"Where could they possibly be?" Joe muttered to himself as he ambled along the road. He had checked the whole house, then the yard, then the neighbors house and yard. He had even looked in the drugstore down the street, but his two twin brothers Andy and Matt were no where to be found.
It was getting dark, and Joe was worried. What would mom do when he had to go home and tell her that he had lost her two baby boys? As he walked down the empty street leading to his house, Joe called out "Andy! Matt! Where are you?" As the sun crawled towards the horizon, the houses of Joe's neighborhood began to look darker, more intimidating. Even Mrs. Wilson's house, who'd won 'nicest house on the block' three years in a row, had started to look haunted and threatening.
Before he faced his untimely fate with mom, Joe decided he would look the one place he had been avoiding the whole day. The old abandoned house on the corner of his street was a place that even the bravest of kids would not go in. The house was dilapidated, scratched white shutters hanging off their hinges, the ugly sandy brown colored paint was chipped off in huge quantities, revealing an ugly burnt-chocolate color beneath. Legend had it that a nice newlywed couple had moved in years ago. They were said to be the happiest people you would ever meet. Then one day, they stopped coming out of the house. The rumor was that they had been in a witness protection program for seeing a reporting a murder. The murderer had found out and searched for the couple. When he found them, he tortured them for months in their own basement. No one knows whether they died or if they were still in the basement, being barely kept alive by the bitter killer.
Trying not to think about this, Joe stepped on to the first step leading to the porch, the whole house seemed to sag around him. Joe stepped up to the dusty red front door and put his hand on the rusty door knob. With a deep breath, he pulled the door open and stepped in, making sure to leave the door ajar. He took one tentative step into the house, tense and ready just in case a werewolf or a man with a chainsaw jumped out in front of him like a haunted house. Joe made himself look around. The house was plain, a stair case immediately in front of him, a hallway to his left leading to what appeared to be the kitchen, and doorway to what he assumed to be the family to his right. Everything was old, covered in dust. Joe recognized the distinct smell of mold and decay fill his nose.
All of a sudden, the front door slammed shut with a loud bang. Joe screamed and jumped a foot in the air. He ran back to it and grabbed the knob. Surprisingly, the door opened without a problem. "Well then it must have been the wind that closed it." Joe thought to himself, even though he hadn't felt so much as a breeze. Confident that they would be able to leave without a problem when he found his brothers, Joe forced himself to turn around and start towards the kitchen. Then, he heard a scream. Strangely, it was unmistakeably female. Still Joe was scared out of his mind. The only thing that kept him from screaming and running away from this house to his and hiding under the bed was the thought that his brothers were in trouble. As he took another step forward into the kitchen, a voice stopped him cold. "Don't move an inch. If you so much as itch your nose, I will kill both of your brothers." The only thought that rang through Joe's mind was "How in the world did a simple game of hide and seek turn into my worst nightmare?"
