Adeline's eyes flickered open, darkness and warmth fading from them like dreams from her thoughts. She lay on her back for a brief minute, listening to the patter of rain on the window next to her bed. The light brown blinds were closed, but she could hear the tapping; it sang and danced, made her want to crawl back under the downy covers and ignore every introduction, new face, and awkward moment that was going to happen once she admitted to herself that hiding wasn't an option. Denial was so very tempting. Taking a deep breath, she sat up and pushed the covers down to her waist, glaring at the gray flannel pajamas she had borrowed from the Academy upon her arrival two weeks earlier. They'd given her time to adjust, meet new people, but all she'd really done was stay in her apartment and take steamy bubble baths, over and over again. The water bill was probably sky high, but warm water was a such a novelty that she really didn't care. Besides, any names she'd learned had vanished from memory, anyways.
Finally, too cold not to do something, Addie swung her legs over the edge of the bed and into her fluffy new slippers, another curtesy of the Academy. She crossed the room to the dark mahogany dresser that inhabited the space between the door frame and an old chair with velvety cushions. The chair looked out of place in the fairly modern-styled room, but it was a comfort- so did she. In the dresser, there was a colorful assortment of presumably fashionable clothes: shirts, skirts, jeans in a rainbow of dyes, scarves and jackets. Adeline pulled out some dark-washed skinny jeans and paired them with a white oversize shirt that had little forest-green birds printed on it. Out of necessity she also took a light purple scarf and red jacket with a fur-lined hood.
The only thing she knew how to cook in the kitchen was ramen noodles-bleh- so, being the thief that she was, Adeline raided the fridge and pantry, found her meager stock already half gone in the two weeks she'd been using it, and subjected herself to a rice cake with cinnamon on top. Not particularly healthy, but she was too nervous to eat anymore than the bland breakfast she had.
Teeth and hair brushed, makeup applied and several minutes in front of the sink with the hot water running on her hands wasted, Adeline was headed out the door. The silver clock on her wall had read about six fifty, as near as she could guess- it had litle lines where the numbers are, in favor of a modern theme than practicality. As she walked down the high-ceilinged hallways in the old castle, she tried to remember the way to the Mission Room, tracing the map she had been given in her mind. The map was sitting on her desk know, where she'd left it the night before in an attempt to get herself to remember to take it. Adeline was about to consider going back to her room when she came across two big double doors that said "Mission Room" on the wall next to them in small, stiff looking gold letters.
" This must be it," she said out loud, just to confirm to herself that she actually wanted to go into that room full of people. Her feet made the decision for her, and Adeline found herself staring at an eye scanner, then walking into a gigantic room full of chairs, some chairs full with a person. At the front of the room was a huge screen that had pictures of faces next to lettering, probably the faces were students, she couldn't tell from where she was standing. Adeline walked down an aisle and sat in one of the back row.
