Well, he had a lot of pressure on him, being the leader of the company, and he was so passionate about defeating Smaug and taking back what was his. This quest was his life. Imagine someone helped you in an accident. Maybe you were hit by a car and they resuscitated you and saved you. You were so thankful that before thinking anything through, because your mind is in such a state, you say you'll repay them in any way possible. Then they ask you for your most prized possession. Maybe it's something a relative passed on to you just before they died, and it obviously has
alot of meaning to you. Would you freely give it to this person without any negative feelings?
Thorin is not completely corrupt. The passion of treasure got the better of him, but in the end he forgave Bilbo. He realized how what Bilbo did was the right thing, it's just that the power possessions such as long lost treasure can have over you can be so overwhelming, I myself would not have acted any differently from Thorin, and I'm not known to be arrogant, corrupt or selfish by my friends. It's all very psychological, in a way. Tolkien really did think of everything when he wrote these characters. ^^
So, when it comes down to it, Thorin is a great Dwarf. He was brave, passionate and strong. Bilbo was simply stronger, because the treasure meant little to nothing to him, in comparison to what it meant to the company of Dwarves, Thorin in particular.
