So here are some quotes from the last topic I wanted to comment on.

Phantomhive's Shadow wrote:Ripper has white spots on his body, and is swimming near the top. I swear catfish are bottom-feeders. And he looks weird.. White patches. I can't catch him and put him in a bowl to examine him. And that would mean taking my betta out, since his tank is the perfect size. Wait, I do need to change his water.. I'll take a pic. Could it be that fungal disease, like on betta's they have white fuzzy patches on their heads?

Ah, what the heck. If it is, I may have to medicate Ripper.. And my betta has fin-rot -.- the fins have these little black spots on the fins, at first I thought it was normal. But when I looked closer, it seems to be getting worse.. ffffff

Who agrees with me that you shouldn't clean your tanks with nail polish on? I certainly never. I mean, the stuff could little by little wash away, and the fish might die. So I'm better safe than sorry.

and i hate nail polish

The white patches sound like ich, pictures would help. :) If a bottom dwelling fish is at the surface then it can mean you do not have enough oxygen in the tank or the water has ammonia in it. White fuzzy patches is usually slime coat coming off. :(
Fin-rot is from bad water quality, ammonia and the black spots could be ammonia burns. :(
No you should not have nail polish on when to do tank care but it would not cause theses issues and wont really hurt your tank unless in mass amounts.

Nikki wrote:Hmm, I've stuck my hand in the water when I had nail polish on. But unless you have your nails painted all the time I don't think it would do anything. And I've never met-- Wait, Idk if those fake nails you get put on at the salon are actually painted. So I might know some people who always have nail polish on XD

I HAS PROBLEMS, THOUGH!

Two, to be exact. Or maybe one with two fish?

First fish: Noel, my sister's betta, is in a 10 gallon tank. She has filter and heater. And pop eye -_-
She also looks like she has breeding stripes every time someone comes up to the tank. Like we are all male bettas or something.
Anyway
She has had pop eye for a while now. I did a water change. We changed her diet. And she had melafix treatment for a week with no results.
Oh, and now the whole tank is saltified, because I read that salt can keep a lot of bad fishy stuff away. Yay.
But she is eating normally and is quite active. She does seem to have lost color, but I can imaging having whatever it is that is giving her pop eye for this long is pretty stressful O.o

What are the ammonia, nitrate and nitrite levels and when is the last time you did a water change? Popeye can be from two things that I know of, bad water quality or fish tuberculosis. If it is not your water quality then I suggest taking the betta to a vet as fish TB can be transferred to humans. Wash your hands well after messing with the water and if you have any open wounds do not touch the water, use gloves then wash the gloves. Salt will help very much, there is another member who treated with some meds and it worked the first time, if she does not comment I will pm her and ask for you.

Second fish: Aurora, my female betta. She is in a 3 gallon bowl, filter, and a heater as of three days ago.
She also has pop eye as of this morning. Both of her eyes have a white flake standing over each of them.
She is also eating, but has been hanging out at the bottom of the tank and hasn't been flairing up like she usually does unless I put a mirror in the water.
I tested the water and got zero ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Over the week end I did a deep clean of her substrate (because I finally learned how to). I also changed the filter. It is a DIY sponge filter, and I keep two of the filters in there, one attatched to the air stone, and one just hanging out so that it can collect the good bacteria for its future use as a filter (in theory). And, again, I bought a heater on tuesday and installed it.
I put a few drops of melafix in, because it is only a 3 gallon, so I am hoping that helps my fisheh.

What tester are you using to test the water? If they are strips they are not very useful and can give wrong readings. I recommended using liquid tests.
