So now for the very detailed novel of our lesson.
Riley is such a saint. I have no idea how he put up with me, especially at the canter.
So I got on him and walked around for a while. He is very different from any horses I have ridden. He is really sensitive, and it felt really nice bending him in the corners and pushing him over with my leg. I haven't ridden a horse that responsive before, even Rhumba, so it felt really cool and a bit new, even though I knew how to bend.
Well, when we finally started trotting, I was in for a surprise. Riley has an extremely bouncy hunter trot. He moves his head quite a bit, or at least it felt like he was, so I had to trot for a while. He kept on kind of bouncing me out of the saddle, but near the end I got used to it.
He also responds to half halts very well. I just pull back the outside rein a little, and he slows.
Anyways, I'll have to get used to his trot... but I have time. Lots of time. And near the end I even felt a little more comfortable.
So we trotted a little, and every time it was a little better.
Also, just a little... I don't know. But Riley isn't lazy at all. I have to kick him a bit to get him to trot, but after that he's fine. I also have to pull back quite hard to stop/slow him but oh well.
So, then we moved on to cantering. Well, I asked him and he didn't canter, and then my new instructor came over and talked to me about the 'new' way of asking for a canter. You don't kick... you bend the horse to the inside, and push in and up with your outside leg. So I went back to the rail and got an epic transition... but a wrong lead. So we trotted and then cantered again. And we had a nice little canter for about three seconds, until I lost my left stirrup. So then I squeezed him in an attempt to stay on, because his canter is very different, and then he sped up, and then I nearly lost my right stirrup, so then I was squeezing him and he sped up some more because he's a really good boy, and then I finally got my stirrup back and half halted, but by then I was actually scared so I was squeezing him, so poor Riley just sped up a little. So then my instructor yelled "WALK!" and I had to leeeean back and pull on the reins like my life depended on it. And then Riley walked.
Oh geez that horse is a saint. Any other horse would've thrown its head around, bucked, shied, whatnot but Riley just kept going and tried to listen to me even though I was telling him all sorts of crazy things. He is SUCH a good horse. He didn't get mad at me at all. Even Winnie would've been pretty angry.
So we trotted around and Riley got a little fast because I was tense, but then I relaxed and half halted and he LISTENED to me. Oh gosh. After a horrible cantering session, he still listened to me half halting him. I love him so much.
So we trotted around and I felt a bit more comfortable at the trot. Yay!
Also, everyone was talking about how good we are for each other. My new instructor, M, was telling everyone that she really liked me on Riley. My friend in the lesson said I looked awesome on him. S said that he's perfect for me and that I looked great. A bunch of people were watching me ride and said that Riley and I were meant for each other.
Poor guy, he was so hot. I spent a really long time washing him, especially on those veins that cool them down. And I think I hugged him a million times!
Also, I'm going to browse on Smartpak and order his stuff now because our half lease is now official!
I have to get a bridle, a bit, a martingale, boots... and I think some other stuff. But I want to get some hoof oil and I want to get him a halter and lead rope too, because he doesn't have one.
See, at my barn, there's a bunch of halters, lead ropes, and girths that everyone uses. No horse really has 'their own'. But I want Riley to have his own!
Also, about the bridle/martingale/boots... if I ever get my own horse, and it isn't Riley, then I'll just use the same bridle/martingale/boots on my horse. So I'm fine with getting that stuff. (:
I love Riley so much. <3
