Affliction and Dolcementepart one .
We remain on the streambank in silence for a while, just watching each other. It has been so long since I have been this close to another living creature of any species, and it's definitely nerve-wracking for me. I'm not sure what to do. I stare into her eyes, like a pair of perfectly sculpted ice cubes stuck in the centre of her face, boring into me. My gaze moves down her thick, dusty-brown coat. I examine the intricate patterns like carvings in a cave wall, the feathers braided in along her spine as if she were some sort of goddess of the sky. She is such a soft, delicate little thing, so dainty and helpless.
And I can't help but wonder, what does she see when she looks at me ? The deadly ice shards that make up my pelt, poised like the quills on a porcupine, prepared to strike at any provocation, or without any reason at all. The jagged streaks of frigid blue that cling to my back, the only solid part of my body, like thin chunks of frozen armour along my spine and ribs. Does a wave of fear wash over her when she looks into my intense, pupilless turquoise eyes ? Does a shiver of intuition crawl down her spine when she leans sideways to get a better look at the long, thin spears that are my tail ? And the sound when I move, the distinct clatter of glass against glass, the sound ice makes against itself, does it strike her nerves with an uncomfortable chill ?
"What's it like?" She blurts out. I flinch, not prepared for her sudden burst, and she blushes, lowering her head and flattening her ears against her skull. She continues in a meek voice. "Sorry, Flic. The ... your fur, I mean. What's it ... feel like ?"
I swallow, sitting back on my haunches. The gears turn in my mind as I look down at myself. "Cold," I murmur, finding no better description.
She smiles wide, and manages to subdue a laugh. "You're funny." She takes a step closer to me, then pauses, looking up to check if this is okay with me. Dolce leans closer, peering at my chest, wanting a better idea of how my body is built, of what it is that's so dangerous and shamed by the others of her village.
"Careful," I remind her automatically, stiffening all my muscles so I don't jerk too close by accident. Her shadowed muzzle is just inches from me now, studying the frozen spikes that cover my skin. It worries me slightly. What if the fur on her face isn't thick enough to protect her from my lethal fur ? Still lost in her captivation, she looks up at me, and asks lightly, "Can I ... touch them ?"
I set my mouth into a thin line. It's already been proven safe, but ... I just couldn't bear hurting someone again, the way I used to. With a heavy sigh, I finally nod. "Just ... be careful. I don't want to burn you."
Taking a deep breath, Dolce stands, and pads close to me, standing just beside me. Even more vigilant than before, she reaches out, slowly resting it against my shoulder, just enough that the tips of my fur make contact with her toes. She tentatively brushes her paw down my forearm, making full contact, even touching my skin at one point. I gasp at the strange new sensation, and she jerks away, taking a few steps back, making herself look very small.
"Ah, sorry, I'm sorry," I whisper, still trying to collect myself. "That just felt so ... so incredibly odd. Are you hurt ?"
"No, no it's just ... cold. Like goosebumps."
I furrow my brow. Goosebumps ? I've never heard the term, but I decide not to ask. Our experiences together are awkward enough.
Dolce sits back down, appraising her paw. Where her fur touched mine, it stands up on end, similar to how one's hackles would raise. Then, her bright glacial eyes snap back up at me. "What did it feel like ?"
Ah, right, my arm... I look down at it, as the sensation begins to fade. "I .. I don't know how to describe it ... I feel ... it's ... warm, I think. Prickly, like being stuck by pine needles ... I've never felt anything like that before."
She smiles at me. "Those are called goosebumps, Flic," she informs me. Embarrassed, I blush, feeling incredibly stupid, then feeling incredibly shy. "What is it ?" she asks, a sweet smile on her face.
I cast my eyes down, feeling the redness in my face. "It felt nice."-----
