When you start feeling that you're not taking care of them as well as you should... That is when you have too many.
As for the single species... I don't think I'd set a limit. It's as many as I want there to be. After all, it's the design I love, not the species it belongs to.

No. Never.
I've bought characters I have felt a certain connection with, but never bought a character I didn't have that with.

I'm sure I'm not the only one but I can't answer that properly.
My taste in characters is rather random... Sure there are some things I really don't like... Too many accessories, clashing colours... But it's really about the way I feel when I see a character, so it could be anything.

I'd say 100+ is too many, at that point it's time to cut back. I don't mind how many characters of a single species a person has.

Wild canines and big cats, black/white/grey/brown base, blue/red/purple/white/black/rainbow/bright green markings, Semi natural design patterns.

But, like Sola said, if you can no longer take care of them/have no plans for them then that's too many. ;u;
I have plans for all my characters and I will try to give them all one piece of art by myself.

I love teal/turquoise and/or gold characters. ;u; *mustdesignone*
I typically tend to like humanoids and canines. x3 Especially shapeshifters. <3 I also love Pokemon characters too. xD

This might be helpful, but what I'm doing, with my new character website, is making a page for a character, filling out their bio and then moving on to the next character. xD
I haven't even started on that yet.
