Maybe you could take suggestions, pick the best ones, and then have a vote?
And then everyone could come up with their own characters, but have a set main character as well.

the point of these sorts of exercises is to make up things on the spot.
not everyone is going to like the plot
because "x" amount of people will have "x" many ideas.
not everyone is going to like it but it's fun to see how it develops
just do like "a best friend has died and the main character must go on with their lives" or something.

Agreed. Have like a basic plot to follow, and everyone contributes to get to that eventually.
