Chapter One

It's not easy, moving to a new place. It wasn't easy for Aella. It wasn't that she missed her friends - she didn't have any - or her school - everyone thought she was wierd. She just liked her home. Now she'd be going to a new house, new town, new school with new kids to look at the "new girl" and gossip about her extreme wierdness.
Aella stared out the window, her head pressed against the cold glass. Her tail absent-mindedly flicked to and fro over the little black dragon at her side. The car drove through the town and finally pulled up in a driveway of an old house at the edge of the town. Aella jumped out and ran into the backyard - she had spied some trees from the driveway. It was glorious! A huge forest was right behind their tiny backyard! Aella loved forests, and they loved her because she loved them.
Aella got settled into her new home quickly - very quickly for a wolf who hated change. She liked the old, mysteriousness of her house. It creaked and groaned when she climbed the wooden stairs, its corners were webbed with ancient cobwebs, dust had settled on all the surfaces... It was wonderful! Aella had a huge room with a lovely, mahogany bed - "Fit for a princess," her father remarked. It was dark brown and had tall posts on each corner. Over these posts was draped a beautiful, crimson, sheer fabric that matched the color of her satin sheets and pillowcases.
Luckily for Aella, it was the end of summer, so she had some time to get used to the place before having to go to school. This she was grateful for. Her mom said it was nice because she could go out, socialize, and make some friends before going to school so she'd know some of the animals there - but Aella stayed at home the whole time, the last three weeks of summer. She didn't dare go out and "socialize". She really didn't mind - in truth, liked - actually loved her wierdness, but she hated it when the whole school laughed at her because of how different she was. This school would be shocked for the first day, and then laughing at her the rest of her life. It would be just like it was at her last school, and the one before it. At least she'd become sort of "old news" at the last school and they only laughed at her a little when passing by her in the halls. Which is why Aella was shocked when the school's reaction waas so different from her expectation.
When she walked into her first class and sat down, everyone turned to look at her. But they didn't look surprised or shocked in the least. Instead they all rolled their eyes, stated loudly that there was "another one of them in the school", and began laughing and making fun of her. Aella sighed and turned to listen to the funny-looking teacher, who was rambling on about the importance of learning science and what its uses were.
At lunch, she sat down at a tiny table in the corner, alone. She was eating her lunch and spacing out every now and then when she heard a voice behind her.
"Hello there," the kind, feminine voice said. Aella turned to see a "sparkly" blue and black dog with a black dress, pearl necklace, and pendant-crown. She swallowed her bite of sandwich and returned her greeting.
"Hi," she said rather quickly and quietly, still looking up at the dog.
"I'm Aemer," the dog smiled. "What's your name?"
"Uh, I'm Aella," Aella replied. She paused for a moment, then continued. "Why, exactly, are you talking to me? Did some popular snob put you up to this?" Aemer looked confused for a moment.
"Oh, no, of course not," she grinned. "I'm just talking to you because, well, you're... Different."
"Yeah, so I am," Aella nodded carefully. "Your point is?"
"You might be one of us," Aemer told her, gesturing to herself and five wolves at another table.
"What exactly does that mean?" Aella inquired.
"You might be a..." Aemer began carefully. "A kind of..."
"A kind of what?" Aella demanded. "Spit it out!"
"Calm down and be patient, please," Aemer muttered. "You might be a sort of kind of... Fairy. Of sorts."
"Fairy?" Aella shrieked quietly. "Of sorts? Now what exactly do you mean?"
"Just, um, meet me in the little garden behind school," Aemer instructed, scratching the back of her head in thought. "After school, you know, around 3:30. Fallon will explain it. And if she can't, you'll have to meet us in the forest sometime so we can all explain it to you."
"Fallon?" Aella asked. "Explain? Forest? All explain it to me? I'm confused!"
"Just meet Fallon and I in the school garden!" Aemer exclaimed in exasperation, turning and walking back to her table to talk to her group of friends. Aella watched them for a moment, noticing their gestures and glances towards her and catching a few words - "You sure about her?" - "...Atana...spell...magic?" - "Parax, don't...her out...freakiness."
She shook her head in confusion. She wasn't sure who they were, what they wanted, what they were, and if it was a good idea to meet them in the school garden or not.

