those who aren't as literate as all of us, too.

It seems like a nice idea, and you do bring up valid points! But I'm just going to say something about the last line because it bothers me.... It's deceiving when a user posts a form that seems literate, only to turn out later that they are not. I've started 1x1s with people that seem to write really well, only to find out later that their form was a completely different story than their posts at all... I think forms should basically be at the same level of your writing, so as to not bring up any confusion...

@mercy: Yes, I sent you a PM! ^^

@ iridescent: I would be interested in a roleplay like that! XD & reading all this makes me scared that my own characters might be too perfect in others' eyes Dx I do try to make them flawed but.... Maybe in someone else's eyes, they would seem too perfect. Meh, this is a terrifying thought... XD

I hate seeing all these perfect charries out there. It annoy me to no end. The worst thing? When you create an out-of-the-norm character which is original and everyone decides to ignore them. For example, I had this really obnoxious know-it-all male that had the power of Knowledge which was really fun to roleplay because he abused coffee and caffeine to alternately slow or speed up his brain 'speed' and everyone thought he was a wack - which he was - and decided he was the one to pass out on since he was not perfect in character.

I was really annoyed. Oh well, I'll have to re-use him at some point.

I remember him! He was so interesting. If I remember correctly, that was the only RP where I played someone with below-average intelligence (which is a stretch from my usual characters). That made interacting with him very difficult, I mean, the know-it-all and the know-nothing. I wish that hadn't died. :(

Well said. It's not perfection, it's the generic thing. Hmm. It might be fun to play a character who thinks they are perfect (and has many of those traits), but is actually a horrible, arrogant human-being.

Any interest on the, er, experimental high-quality two-three liner RP?

@Aqua: I think it's a good idea, but I don't think anyone in this club would be interested, 'cause we're all control-freak writers here. ;) I've considered offering a writing store, where someone gives me the characters and a general plotline for a short story, and I write down their simplistic story as a higher-quality piece. I might actually be interested in buying from a store like that.
INSANELY BUSY!
I am moving! For the next month or so, I am going to be so very busy.
If I'm on here, it's because I'm unwinding with writing or pets or whatever.
Please do not add to my stress, if you can. Your support is appreciated.

I think that buying a plot would be okay, since I know that a lot of people know what they want out of a plot but they just can’t put it into the right words. However buying a character just seems like cheating to me. I just feel that if you can’t come up with your own character, then how do we know your coming up with your own writing? It just seems like a gateway to plagiarism to me. If you really want a good character work on it and ask for critique and work on it some more until you have something you like.

I would maybe want to do this, but not give any preferences on what type of character I'd want. Aka, have to roleplay a character some one else created. Just to see if I could actually do it. You could develop them, but not in a rush, actually take time and stick to what the person has created. Idk, just sounds kinda fun and challenging >u>

Am I the only one who thinks that would be an adventure worth taking? .u.
I lurk mostly. they/no pronouns.

Yes, totally! I would love to RP some original, creative character that someone else made. We could have, like, a character exchange. :3

Jessi was entirely baffled. She wanted to beat this girl into a puddle of blood and tissue looking for her Finnian, or to hug her and tell her that it would all be okay. She also wanted to just run. To rewind the last ten minutes of her life and never go through them again. She didn't want to come to this realization. She wanted to forget ever seeing him like this and have everything go back to normal. But none of that could happen. Even if she ran from it, she'd remember. There was no forgetting this.

It was one of those horrifying experiences that changes a person forever. Like walking in on your parents, or seeing a fellow soldier step on a land mine. It couldn't be washed away no matter how hard one tried, no matter how much bleach one poured into their eyes. She clenched her fists tightly, digging the short bits of nail that she had into her palms. She wanted to kill him. She really did. How could he do this to her? Why hadn't he told her at least? If he was gone, shouldn't she get time to mourn the loss of Finnian? "My 'Finny' wasn't... He wasn't... This! He never would have done something like this to me..."

The bracelet that she wore on her wrist hadn't come off unless it was necessary. Not since the day it was made. But now it seemed to burn at her skin, biting at her instead of soothing her. 'What would Finn do?', used to be her guiding and grounding thought, as crazy as he was. But now what did she have? He apparently turned himself inside out and became someone else. He ran away. How was that answer supposed to help her?

She ground her teeth together with a growl. She was angry, so angry. It was like her best friend committed suicide and didn't tell her goodbye. He was still partially here, but as a ghost of himself. He was now some stupid girl that she'd never even met. How could he do something like that and never tell her? He wasn't even just a drag queen, was he? It sure didn't look like it.

Seeing the tears in her eyes pulled Jessi back to reality. She'd always been the one to wipe away his tears and tell him it was okay. She had always, always been there. But here she stood on the other side of things. She was the one making him cry. How could she do that to him? She didn't know what to do. She couldn't very well hug him and kill him all at the same time. "Look, don't fckin cry. Come on. Don't do that..."

Sighing heavily she smacked herself in the face, effectively facepalming over everything. She as a person wasn't intentionally an ass on a regular basis, and hated making people cry. Not that she regretted being upset, because she still was. But she didn't want to hurt this girl, or boy, or whatever they were. "Fcking hell..." She stepped forward and lightly wrapped her arms around Finny. She didn't entirely want to, but she didn't want to leave her just crying either.

Hugging her just felt right. It was what she expected in a hug from her Finnian when she got home. And even though this wasn't exactly him, it wasn't exactly not either. "Hey, it's okay... Alright, it's fine... Just chill... I'm sorry..." She tightened her grip with one arm, and used the other to rub her back, trying to get her to relax. Granted she still wanted to strangle her a bit for doing this, but it was barely a concern compared to making her feel better.

Any semi-lit/lit RPs you have: None that are currently active at the moment...
