My doggy had a tumor and we feed him beneful. I don't think the two link.
Beneful actually helps my dogs' fur health and they have beautiful coats.

On the other hand, I've been trying to convince my parents to start buying blue
buffalo for my pups instead BUT in this tight economy, blue buffalo is very
expensive, double the price of beneful for about the same sized bag.

Are there any other healthy dog foods for a cheaper price but still have
glucosamine and hondroitin in them? My puppy has poor joins so I'd like
to keep her as healthy as possible.

I noticed that you said Science Diet is bad… My cat eats Prescription Diet, which I do believe is the same brand, and Meow Mix wet food.
We have to give him the wet food and prescription food because he was having major problems; while we were out on vacation once, we came back and found blood stains on the kitchen floor and the carpet in the hall, because he'd gotten crystals blocking his bladder. His vet told us that it was due to stress most likely, but we have to give him wet food and the Bladder Something or other Prescription Diet to make sure that it doesn't happen again.
I also noticed that you said upon changing your cats' food, they became much socialable, which my cat is far from.
I was hoping that you could suggest a food or two that would work better than the current food, as well as make him more socialable, without creating a problem money-wise. (The Prescription Diet costs quite a bit… If my parents had to pay much more, I have a feeling they would be ready to get rid of the cat…)

A quick note: He is about a year and a half, two years of age. He bites quite often, since he still enjoys playing a lot. He is fairly large, too; I believe his mother was a Maine Coon. Oh yes; and he never purrs. I've aybe heard him purr once or twice since we got him. I don't know if that helps at, but I thought I should add it just in case. And I know that this os a dog food guide, but I saw that you also had a bit about your cats, so I was hoping you could help.

Thank you, so much. ^^

EDIT: My cat is doing okay on his current food; I was just wondering if there was anything better.

The science diets can be a scam. ;D Theres been studies done that the pH has very little bearing in urinary track health (for cats). Instead, upping water intact is a huge thing. Feeding wet food, investing in a water fountain, even adding water to straight kibble can really help! My girl had reoccurring bad urinary infections. We switched off of meow mix and similar foods and onto Evo, Wellness CORE, Blue buffalo Wilderness and others like this. No problems since. Also bought a cat fountain and have added water to every meal. =) I used to know a person with a dual gendered cat who would get bladder infection very very often. Like.. Once every couple months. She was feeding meow mix, switched to the vet food and they got WORSE. Much worse and much more often. Switched to a grain-free.. Acana I think. Added more canned food.. Never had a problem since and its been two years. <3

I highly highly recommend Evo, or Innova Prime is a bit cheaper and easier to find. Natures Variety Instinct is awesome as well. BB Wilderness is great. I buy 5-6 lbs at a time for roughly 20 bucks. For three cats a 5-6 lb bag will last roughly a month. ^^; Add in more water! Add water to the kibble for every meal. Water fountains encourage cats to drink more as well. Canned or raw is also wonderful!

Also, about the social thing.. When an animal is fed a higher quality diet I really think the feel better and become more outgoing. =) If he's having behavioral problems.. Watch "My cat from hell", Jackson Galaxy is awesome. >_>

Last thing, I promise! Catinfo.org is an awesome cat site for diet! As for your price problem.. Science diet is very close the high quialty price.. Maybe like 1 or 2 twos short. Seriously. The food should also last /much/ longer. On the low quality foods my 12lb cat would eat a full cup. On this new food I'm lucky if she eats a whole 1/2 cup.. A day!

My kitten has always been on a high quality diet: Image Look at that shiny body!

Beneful is a bad food. If you think it help the coat, try changing to a high quality food and be amazed as the soft silky lushness. <3 I get complemented /all the time/ o how soft and shiny my dogs fur is and her coat isn't supposed to be soft. ;D Its a coarse/rough outer coat with dense hard undercoat.. Yet somehow she's sssooo soft. Like silk. BHT/BHA (found in beneful) are known to cause cancer. If not cause cancer then surely promote tumor growth. If you'd like I get dig around and find an article from the National Vet Association that says the same thing. Amusingly, BHT/BHA are found in foods PROMOTED by the NVA.

