Sample One;;Vanadium's silence was abruptly interrupted when the sound of another dog reached her ears. Apparently, she wasn't the only one crazy enough to be out this late with absolutely nothing to do. Sure, she could have woken up one of her siblings, or maybe even Ace just to talk, but Vanad wasn't one to annoy people when she herself didn't enjoy it. "Do unto others as you would do to yourself" Was what their mother Mora, had told them continuously, and it was true.
But her thoughts were short lived when the stranger approached where she stood, his voice flowing through the still air to her ears.
“Such a place! Empty, yet it reeks of soiled liiiiife.”
His words made her shiver. He was both right and... different. The way he spoke reminded Vanad of the refined lives some used to live before the outbreak. Not that she would have seen those times, though. Her mother had told her, being the old dog she was. Vanad contemplated sneaking away, for surely he was unable to see her, as she was to see him, but decided against it, and took the sociable way instead.
"True words, friend." Vanadium mumbled, not softly, but neither loudly. She started padded carefully towards the voice that had interrupted her peace. She now smelled him, stopping only a few feet away, trying to find a sliver of light so as not to alarm him with her sudden presence. "It sure puts a damper on life when you smell such soiled joy, eh?" She sighed, sniffing the air carefully.
Sample Two;;Anyone that knew Yttrium would know that she was heartless. Few could weasel passed the cold layer of her heart to find the warmth. Her sister was cold too, but that was a different kind of cold. Vanadium was... a loner, you could say. She could live perfectly fine without another dog in her life. Sure, she might miss someone, but she could probably last longer than Yttrium. Ytrri needed others. Not that she liked them. Well, she did, depending on the dog, but, she needed to be surrounded by dogs. Especially the males that drooled over her and told her how pretty she was. She knew she was, even without anyone telling her it.
Somewhere underneath all that though, Yttrium did have a heart. One that showed once a blue moon.
But now, the Collie x Catahoula mix made her way through the corridors of the abandoned hospital, her bright blue and brown eyes searching. Sure, Ytrri was somewhat of a priss, but she couldn't help but love adventures, like every one of her siblings. She'd heard rumors of ghosts and wanted to see one. Badly. Yttri wasn't very superstitious, and didn't know whether to believe in ghosts, but either way, she didn't want to pass up the opportunity.
Opening one of the doors by pushing it with her nose, she entered a long room with many windows, some boarded up, others broken open. The walls were burnt and filthy, water stains layering the scorch marks, mold growing on top. Padding into the poor, the dark blue and white dog looked around, her eyes searching. The room was empty. Nothing against the walls, no other doors, just bare. How dull.
But before Yttri could turn around and leave, the door slammed behind her, sending her jumping in surprise. Whipping around, Yttri's eyes darted around. Who had closed that? Lifting her ears curiously, Yttri tried to find the noise of claws on the floor, or maybe the swishing of fur. Surely some dog was playing a trick on her? What she heard, instead, sent shivers down her spine. Whispery chuckles started to fill the room, echoing off the bare walls. It began softly but grew.
Yttri's eyes widened, fear pumping her heart nervously. The laughter suddenly stopped, replaced by a single whisper: "Can you see us?" Suddenly, a fog appeared in front of her. First foggy, but it quickly began to clear up. Floating in front of her was a middle aged woman. At least that's what Yttri thought she was. Half of her face was skeleton, the other side burned to a crisp. She smiled at Ytrri. A cold, deadly smile that filled Yttri with dread.
She'd had enough. Running right through the ghost, a blast of cold sending thousands of shivers down her spine, Yttri made it to the door and got on her back legs, whimpering. "Help me!" She yowled, scratching at the door with her claws, "Anybody!" She didn't know whether the ghost was right behind her or had left. Yttri didn't care. She wanted out. Now.
