Summer lovin' is in full swing as a group of teenagers, all with their own interests, problems, and backstories fall in love, make friends or make enemies. Slater Sykes and his brother Shayley live with their father and are still shaken by the death of their brother Kyle from years earlier. Slater develops severe depression, and almost kills himself before he meets Raven Marchetti, who also deals with a death in the family: her father. Slater made a lot of mistakes in the past, from stealing, drug possession to violence, he even abused his ex. He makes one more mistake: sleeping with another girl while with Raven. And not just any girl, his friend Maverick's girlfriend, Mackenzie. This makes a rift in their friendship that makes band practice very awkward and strained. Raven breaks up with him immediately. Slater, for the first time since Kyle died, is truly heartbroken. He realizes that Raven is the love of his life and he wants to change his ways so he can be with her. So he apologizes in song from and wins her heart back in front of his entire school. Slater wants his family to meet his girlfriend and the perfect oppurtunity is when his cousins Destery and Hayley Quinn have a family gathering. Hayley has the same idea, and invites over her boyfriend. Unluckily Hayley's new boyfriend, Alex Hawthorne, turns out to be Raven's ex. Yikes! is right. The tensions rise and soon Slater and Alex are fighting, bringing the festivities to a standstill. Hayley is distraught while Destery thinks the whole thing is a joke and records it. Slater gets in trouble again when his dad finds out that Raven is pregnant, and not just that--with twins! Unfortunately, his father isn't having any of it and throws him out, again, swearing he was going to call Raven's mom and force her to have an abortion. Slater hurries over to Raven's house before he can, hoping that if he and Raven tell her before his father does, she won't be as upset.
Meanwhile, the Marchetti family offers up another pretty daughter to the Sykes: Kayleigh. She and Shayley are both kind, considerate and somewhat shy people, they get along easily and have a romantic first kiss in the rain. Kayleigh's sister, Pheonix, ruins the moment by bringing up the topic of them sleeping together. Neither one is ready for the next step and Shayley has a painful memory from his past come surging back. In middle school a girl who didn't like shy guys had given him a chance and it went disastrously. She didn't understand his anxiety and got angry when it got in the way, calling him weak and "not a real man". Shayley has a panic attack, worrying that Kayleigh would be ready for the next step and he wouldn't and the same thing would happen again.
School starts, and more people meet each other, making the web of connections between peers even tighter. Riptide, a member of Slater's band, meets a student from England in a very unexpected place. Gabe and Cameron hit it off quickly and a relationship seems on the way. Zero meets Lilly, who might just be the girl he needs after the tragic death of his girlfriend by cancer a year before.
But the school year brings its stressors with it, and for some, this along with other factors proves to be too much, and they end up in an mental ward at North Pine hospital. Here they can meet other people going through hard times as well and work to find ways to manage their lives healthily.
