Well mine did live that long. 2-5 years is the average lifespan and is possible.to live longer than that. My rats I took extremely good care of, spot cleaning every day along with cleaning the dishes. Weekly cleans along with monthly scrub outs. They got some human food of meats, fruits and veggies. Then lots of exercise.

My rats lived to four and five years of age, I know because I rescued both when they were two weeks old.

Kvikr, you're basically saying I have had too many and didn't look after them properly... but yet you have one lone rat right now? What about the fact that is just cruel, rats need company with other rats.

Trust me, my ratties have never went without. We've spent literally thousands of pounds at the vets, I put everything into looking after my ratties. So - yes. I run a rat forum, why would I start a rat forum and run that for the past 5 years if I was such a bad rat owner who just took on so many rats and couldn't look after them?

Also surely it is better than someone is able to take in a lot of rats, rescues I mean, and give them a good home but maybe they don't get an hour every single day out of their cage, than they end up outside, or going to a snake food home? Which is really best? Like I said again, go look on actual rat forums. For example there's one member on a Canadian rat forum who has had hundreds of rats, more than me, and to be honest even if I don't see eye to eye with her, she's one of the most knowledgable rat owners I've come across on the internet.

I'd personally rather that someone was able to afford and devote time to a lot of ratties than have one lone rat.... that's just not fair on the rat is it.

I spend every minute of my day with her beside me unless she needs to drink, she's not lacking any company.
And I'm not even going to bother humoring the rest of that with a response, since you seem to be taking everything as a direct insult. Why you can't just state your side without trying to make someone else feel like crap at the same time is beyond me. I'm not even.. adawwdk.

Stop righting there is no point. But to prove it doesn't matter if it's a lone rat or a pair. The oldest rat I have ever owned lived to be 5 years old. I rescued her from petco, someone has left her outside petco and nobody payed any attentiont to the fact that it was about 100 degrees out side and the rat was in a cage with no food or water. We took that in and she was a LONE rat! She lived to 5 years and went everywhere with me except school. She went to work with my mom when I was in school. So I say as long as you can give a rat the time they need it can be a lone rat.

Sorry if I came across as rude, but your post was insulting. My rats have never had anything but the best.

I just don't think there is any excuse for her being alone. It doesn't matter if you spent 20 minutes or 20 hours with her a day, you aren't a rat and you can't do the same as a rat can with her. Rats love human company - of course they do - but they are social animals and they need other rats.

I'm not saying that they are going to die younger or even become really depressed, but why would you not give them company? Why not give them something they really do need? We're not rats, we're not the same as them.

Why are you fighting about this?
Kvikr loves his rat, she's his baby and would never do anything to harm her or make her upset.
It shouldn't matter if he only has one rat, at least he interacts with it a good amount of time during the day and doesn't leave her completely alone.
My friend had only one rat and he was just fine, well taken care of and loved. I'd play with him when I went over and nothing was wrong with him.

I thought the Tulio was a fimiliar name when you showed me the picture, Shadowed, I thought it was for someone in the thread C;

My boys are finally using thier hammock more \030/ Now I don't feel as horrible watching them both trying to fit on the ledge in their cage when they sleep.
I think the only reason they're using it is because now they are bigger, one almost always falls off. I had to put the hammock under the ledge so they would fall into the hammock and not on the floor X3 Silly ratties :'D
