I got inspired by someone's character {well, a feature on it} and the feature is a box on its head. Would it by copying if I made a character a box on its head?

It all depends. Noone can copyright a box on a head, but if you copy the rest of the character, yes, it'd be copying.

Use the box idea, but have a twist! Like a drawn face on the box in place of a real one.
