Chapter Nine

We landed in the forest as planned, hopefully unseen. Dente led the way out and we casually strolled into the town in 'Pennsylvania'. I had seen houses before, but I'd never been in a real town. Of course, Bea filled me in on what it was like. Tall buildings called skyscrapers, cars, roads, and tons of people. Dente seemed to feel right at home, but I didn't like it. Too many people. To many things. To crowded. We shuffled through the crowds of shoppers and pedestrians, looking for a nice place to eat and run. I'd never stolen anything before, except Bea's old hiking boots that fit me so well. I took them and they got covered in mud. Was she ever mad - I shook my head, pushing Bea and my old life to the back of my head. That wasn't important right now. What was important was my growling stomach.

"How about there?" suggested Dente, pointing to a fancy-looking restaurant called 'Samuels'. I shook my head. "Nah, too fancy. They probably have high-securety, and it looks packed." It was true. The restaurant had a long line extending out of the front doors, filled with people who looked as if they'd been waiting a long time. "Okay, how about that one?" He pointed to another restaurant, not too fancy but not a complete dump. I read the name and squealed like a mouse. "McDonalds! Yes, lets go there."

We stood in line for a minute or two before the lady at the order station asked us for our order. She looked bored out of her mind, and I imagined that I'd be too if I had to sit there all day and ask people if they wanted fries with that. "I'll have a Big Mac with double the cheese but no lettuce please." said Dente politely. "Oh, and a chocolate milkshake with fries." She punched in the order on her computer and turned to me. "Well?" she demanded. "Okay, I'll have a Big Mac too, with a strawberry milkshake - no, vanilla - and a side of fries - wait, make that a chocolate, no, strawberry milkshake. Yeah, strawberry." The lady shot me a questionable look, then replied, "Okay, that'll be 14.76." Dente and I exchanged a glance. "Shouldn't we get our food first?" I asked, batting my eyes sweetly. Evidently, charm didn't work on her. "No, you pay then we give you the food." She sneered. "What's the matter? Not enough money?" Dente kicked my shin, and I turned to tell him off, but he had a wild look in his eyes and I knew what he was about to do next. We both leapt over the counter and into the kitchen, where all of the cooks were preparing the food. The aroma of french fries wafted over me and I went straight for them. I grabbed handfuls and handfuls of them, shoving them into the pockets of my sweater. A cook grabbed onto my hood, but a threw him a kick that sent him sprawling into about three other workers. Then I grabbed a burger that a cook was flipping in mid-air and stuck it in my mouth. He gasped in surprise, but I was long gone. I heard Dente cry, "Lets go!" and I grabbed two buns before heading out the back door behind him. Workers began to spew outside the doors, shouting rather rude words that I don't think I'll repeat. We headed straight for the forest, where we ran side by side, eating our french fries and shouting with glee. Adrenaline pumped through my veins, and I felt good.

We took flight and ate our burger's while flying, which didn't exactly agree with my stomach, so we landed in a tree and ate together. "Its a shame we didn't grab some ketchup while we were there." said Dente between mouthfuls. I wiped my mouth and nodded in agreement, then I leaned against the trunk of the tree and sighed. "It was fun." I huffed, catching my breath. "I can't believe I did that."
"And we saved 14.76. Not bad." We laughed, and for the first time in the last few days, I was happy.

Chapter Ten

Our bellies full, we kept course through the harsh winds of 'Pennsylvania'. Dente talked about his old life, about 'states' and geography, and then he started rambling on about countries and provinces. That got me confused, but I listened. When he spoke about his family, I could tell he was upset. He talked about how his father died in a car crash, and his mother ran a small laundry business that didn't make much money. He was the eldest child, and his sister, Nina, was the youngest. He remembered the day they took him away. His mother was heart-broken to see him go, but she said he'd have a better life at the Lab. She thought they would care for him. I felt awful by the time he stopped talking. The silence began once more, and it dragged on and on.

Pennsylvania was huge. Apparently, most states are big. We flew for hours, not speaking, not looking at each other, just constant flying. My wings grew tiered after a while and I started to glide instead of flapping. Dente did the same, examining my moves. "Maybe you could teach me some stuff." he suggested. I only shrugged, and we returned to the awkward silence. Then I realized something was wrong. The trees were growing bigger and bigger. "Dente, do the trees look... closer, to you?" I asked. He looked down. "Yeah... yeah, they do." he replied, nervous. I looked up at the sky, then at my wings. "We're falling." I realized, flapping my wings to regain hight. I managed to stay up, but Dente kept falling. "Land in a tree!" I called after him. He swirled in the air, his wings flapping desperately, until he stopped falling inches above the tree. He let himself drop onto the highest branch that would support his weight, and I shot after him. I landed on another branch, and we both breathed heavily. "What happened?" I asked, clutching onto my stomach. I didn't feel so good again. Dente gave me a thoughtful look. "I think we just got tiered out, and we lost fuel." he replied. "Fuel?" I asked, unfamiliar with the term. "Its what makes things move." replied Dente. "You know, like when you fuel a car?" I nodded, still confused, but I decided not to press the matter. But I honestly didn't think 'fuel' was the reason for our wings to fail. "Lets just stop flying for a while." I suggested. "Until our wings recover."

"I think there might be another town up ahead." I said, peering through the trees. "I can see a road." Dente squinted his eyes against the sun to get a closer look. "Yeah, I think you're right. Lets check it out." We jumped down from the tree, using our wings to soften the fall. I pulled unzipped my sweater, which still smelled of warm french fries, and tucked in my wings. Then, I carefully put on my sweater over my wings. Dente did the same. We hiked through the woods for a while until we came to the road. "I can see a town." I observed. "Lets spend the night there. Its getting dark." He agreed, and we headed for the town.

The town was exactly like the other one we'd robbed. Loud, crowded and smelly. I plugged my nose as we passed by a garbage can, which smelled suspiciously of dead rats and old milk. Dente led the way past the crowds of people, then we back up into a narrow alleyway. On the other side was a lake, the water sparkling in the sunlight and dappled with lilly pads. Frogs hopped around the banks, and I thought I saw a fish or two. The sharp blades of grass were shimmering with water. It was the complete opposite of the town we'd just come out of. "Its beautiful." I remarked. Over top of the lake was a small, wooden arched bridge, with honeysuckle spinning up the posts. Couples holding hands walked over it, talking and kissing. There were names engraved on the four posts suspending the bridge, circled with hearts and a few 'A+B=<3' 's. A sign was hung up lazily on one of the posts, reading 'Lovebird's Bridge'. We walked over the bridge together, and I hoped he couldn't tell I was blushing. On the other side was a small park, with couples sitting on benches and carving names into trees. We walked through the park together, and I felt Dente take my hand in his. I blushed even more, and he smiled. We walked through the park together just like that, just the two of us, holding hands, not saying anything.
