Alex: I see Zoey across the hallway and sigh. She’s popular, with adoring sidekicks and jockeys running after her, where as I’m the year weirdo, with my blue and green fur. I watch her, leaning on my locker, trying to look as small as possible, so Jack and his gang don’t spot me. I can only deal with one head dunking in a toilet a day. She is so beautiful, with strangely appealing different coloured eyes, and a gold ruffled collar. Whenever I see her silky fur I just wanted to reach out and touch it, to stroke her face and know that she loves me back. But she doesn’t, and probably never will. And if Jack catches me going anywhere near his girlfriend, I would be worse off than road kill. So, with that depressing thought, I turn and walk to my next class, with ten minutes to go before the bell rings.
Zoey: I notice Alex staring at me again. I have to be certain to look at him when no one else was looking, because if anyone else has even a tiny clue of how I feel about him and his gorgeous green and blue fur, I’d immediately sink to the lowest of the low. All of my popularity, everything I had worked for, over the whole of my school life; always looking my best, flirting with the right guys, doing well in class, but not well enough that it was noticed... it would all be gone. I sigh when I see him leave, and watch him until he turns the corner. In fact, I’m so busy concentrating on Alex that I don’t hear Jack sneaking up on me, or feel his tug on the ivy wrapped around my tail. I don’t notice him until he whispers in my ear, ‘Hey Zoey, babe.’ I jump around, panicking, ‘oh, h-h-hey Jack,’ he puts a paw on my shoulder, his touch makes me want to retch. ‘Is that loser Alex bothering you? Because I can sort him out soon enough,’ I give him a kiss to distract him, ‘No, he wasn’t,’ I laugh nervously, ‘I was just looking for Libby,’ Libby is my best friend, the only one who knows of my feelings for Alex. I quickly spot her chatting up a teacher, who is looking red and flustered. I scamper up to her, and pull her away from the disappointed looking English teacher, ‘Jack, 6 o’clock. Can you get rid of him?’ I ask quietly. Libby looks at me calmly, ‘Sure honey.’ She walks up to Jack calmly, who is starting to take a step towards me. Libby quickly distracts him with a, ‘So, Jack. How’s rugby training going? I hear you’re taking up football as well?’ which leaves me with enough time to escape to my next lesson.
PROM NIGHT
Alex: Yeah, it’s prom night. Not surprisingly, I haven’t got a date. There’s a clear division on the dance floor, geeks and freaks on one side, jockeys and popular girls on the other. Of course, Zoey looks amazing, in a purple lilac dress, with white lace gloves. I doubt Zoey could look terrible if she tried. I notice the looks I am getting from the other freaks on my side. My tuxedo and white rose in one pocket far outshines their shirts and jeans, with braces holding them up. Great, now I am a freak amongst freaks. This night is the worst night of my life.
Zoey: I dance distractedly with Jack. I can see Alex on the other side of the hall, looking amazing. And I can see the way that everyone else sees him, some weirdo trying to look cool. I sigh loudly, and Jack notices, ‘Babe, what’s the matter? Something up? This is the best night of our lives, remember?’ He sniggers obnoxiously, then notices some of his cronies holding up a white envelope, exactly like the ones they have the prom king and queen names in. Jack pulls away, ‘Sweetie, I gotta run, my pals want me. But don’t worry about getting your little self bored, I have some entertainment planned for later,’ He runs off towards the front, hooting with laughter. I feel myself sag with relief, and make me way over to the side of the dance floor, where I blatantly ignore the dozens of guys trying to get my attention desperately. The only guy’s attention I want is Alex’s, and he’s on the other side of the hall. I don’t even know why Jack’s my boyfriend, I suppose it used to be just another rung on the ladder of popularity. Sometimes, I make myself feel sick. Suddenly I see the headmaster stand up to the microphone at the front. I notice Jack skulking at the edge of the hall, a white envelope clutched in his hand, but I swear he’d switched it a few moments ago... I stand up with a heavy heart, I know who the victim of his most despicable prank yet was, and it breaks my heart. The headmaster read out of the first envelope, ‘ZOEY HEARTLAKE,’ I make my way up to the front of the hall slowly and feel the crown being placed on the top of my head. Then I wait for the humiliation for a certain someone to come, and it hurts so badly.
Alex: I hear Zoey’s name being called out, it isn’t surprising. I see the beautiful crown being placed on her head, but then I see the expression on her face and suddenly I know what is to come. I bow my head, and wait for the shame. ‘ALEX MORTLAND,’ the headmaster booms, and the hall is silent. I make my way up to the front of the hall, and feel the crown hover above my head, before it is snatched away by Jack, who plonks it upon his own head. ‘I have the REAL results for prom king here,’ he boasts, ‘And it’s me,’ I know what false accusation he’d throw at me next, and I’m not wrong. ‘This dog is a cheat!’ Jack shouts triumphantly, waving a finger in my face. Then the hall is deathly still, and Zoey steps forwards, her face pale with pure rage.
Zoey: I hear Alex’s name called, see all that Jack did, and feel something brew within me. I step forwards, no longer caring about popularity, and spit in Jack’s face. ‘You disgust me,’ I say coldly, and take Alex in my arms. ‘You’re MY prom king,’ I declare loudly and proudly, and kiss him passionately. Then I heard the hall erupt with applause.
Alex: I hear the claps and cheers for Zoey, and... and... me! I feel her soft lips on mine, and kiss back. I see Jack’s expression of shock. I change my mind. This is the best night of my life.
