What gorgeous girls!
My Mum's rock solid on me not getting rats. I showed her a photo of a dumbo, and she said it was cute. However, on reflection I think that's more to do with our malfunctioning printer turning everything pink...her favourite colour.
The problem is she does kind of need to semi-want them, as though I'm saving up to buy a cage (just in case, XD...) she's going to be the one who'd have to drive me to the vet, and stuff like that. I'm trying to get her over her thing about their tails- harder than it sounds, XD- and it's not going so well. I'm resigning myself to the fact I may have a long wait before I can bring home two lovable balls of ratty sweetness, but I'm prepared to wait, XD.
On the plus side, my best friend might be looking after/getting a pair of rats soon, so I can just move into her house, XD.

@WolfOnATreadmill - Don't give up! My own mother was completely set on not getting me rats but eventually she caved in! I've had three rats in total now, a male that died in december, and two littles females I bought in July. c;

They sound lovely, :)
I've just emailed her a gorgeous photo of another dumbo- she prefers their ears- and am waiting for a response.

Your mum will change her mind, I'm sure! My own mom used to hate rats, and I had to show her lots of pictures and tell her how they're like little dogs and how great they are. When she let me get my first two, she was scared to even go near them, but she warmed up to them in no time! Now she loves all of my ratties just as much as she loves the other animals.

{We have a PetSmart, but it's an hour away. I'll check at the local WalMart, and at the place where I got my rats before going all that way. I know to keep an eye out, though :3}

I don't mean to butt in but, you really shouldn't use Aspen for rats. It's bad for their repository systems because of the dust it has. Or maybe I'm confusing it with something else.

Anywho, I use both newspaper and Carefresh mixed. It's never given any of my rats problems, though it is a bit more expensive than the wood based bedding though.

{Now everyone is talking about how their mother doesn't - or didn't - like rats. I feel you all, my mom was totally against them until she saw them x3 And even now, two months later, she is only just letting them climb up her arm. She warmed up to my boys pretty quick though :3}

{So... what is really the best of the best bedding wise? If ceder, pine, and aspen are all bad, what should I use?}

Dear god no i did not put her to sleep my self.
My father-in-law is a vet and he put her to sleep.

She was put to sleep because she started hurting her babies so they died slowy. She Was a very aggressive Rat in the end she was fine one day then she just snaped and started hurting the babies
i would have saved the babies but they were beyond Help when i returned home. She was fine the morning i left but not when i came home that night. And she was mutilating herself
She Wasn't a happy rat in the end And she would not have been able to go back with her other rat friends.
so my father-in-law Said she and the babies needed to be put to sleep.
i help as i am a vet nurse but we only put our animals to sleep with the right drugs

Some stores carry something called "Carefresh confetti" bedding, it's like little bits of somewhat soft ground up paper.