Chapter Two

After school was over, Aella began walking towards her house. As she glanced behind her at the flowers along the path while she waited for the light to change so she could cross the road, she remembered that Aemer had wanted to meet her in the school garden. Aella thought for a few second, then turned and ran back to the school, following the path to the garden behind it. Aemer and a strange wolf - "She must be Fallon," Aella thought - were waiting rather impatiently for her.
"You're Aella?" the wolf that Aella supposed to be Fallon inquired.
"Yeah," Aella confirmed, nodding. "And you're Fallon?" The wolf nodded. She sat down, curling her tail around her. Aella glanced[ at her tail, then back to her face, then suddenly back to her tail again. Originally, Aella hadn't noticed much about the six in Aemer's group - including Aemer - that was very different from normals wolves and dogs. But now that she was up close, she saw that Fallon's tail was long and plumy - and soft, she noticed as the tip, waving about, grazed her leg.
"So what exactly was Aemer talking about when she said 'fairy of sorts'?" Aella demanded.
"There are some dogs and wolves - mostly wolves - that are... Different, from normal ones," Fallon began.
"Like I haven't noticed," Aella interupted sarcastically with a roll of her eyes, gesturing to all of her strange features. Her dragon poked his head out of her backpack, then pulled it back in before Fallon and Aemer saw him.
"Yes, I know," Fallon continued. "Anyways, these wolves - I'll just say 'wolves' instead of 'wolves and dogs' since it's easier that way - have special... Abilities. You know. Powers. Whatever you call them. They are called 'fairies'. Or, at least, that's what we call ourselves. We're not just your normal fairies, of course, tiny wolves with wings and magic wands. So that's why Aemer said we're a kind of sort of fairy. Because we're fairies, but not your normal sort of fairy." Aella was quiet for a moment.
"And why do you think I'm one?" she asked.
"Because of your... Special features," Aemer said. "Well, not all fairies have these obvious 'deformities', as the normal wolves call them, but it's obvious to other fairies that they're fairies. They have a sort of 'aura' of fairiness around them."
"That sounds like something Atana would say," Fallon laughed - a short but amused laugh. "That last part about the 'aura'."
"Yeah, it does!" Aemer laughed. "Oh, save me, Fallon! I'm turning into Atana!"
"And that would be a bad thing, Aemer the Scared-Of-Becoming-Atana Fae-Dog?" a charming, silvery voice rang out from behind Aella, who whirled around to see a blue wolf with a black-and-purple dress who was grinning.
"Oh, uh, um, hi Atana!" Aemer grinned with a mock "trying-to-hide-what-she-just-said" tone and expression. "We were just talking about you!"
"Yeah, so I heard," Atana said with such a serious and slightly angry voice and look on her face that it took Aella a moment to realize that she, too, was playing around. "'Oh, save me, Fallon! I'm turning into Atana!'" The mocking voice and expression were so funny that Aella almost choked trying to hold back her laughter.
"Careful there, Atana!" Fallon joked. "You don't want to kill our new recruit!" Atana burst out laughing for a moment, then walked up to Aella.
"'ello, and welcome to the club!" she grinned widely, holding out her paw. "I'm 'tana, the ever-so-amazing-and-awesome leader of the crazy rebellion!" Aella's eye twitched, then she burst into an explosive volley laughter, stumbled forward, and knocked Atana over, who immediatly began laughing along with her.
"I swear, they've got to be twins," Fallon grinned, shaking her head in amusement. "But really, you two, get up. We still have to find out if Aella here actually wants to be a part of the, ahem, 'club' of the 'crazy rebellion' that ''tana' leads so amazingly."
"So I take it that it's not a club, not a crazy rebellion, and Atana doesn't lead it?" Aella guessed after she and Atana had gotten to their feet and regained their seriousness.
"Yes, yes and - need I say more yesses?" Fallon affirmed with a smile. "There are six of us, not including you, Aella. We're all very different from normal wolves. Some of us have obvious and/or visible differences, others, not so much. For example, I've got the big tail, Aemer's only got red eyes. Atana's got... Well, the jewel-thing on top of her head, for one, and then there's her crazy personality... Gee, I don't know if I can find an opposite for her. She's just... Atana. That's what." Atana gave everyone a big, crazy grin, along with a creepy "Doideedeedeedoidydoodeedum" sort of noise.
"You disturb me," Aemer said disgustedly, shaking her head and playfully glaring at Atana.
"So, are you going to be a part of the Circle of Fairies, or are you not?" Fallon asked Aella in a serious voice.
"I, um, I guess I, I think I'll..." Aella hesitated. She took a deep breath and said, "I guess I'll join you."

