Melody and her cubs started to follow me. I led them onward to the carcass I had scented, when I heard Melody snarl. I whipped around and stared at the nomad male. My fur lifted. Even though he had covered down to show he was no threat, I growled and stepped toward him. My tail whipped angrily. I thought I had already warned him off before I met Melody and her cubs.

Melody didn't relax when the male retreated, but she did stop growling and forced her fur to lie down. "I have another question for you," she asked, looking at Kuma. "Are you, going to kill my cubs?"

I looked at Melody, taking my eyes off of the nomad male. I stared at her, momentarily forgetting about the male. Then I glanced at her cubs. Of course, males killed any cubs in his pride when he took over. Almost all of the time. But, since the cubs were lionesses, they might help to grow the pride. My heart skipped a quick beat. "No, I won't." I said, though if they had have been males I probably would have killed them. I wouldn't tell her that though. As soon as I heard the male's voice, I lunged toward him, but did not try to lunge on him. I landed a whisker away from him and growled in his face.
