Well, my mom wouldn't let me have rats *at first*. I badgered her until she finally decided to get me one. However, I talked to the pet store's rat expert and he said you should have at least two. So I went to my mom and my case was: "Do you want my rattie to die, mom? They can get depressed when they are alone too often and I have school! The rattie needs a playmate so he wont stop eating and die!!" And it worked.

Hello everyone;
I don't post here very often, but I was hoping that I could get some help with something.

My two girls, both pet shop/feeder rats, are almost two years old, and their health is starting to decline. One of the two, Reagan, has already had three surgeries for tumors and several respitory infections within the last year, while her sister, Clark, has had no problems, and is in much better health.
I get the feeling that Clark is still going to be with me for a while, but Reagan will not. Unfortunately, as I only have two years left before I go away to university, I'll be unable to get another pair of rats to live with the remaining rat.
So, my question is this; if one rat passes away before the other, but new rats cannot be gotten, how does one keep the remaining rat happy?
I realize the importance of having two rats, which is why I bought both sisters instead of just the one, so I'm very worried about this.

Had anyone here ever dealth with this situation and/or have any advice for me?

Maybe you could find another rat that is the same age and needs a new friend? Maybe borrow a rat from someone and give it back when Clark too passes.

I wish I could! I'm worried he might get depressed sometimes, but no signs of it yet. *whew*

Do rats have legal rats any where? Here, you can own only 1 legally.

Of course they do, all animals (well, vertebrates) have their own rights, at least where I live. There are laws about cage sizes, the age when they can be separated from their mom, taking them to the vet when they are ill, not letting them live alone and more.

REALLY!!!
Here in Australia our laws don't give a S#!$ about small animals as far as i know
rats are classed as pests to most people here.