Chapter Three

Ring ring ring! Ring ring ring! RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!!!!!! Aella flew up out of bed and hit her head on the ceiling at the last ear-splitting ring.
"I'm comin', I'm comin'!" she muttered under her breath. "What time is it, though?" She glanced at her clock. The bright red numbers announced the early time of 3:42 AM. Aella yawned and stopped the bell's ringing. She opened her window and glided down to the grassy ground of her backyard. She silently crept into the forest, following the worn pathway. After a few minutes she left the main path to follow a narrow, less-worn pathway. She stopped, looked around behind her, and hopped off to the side towards a tree, which she promptly disappeared into.
"Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee!" she squealed as she slid down a curved tunnel, going down, down, down under the ground. As she left the tunnel, she leapt up lightly into the air and alighted gently on the ground.
"Good, you're here," Fallon said grimly.
"Yay!" Atana yelped. "Now you'll tell us why we're here!"
"Hold your horses," Fallon growled.
"What's going on?" Aella inquired curiously.
"We - I mean I - am not exactly sure," Fallon admitted. "But it could be something serious."
"Serious?" the six others demanded in one voice.
"There's a new wolf that's just moved into town," Fallon began. "We haven't seen her in school yet because she got here Saturday and today - well, yesterday, since it's early in the morning - was Sunday. I'm afraid -"
"What's she look like?" Aemer inquired. "Sorry to interrupt, but if this could be something serious as in her being dangerous, I think new should know."
"She's black with blue eyes and has a white paw," Fallon said. "Sh-"
"Wait, that's it?" Aemer asked, puzzled. "That's all there is to her description?"
"I wasn't done yet. She wears a black cloak that covers all of her except her face and white paw. She has black wings and carries an eerie-looking blue-ish lantern."
"So, what makes you suspect her of whatever-it-is you suspect her of?" Fae inquired, cocking her head to the side.
"I get an uneasy feeling every time I come near her," Fallon shuddered. "And her eyes are so, so - I can't find the words to describe them. They're sort of creepy. You can't get them out of your head. They're-"
"Haunting." The voice that interrupted was cold and clear, like the moonlight from a full moon, or the icy glow of the stars.
"Yes, Aella, that's it," Fallon murmured. "How'd you guess?"
"I saw her, too," Aella replied. "I passed by her on the sidewalk yesterday as I was coming home from some errands."
"Did you feel that uneasy feeling, too?"
"No. But I felt... Cold. As if she were radiating a sort of cold-ness, a chill, a frost, something like that. Her eyes... She looked right at me and I felt like she was looking right into my soul. That made me feel uneasy, but I didn't feel any uneasy-ness from anything but that."
"Interesting," Fallon mused. "Anyways, I have heard legends and myths about evil shadow-beings. Kinds of fairies that had evil powers of darkness, shadows, night. They were always enemies of all the good fairies - and the kind that we are were their most hated enemies. I didn't want to believe it, but when I heard her name, I was sure of it."
"What is her name?" Isolde asked after a brief silence.
"Nightmare le Faye."
A shudder went down the spines of all in the room and silence enveloped them like mist.
"That's very... strange," Fae stated, breaking the chilly quiet.
"Very," echoed Parax. "Very strange indeed. All of it." A short silence followed; no one could think of what to say.
"But are we sure," Aella began, "that she is, in fact, evil? Perhaps we're jumping to conclusions. Prejudice is not something we should work into our daily schedule, but it seems to be recurring among us as of late."
"Probably another sign of the evil that Nightmare le Faye could be working," Fallon muttered fiercely. Aella rolled her eyes.
"Did you not just hear what I said, Fallon?" she demanded. "About the jumping to conclusions about Nightmare being evil?"
"How could she not be evil?" Fallon argued. "All the evidence - " ("- of which there is not much," Aella added to herself in her mind.) "- points towards her being evil. We can't ignore the facts laid out right in front of us. Normal dogs and wolves do not have wings, creepy eyes, uneasy auras, and just about everything else that Nightmare le Faye does have! And good fairies don't have any of those either - except the wings, of course." She paused briefly to take a breath, but Aella interrupted before Fallon could start up again.
"I think we should at least give her a chance," Aella insisted. "We don't know for sure. We'll see her at school later today and get to know more about her. Then we can advance our opinion a little farther. We have to give her a little chance. 'No prejudice' - it says so in our rules." Fallon rolled her eyes, knowing Aella had many good points - especially on the prejudice.
