He has a few issues that need to be worked out before I can "do" anything with him. I'm his 4th home, and in at least the most recent one he was being terrorized by his owners. Stuff like alpha rolls, heavy prong and electric collar use, and even putting a choke chain ON HIS FACE which caused him to react and eventually after being shocked one day he tagged his owner's hand. He MUST MUST MUST be +R only, no wiggle room because he has passed the point that he's willing to forgive overcorrections.
Thats just awful.

Its a good way to completely ruin a perfectly good dog. Hopefully he can make a come back if you show him how fun and exciting training can be. <3
I can't remember.. but do you use a clicker? I know I recommend them for pretty much EVERYONE, but in this case I'm overly recommending one. I think the free shaping excersizing and clicker games could do him a world of good. Teach him that critical thinking skills are great and to be encouraged. It sounds like his previously home really.. surpressed him. Such a shame because they are such smart dogs!
Honey, it's in the stars
And you're my everything from here to Mars
And every word I say I truly mean
Dear darling, I hope I'm being clear
'Cause there's no one like you on earth
That can be my universe

Just curious, what got you into dobies?
I had GSDs all my life and ALWAYS liked the black&tan dogs. For some reason rotties never did it for me but I really really wanted a doberman. This past summer I got serious about it, joined a forum, and started learning everything I could :]

I'm tempted to do a complete overhaul. New name, new food, new training. This boy needs to learn that humans are not scary and that loving me is a positive thing D:
I said it to Link in private but I'll say it here too. I'll be honest. I hate clickers. They're clunky and an extra step in the process and they frustrate me to no end. That said, I will be using a clicker for him. He needs to start back at square 1 and learn that the scary human is here to help, not hurt.

Eeeee! Scheduling the home visit now, asked off of work on the 15th. His crate, a temp collar, the clicker, a jacket, and a few kongs are in the mail. I also just picked up a few basic toys and a couple knuckle bones, looking into a honky hedgehog and some antlers and then aside from food I'll be done shopping for now. Eventually I'll want to get him a customized collar and winter coat, but those require measurements.
Also getting a no pull harness and a muzzle. The muzzle would be for trips to the vet and for backup as he was afraid of the one vet at the clinic. She's reported to look like one of the owners, so I'm hopinh he'll be good for my vet but I also like protecting her hands.
I'm currently scheduling the home visit for this weekend. Final hurdle guys

If she doesn't, she'll be hearing it from me and probably Link xD
Jazi, I bet you're dieing of anticipation!

How come you're getting a no-pull harness instead of a head halter? Is he head shy or did a previous owner ruin head halters for him?

No need to twist my arm, trust me I'll keep everyone updated both here and in my dober forum :]
Sara, no-pull harness because he redirects after corrections and dogs must be conditioned to the halti, plus until he's conditioned to the halti I don't want him dashing and hurting his neck... especially not in a breed so at risk for Wobblers. I have several iterations of haltis, the harness would just be for in the mean time :]
Home check is tomorrow at 11-12! Wish me luck everyone~

I'm wishing you luck!!!! I have no idea what timezone your in though, so i don't know when the check will be... *sigh* >.<
Oh well! I'll just have to sit here and keep logging on to wait for the update!!! Eeeek! I'm so excited for you!! Dobies and Great danes have to be my two favourite breeds, so I think you've chosen one of the best breeds

Rotties never did it for me either, and I think that's probably because I like taller, slimmer breeds maybe? anyway, just an extra 'eek' for you!
