Your choice is your choice. The point of this thread is pet education, not to make people feel bad about what they're feeding. If you have educated yourself on the matter at hand, weighted the pros and cons, and still find S/D a great food.. Awesome, good for you.

I will say this though: Just because its recommended by a vet does not make it any better than any other food. Vets are humans and therefore limited by education and experiences. Some vets completely reject S/D, while others worship it. Its up to you, the pet owner, to make your own decision after proper research.

While on the topic of S/D, many vets have very little official nutrition education. In most institutes the nutrition courses are paid off by Science Diet, or Purina, or IAMs. Its rather screwed up because the national vet association have done studies on the affects of BHT and BHA and their finding showed that at worst these two chemicals sped up the formation and growth of tumors, often cancerous, and at best they simply promoted tumor growth. Guess who's a big supporter of Science Diet, which contains BHT and BHA?

It depends on the education and experiences. My dad is the vet. He has been to every school across Canada doing vet school. As he wants to be good. He now in China helping with the panda's. I think my dad has a idea of what it good for my dog. Also if you want to know something. The Science Diet we feed him is our brand? I know their is a brand of dog food called that ,but me and my dad make home made dog food. The reason we call it science diet is because we just read a bag and liked the name. So we called it that. I know we can be sued by the company, but we will change then. Thanks for the advise and It was taken in and heard loud and clear. We were just talking about two different dog foods. The Royal Medical is actually that is made in Fort Nelsom. It has meat of elk and other stuff.

Er. Not to butt in but... exotics knowledge =/= dog knowledge. He could very well be an exotics vet but that doesn't mean he's trained in dogs let alone dog nutrition. Likewise my dog&cat vet knows quite a bit about dogs and cats but nothing about snakes and pandas. "Vet" doesn't mean specialized knowledge in one area, it means "animal doctor". I wouldn't go to an ears nose and throat doctor if I broke my foot any more than I'd ask a general doc about my nutrition plan.

-facepalm-
When you mention SCIENCE DIET, you know we are going to think of the brand, right? And the brand Science Diet is icky. Why don't you just say 'homemade dog food'?

Anyways, we'll probably get the Blue brand when the current bag of food starts running lows.

My dogs don't even eat Kibble. For one thing, they are too spoiled. We have fed them wet food and fresh food since they really were puppies... and so, after tasting good stuff for months and months, they won't even touch kibble.

I feed them things like Freshpet Select, and since they are in my area.. I go and shop at justfoodfordogs, since you know the food is fresh, with real ingredients, no preservatives. Sure its costly, But better than risking feeding them stuff with chemicals in them.

-quit for the most part, though i log on occasionally.

 My dog eats Pedigree! Because that's the only dog kibble available in the market. and my parents aren't the least bit willing to give her raw meat :( probably if I make my mom read this...

That kind of looks like Canidea... >_>

Whats the protien and fat levels looks like? Now-a-days I'm way more concerned about actual protein then OMG THERES A GRAIN IN IT! I mean, don't get me wrong.. I'm still in huge favor of grain-free foods. xD

Anyways, I really like to see atleast 30% protein for most dogs, unless your dog does do better on more carb heavy foods. =) BUT it certainly doesn't look like a bad food and is certainly a step in the right direction.

Merrick ;]

Crude Protein (Not Less Than) 24.0%
Crude Fat (Not Less Than) 12.0%
Crude Fiber (Not More Than) 3.0%
Moisture (Not More Than) 11.0%

So not quite at 24%. I was thinking I'd do EVO but their protien is at 42% and I don't want any complications from that.

I used to be worried about really high protien as well.. Not so much anymore but I completely understand your worry! ^^;

Have you considered Natures Variety Raw Boost? From what I've seen its as readily available as EVO and a bit cheaper. Protien isn't extraordinarily high, nor very low. I think its like.. 35%-36% depending on formula.

Duck Meal, Turkey Meal, Salmon Meal, Tapioca, Canola Oil (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid), Pumpkinseeds, Tomato Pomace, Herring Meal, Sun-Cured Alfalfa Meal, Natural Duck Flavor, Montmorillonite Clay, Freeze Dried Duck (including Freeze Dried Ground Duck Bone), Freeze Dried Turkey, Freeze Dried Turkey Liver, Freeze Dried Turkey Heart, Vitamins, Fruits and veg

My dog goes freaking GAGA over this one, its Duck and Turkey. I've never seen her go crazier and her coat was the absolute nicest on this food as well. =)
