"I do it to avenge my people. I don't do it for honor or anything else." rom stated with slight glare as he remembered that night.
Rom was returning from a hunt, his first hunt alone since his coming of age. It was the time of the Elk Moon, the time of year when the elk began to appear in the area after beginning their migration south for the summer. All the people of the Lupi had gathered together to celebrate the arrival of the elk and another season of food. The Lupi were a nomadic group and relied heavily on killing enough prey for food to last throughout the year.
Rom dragged his kill through the forest where the Lupi encampment was. He had brought down an elk buck completely alone, a feat which only a few of the Lupi could claim. He had used his eagle form to soar over the land looking for the prey. Once he spotted a small herd of elk he dove down towards the group. The herd sensed him coming and bounded into the forest. Rom shifted to his wolf form and took off after them. He raced past trees in pursuit of the buck he had singled out. Fast as an arrow, he sped through the forest, right on the heels of the large male. Only a few feet from it now, Rom launched himself and landed on its back. Under his weight, it collapsed to the ground where Rom bit into its neck, severing the jugular. In only a few moments the it had bled out. Rom began the long walk back to camp dragging the elk behind him.
An hour after bringing down the elk, Rom could smell the cooking fires. The smell of cooking elk, rabbit, and other game made his mouth water. He looked up and noticed that there was much more smoke than normal. Some of the larger hunting parties must have brought home some larger prey. He noted the height of the sun and realized he would be one of the last hunters back. He continued through the forest until he could see the large encampment. Rom froze as he looked around at the devastation; fires blazed and roared. Bodies of men, women and children littered the ground. Rom dropped the elk and ran toward his family’s tent. He pushed aside the tent flap and saw his family lying in pools of deep crimson. Everyone, his mother, father and sister were dead. Shock began to take effect in body, his vision blurred and he stumbled through the rest of the blazing camp. No one was left. All the Lupi were dead—except for him.
The next few days were hazy to Rom. The first thing he remembered after seeing the massacre of his people was waking up in a warm bed with the scent of rabbit stew in the air. His eyes came open and he bolted up, looking around. His eyes stopped on a stooped figure tending to the stew burning in a fireplace. The figure stood and turned to look at Rom. “Ah. I see you’ve finally awoken.” The stranger said smiling.
“Where am I?” Rom asked looking around at his surroundings.
“This is my home. My name is Ganich and I am of the Archne clan. I found you unconscious outside my home and brought you in. You almost died from a fever, but your resilient wolf nature brought you back from the edge of death.”
“I am Romulous. Thank you for saving me. I am in your debt.” Rom said bowing his head.
“Yes. You’re right. If I remember correctly, by your clans laws, in exchange for saving your life, you owe me a life debt. And I already have plans for you young one.” Ganich said.”Remember what has been done today. What I will teach you will help you avenge your people.”
The next few years saw Rom training with Ganich as his instructor. Ganich taught Rom how to survive in the dark world of corruption and death. Rom learned the history and politics of each clan and multiple fighting styles as well. Ganich told Rom what he taught him would help him to hunt down those who murdered his people and avenge those who died. Finally, after five long years, Rom was released from Ganich’s life debt. He set out on his own to seek out those who had any part in the killing of his clan.
