No, you just need six gold items total, plus the ring to get the pirate dogs.

Actually when I went to trade them in, I had way more than 6 of the items, but it wanted one of each plus a random extra

It was relevant because (at least in my case though it may not be true for all) it wanted one of each type of jewelry, plus one extra and wouldn't accept just 6 random pieces of jewelry to trade in for the pirate dogs. I may be wrong of course so take what I say with a grain of salt

Probably, but if you look at the summer events from past years, they also release new pets a day or two before it ends as well.

@Hoof: While it's not a discussion thread, it is a thread about the outcomes and how to get them, which makes my comment (if it had been correct for the general populace) relevant. Hmmm.. I traded in hermit crabs for the pets again (and still didn't get the horse DX), but then the hermit crab section completely disappeared from the mermaids page. I'm going back to check, but I don't know.
