Here's a good question for the thread. I hear a lot of judgement against wolf hybrids on CS... what do you guys feel about the wildcat hybrid breeds? Bengals, Savannahs, Toygers, Cheetohs, Serengetti, etc.

I absolutely HATE it when someone calls a husky or husky mix a wolf or wolf mix. People, learn what the hell a wolf looks like! I honestly don't think siberian huskies or malamutes look ANYTHING like wolves.

As far as hybrids go, I'm largely against them. I think most domestic animals are too far removed from their wild ancestors to make hybrids ethical. Even if domestic cats are closer then most other domestic animals, the fact is we've bred them to be social and to retain kitten-like behaviors. Most cats, not including ferals that weren't socialized with people, want and need to be around people. Nearly all wild cats, including the small ones, are solitary. So, by combining the two, you get a cat that could very well have a mix of both wild instincts and domestic instincts. Also, a low generation hybrid (like a F1) is just as dangerous and demanding as it's wild parent. To be fair, I largely don't agree with keeping exotics like tigers and wolves as 'pets'.

I have seen a real wolf mix before in real life. It is soooo extremely easy to tell the difference between an actual wolf mix and a husky-type mix being called a wolf mix. P:

As for the hybrids, I am not against them. African Wild cats breed with house cats all the time in nature, actually, and because of that their species is in danger. If its something that cats do all by themselves, why shouldn't we have them do it? Its not like it is going to harm either cat.
The thing I do have a problem with is selling F1 hybrids to the public, because they still retain so many traits from their wild cat parent. I don't think that any average person should be able to obtain these, and it is a good thing that some states have laws against it. But I think F2 and beyond, as long as the breeders make sure the potential owners are up to the task of owning a partially wild cat, it is fine. o3o

African wildcats (and Asian and European wildcats) do because they are the grey wolves of the cat world, except cats are much closer to their wild cousins than dogs are to wolves. Servals, Asian Leopards, and Caracals do not (Savannahs, Bengals, Caracats); they are 2-3x the size of the largest cat breed and would see cats as prey, and the females cannot give birth in F1 crossings unassisted

Since no one else wanted to respond to the topic >.> I'll respond to Sara's post separately.

I'm actually fine with certain hybrids and exotics as pets, keeping in mind that I also think people should be able to prove that they know their stuff when it comes to keeping ANY animal as a pet. When it comes to cats and dogs I think people need to step back and think about whether they're doing something for a purpose or just because it's cool. Wolf hybrids tend to come from the "wouldn't it be awesome" mentality, vs cat hybrids have been more "let's stop people from owning large cats by giving them a smaller more manageable version", which is a much more valuable mentality to have in the grand scheme of things. Toygers especially are only *technically* hybrids because they used Bengals as founder breeding stock, but they are similar to Tamaskans (which, from recent discover, used ONE Sarlooswolfhund which means they also have a drop of wild in them) which is "small tiger without tiger blood" and were originally created in an attempt to give people what they wanted (a pet tiger) without endangering the already tiny tiger population.

Here's a story:

My white siamese cat named Violet has blue eyes and is white, that means that she is deaf. One night my mom was watching a movie with headphones on and she heard a big "THUMP" and then heard a bunch of smaller thumps and turned around and guess what she saw? Violet was playing with a rock!!!!!We have all of these cat toys and Violet decided to play with a rock!....silly cat!

Hi, just popping in. I have a blue tabby point birman cat. She's now 10 years old and so far looking healthy. She's kinda half indoor cat as she can go out, but always in harness and leash, though she's really good at slipping out of the door if you're not paying attention or the door doesn't close all the way accidentally. But in summer she basically lives outside, sleeping under a bush or something...
Couple of pictures: X- x- X

Does anyone here personal experience of oriental breeds(siamese, balinese, oriental, seychellois)? I was thinking of getting one(longhair version for sure) at somepoint, so it would be nice to hear some experience about them. My friend recently got two oriental shorthairs and they seem lovely, though the girl is slightly timid if there's lot of people, understandable as they got her only maybe 3 weeks ago, and her brother is bit silly and not really looking where he's going... Meaning he has no problem attacking the toy head on, where the girl would first observe and then attack.
Can we pretend that the airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars?
I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now...

Hello!! I just found this thread ;p

My mom's friend has five or four cute Angorra kittens. They're trained to do their business outside. They're so fluffy and cute!! Except I have a fish pond. Afraid the'll eat them. My mom said they eat 5kg of kitty food a week. Wow.

@Hime: Omg the last pic looks like a furry livin ball! Where did you get her?

That's my cat there, sleeping. XD We got her as a kitten from a long time breeder(I think she started around the late 80ties, one of the very first breeders around here I think). She had at least 5 generations of my cat's family line living with her. So I've met about her whole mother's side of the family.

i dont own one thats a breed but one that somewhere in his mix he has oriental i belive and the classic personalty of one, they tend to be very smart cats

wiki is as i said very smart his main trick is to open doors or knock on them ,as a kitten he loved play and before he was de-sexed he loved to show he was a male when siting on the computar (this was befor flat screens ) another thing is he loves jumping more then my other cats offen finding places the others wouldnt to go to , like he got on a book case i didnt think any cat would jump on, he is allso a thinker offen when i use the water filter or fill it up he comes over and looks trying to work it out he allso loves humans and purrs the second hes given cuddles and offen snuggles in to who ever holds him or rubs there face but he knows not to do it to one person(this person is allgeric and wiki was allways told no if he tryed over a fue months he learned)

i need a new signature

Lights :off
