Zoey gave her brother, Max, a quick hug before letting him get into line for the Reaping. "Good luck, Zo!" he called quietly, his eyes full of fearful, unshed tears. As Zoey got in line, some of the careers sneered at her, growling insults and laughing gruffly at each others dirty jokes and insinuations. Her dark brown skin and black hair put her apart from her lighter compatriots. Not only that, but she was girl as well. Which made her a perfect target for tricks and curses. Fools. she thought, smiling grimly. You'd think they would learn, after I broke Trenton's finger when he flashed it at me. "Welcome to the seventy-sixth hunger games!" Said district ten's disgustingly cheerful escort, Honey Smith. "All of Panem is watching and waiting, so let's get started!" She reached into the glass ball and as she fished out a name, she saw many of the eligible children and their parents bow their heads and pray it was not theirs. Zoey kept her head held high, and, she saw proudly, so did her brother. "Zoey Chandler!" called Honey, and Zoey heard a shriek from the boy's line. "No, Zoey!" Max cannoned into her and gripped her in a tight hug, tears wetting her green tunic. "It's alright, Max. It'll be okay. I promise." The peacekeepers were here now, dragging him away, and he was yelling at them. "Leave me alone! Leave her alone! Zoey! Zoey!" One of the tall, brawny men brought out a whip, and he was instantly silent. His will to survive overrode his love for her, although he still trembled and a few tears ran down his cheeks. The peacekeepers surrounded her, and she was borne away in a midst of swirling colors, sounds, and emotions.
Then it was time, the hour during which she was permitted to say her goodbyes to family and friends. Almost before the doorman finished announcing that she had sixty minutes to talk, Max nearly bowled him over as he ran to her. He didn't say anything for almost fifteen minutes, just hugged her like he was never going to let go. When he finally did, his eyes were red from crying. Zoey took the hem of her shirt and carefully wiped away the tears. "Don't worry, Max, I'll come home. I'll be back. I promise." But they both knew she wouldn't be coming back. She had no chance, against the bigger and more powerful careers. But the words sparked a flash of hope in her brother's face, so she knew she would have to try. He opened his hand, and showed her a small rose-shaped pin. It was delicately carved from a smooth piece of dark wood, and he smiled when she took it carefully from him. "It's beautiful, Max! Did you carve it yourself?" Max nodded, a small blush showing up on his dark skin. "I've been working on it for a while. It was going to be your birthday present this year, since it wasn't finished last year. I- I want you to wear it into the ring, as your district token."
