Mystic's Name: Artemis
Name Meaning:
When I look at Artemis I think gentle and soft and she somehow reminds me of the moon. I decided the name Artemis would suit her well. Artemis is named after the ancient Greek godess of the hunt and the wilderness who is also sometimes associated with the moon.
Gender: Female
Age: 24 years
Personality:
Artemis is very shy around those she is unfamiliar with. She's very intelligent but doesn't like to show it off very much. Artemis is also considered to be very kind and gentle toward others. She loves all things nature and sometimes prefers nature's company to other Mystics. Artemis is also very curious about the unknown. Because she was blinded at a young age, there are so many things Artemis doesn't know but she desires to find out. Artemis is also a very good listener. Although she is blind, the one thing she does well is listen, many of Artemis's friends come to her for advice. Lastly, just like all Mystics, Artemis is loyal to all that she loves be it another mystic or her homeland.
Strengths:
Her intelligence and knowledge of nature is a strong point for Artemis.
Weaknesses:
Artemis' blindness and her struggle to adapt is a trying challenge for her everyday. She also tends to get frustrated occasionally when her struggles get to her but she rarely takes it out on anyone else, normally it's herself who gets blamed. Her stubbornness is also another weakness of Artemis's, when she's set on a task there aren't many things that can pull her away from it. However, her stubbornness can also be a strength allowing her to focus on the tasks at hand and avoid bad influence. Although, she hates to admit it she's still secretly sore about the fact that her father was never there for her. She doesn't like to talk about him at all. His unfaithfulness to her and her family will always hurt Artemis, even when she goes to choose her own mate.
Likes:
Artemis likes nature and all things found in the wild. She also enjoys singing but doesn't like to sing in front of others.
Dislikes:
Artemis dosen't dislike much except for hate it's self. Hate is the reason for most conflict and Artemis believes most things can be settled in a much more peaceful manner.
History:
"Artemis, come along dear," My mother called.
"Coming Mom," I loped up beside her as we headed toward the river together. Mom watched me carefully as we walked making sure I kept up. Being my mother's only pup and on account of the fact that my father was never around, I was often the subject of concern and was used to this type of surveillance. We reached the river and Mom bent her head to take a long drink and I did the same. Mother reached over and grabbed me by the scruff of my fur and then set me down next to the river bank. She began washing me and I sat still as she did so. I looked over toward the river and for some strange reason, today it looked a little cloudier than normal. As a matter of fact, everything seemed cloudy today.
"It's so cloudy today," I said as mom finished giving me my bath. Mom tipped her head and looked at me for a moment.
"Are you sure Artemis? It's a perfectly clear day from what I can see," Mom sounded concerned. I took another look but nothing seemed to change.
"I suppose so," Even though it was a lie, I didn't want to alarm my mother. Mom seemed unconvinced but nodded anyway.
"Come on, we still need to get you breakfast," Mom said nudging me along.
"And you too!" I said trotting after her.
"Yes, and me too," Mom laughed as she picked up the pace. She slowed down at a small clearing and sunk down low to the ground. "Stay here Artemis. I'll be right back," Mom disappeared into a clump of forestry and proceeded to stalk her prey. I sat obediently in the bushes and waited while my small stomach rumbled anxiously for food. Suddenly, my eyes began to tear up for no apparent reason. I blinked rapidly to try and clear my eyes but they remained dark and cloudy. I finally managed to clear all the tears but I still couldn't see clearly. Frustrated, I gave a huff and laid back my long ears. I jumped as the ground began to vibrate dully and I could faintly hear the pounding of hooves. I looked around but couldn't seem to see anything but darkness now.
"Mom?" I asked receiving no reply. I felt a quick wind brush my fur and then the feeling of fangs gripping my pelt.
"Artemis!" I heard my mother's scolding voice. She carried me for what felt like a minute before setting me down again. "Artemis! Didn't you see that elk changing toward you!?" Mom sounded furious. I paused for a moment and thought.
"No, actually I didn't," I replied matter of factly. I heard the catch in Mom's breath as she prepared to scold me for being smart with her when she stopped.
"Wait, what do you mean, you didn't?" She asked in a softer tone.
"I can't Mom. I can't see anything. What's wrong with my eyes?," I looked around confirming the fact that I really couldn't see at all. I felt Mom's soft breath on my face as she bent down and looked into my eyes.
"You can't see me at all?" Her voice seemed to crack with sadness.
"No. Not at all, Mom," I replied. I knew Mom was crying now because I could hear her muffled sobs as she tried to disguise the severity of the situation for my sake.
"Artemis, you're blind," Mom whispered.
I could see nothing but darkness now but I knew my Mother was carrying me home. She set me down at what must have been our den, the den that I had known ever since my birth and yet I couldn't even recognize it now. Mom left me at the den while she ran to go get us a quick meal. Normally, she would get us a nice elk but I could tell that she was too worried to leave me alone for that long because I easily recognized this taste as rabbit. When our meal was done, I stumbled outside with the aid of my mother.
"Careful now Artemis, It's over here," Mom gently nudged me out the den opening. Once outside I looked up at the sky.
"Is it night yet, Mom?" I asked.
"Not yet, Dear," Mom replied gently.
"It looks like it to me," I said still gazing at the sky.
"I know, It always will," Mom replied sadly.
Background information:
Artemis was blinded by a condition called Glaucoma which is the most common cause of blindness in dogs. Glaucoma runs in Artemis's family but not everyone is affected. Artemis's Glaucoma didn't effect her at birth but quickly hit before she reached one year old.
One fact about Mystics:
Rare mystics have "wings". Males have spikes and females have small "wings" sprouting from their shoulders.
Why do you want her:
Her design is absolutely elegant. Artemis seems to be a character that I can see myself using a lot in the future. I find blind characters are so fascinating to play and give history to. I had so much fun writing out Artemis's history and I hope to further continue it in more depth if possible. Mystics themselves look to have a lot of potential as a species and I'd be glad to be a part of them. If not Artemis, I'd love to be the owner of a mystic of in the future. I don't really want Artemis because she's rare but because I felt a special kind of awe when I first saw her. She's beautiful and there's no denying that.
What will you do with her:
Artemis would get art and If possible, I love to role play with her! I would love to write out her full story and develop her through a role play. She would receive her own spot on my character thread and I promise that she would get lots of love!