I totally understand the economy. It sucks. Check out Taste of the Wild. Its the cheapest grainfree out there. They thing is, you feed SO much less on a higher quality food. On beneful I was feeding 6+ heaping cups A DAY for a 50lb dog. The food I have now is Natures Variety Instinct and for a 50lb dog you feed.. drum roll.. 1 and 5/8ths of a cup. See the difference? For my dog a 20lb bag will last 2+ months, thats 30 bucks a month. (Granted I buy REALLY expensive food! LOL!) Taste of the Wild was like.. 30lbs for 45 bucks and lasted her 2 months, 3 cups a day roughly. 22.50 a month cost wise. =) Thats for a 50lb dog. Not to shabby.

I like Taste of the Wild for the price. =) Its the cheapest grain-free out there.

I'm also slightly confused.. I checked the label of all of Beneful's dry foods, save the puppy.. and.. I saw neither Glucosamine nor hondroitin? Checked Taste of the Wild and they don't have either as well. However Earthborn Holistic Primitive Naturals is very very close price wise to TOTW and they are FULL of antioxidants and other awesome stuff. Also, raw chicken! Its full of glucosamine. :D

Wow! Thank you so much- I'll have to talk to my parents about that. I'm sure that they would be a bit happier if it ends up working for him. Though I doubt they will try it…
And we already have a fountain; he loves it.
Anyways, can you buy the Innova Prime at PetSmart by any chance? That's where we get his prescription, and I'm sure it would be easier to persuade them if we were right there. ^^
And I've thought that our vet's opinion was biased; she has Hills Science/Prescription Diet ads all around the clinic…

Yes, unfortunately companies like Science Diet pay vets to sell their products, so they do tend to be biased about that D:

-phew- I am so glad we switched our food to Taste of the Wild not long ago. We were feeding them some special thing before from SmartPak, so I am not really sure where it ranked but they didn't like it a lot. We got it because one of our dogs has bad allergies x3 But he does really good with the Taste of the Wild.

For cats personally I like EVO. I've tried Innova and TotW as well but Saffron has done best on EVO. She's a grazer and 1/4 cup EVO will last her all day and into the next morning vs TotW which she was pesting for more food after about half a day and One Beyond she'd scarf down and immediately go back to pesting... shows you how filling a food is because unlike dogs, cats either like a kind of food and eat it OR they don't like a kind of food and ignore it. Cats are one of the few mammals that will refuse food they think they don't like until they starve to death. So if she's eating it steadily over time that doesn't mean she dislikes it, it means that it fills her up and she thinks it tastes good anyway.

Since switching off of Science Diet which the shelter had her on and onto EVO I've noticed her ear (permanently damaged due to actions of previous owner) doesn't get infected as much and she has a much thicker softer coat, plus she sheds less dander which is good for me because I'm allergic to dander! She's also a dainty cat and anything that's not grainfree turns her into a 10lb tub of lard, but when on EVO she's 8lbs and muscular.

Oh god, i was at my bf's friends house who has cats and a bulldog. My allergies were SO BAD just being in the house. My eyes were itching.. My nose was itching.. Was so awful. I can bury my face in all three of my cats fur with no reaction whatsoever. D:

Woah.
My kitty's w tub o lard pretty much; about 16 pounds I think, and nomming my hand a we speak.
Well, where can you get EVO, then? I want something affordable and healthy for my little furball, but I don't want my parents to drive all over town in search of a kitty food for my picky companion.
Like I said, I'll talk to my parents. And if worse comes to worse, I'll save up and buy it for him myself.
Thank you so much for your help guys; I honestly appreciate it, and I'm sure my little Onsers will too. ^^
