One day, I was running at a steady lope around a little pond at the base of the mountain that is my home. I had slept later than usually, and needed to stretch out my sore and tired muscles. I actually lived about half-way up the mountain, but at this time in the harsh winter, there were a lot of humans who hiked up near my home, and they always made fires, and I was afraid of getting caught on fire while sleeping, so during the winter, I made a small, temporary home at the bottom. Fire was my biggest fear. Well, pretty much my only fear, but still. Almost every-night, with-out fail, I had a horrible night-mare about being burned to death. Now, while I was running I heard the sounds of a deer crashing through the underbrush. I pricked my ears and turned my head to glance in the direction.
Distracted, I didn't see the shards of glass that had been discarded right here by disrespectful humans over the summer. I ran right on top of them, cutting up both of my back paws and my gettin a big piece stuck in my right front paw. I cried out and stopped running, sitting down with my back legs pushed to the side instead of underneath me. I bent my head and started licking the blood off. I lifted my right paw up off the ground, grasping the glass with my teeth and pulling it out, whimpering slightly. I limped over to the very edge of the pond, sighing as the cool water soothed my aching, bloody paws. I slowly fell asleep to the soft sounds of the tweeting birds around me...
I was screaming... Screaming and howling, though I didn't know why. I couldn't see myself, but I knew it was me. Everything was black. I couldn't see a thing. I inhaled deeply and...
I woke up with a start, jumping to my paws and then crying out in pain. It was burning hot, which it shouldn't be in the winter. I opened my eyes, and there was fire everywhere. I was startled and quite in shock, so it me a minute to react. When I did, it was pure panic. With panic blinding my common sense, I forgot about the pond I was practically standing in. Blindingly, I ran straight into the fire, looking for a way out. Everything went dark and...
The last thing I remember was fire. Fire everywhere. The worst thing I could possible imagine. I had no clue where I was now. I felt stiff and grossly sticky and clean. Everything even smelt clean, in fact. I could smell some type of animal, but without blood and meat. Almost like it was just the hide...
I came to and opened my eyes. I felt groggy and awkward and my vision was blurry an unclear. After about thirty minutes, I'd say, of continuous blinking, it was finally clear. I was taken aback when I realized I was lying on the floor of a humans house. I was spread across this big fuzzy square that I've seen humans carrying many times in the winter, though I wasn't sure what to call it. I realized that I had smelt a deer head up on the wall. Suddenly, a human woman came into the room and I stood up quickly, only to get light-headed and dizzy and fall back down. When I say back down, I looked at my paws, and the three of them that had been cut by the glass had little bandages on them that had been shaped into little booties to cover my paws. She came over to stand at the edge of my fuzzy square an whisper soft little things. She continued that for a few minutes before I slowly stood up again, feeling better. She opened the front door and I padded out. She walked out behind me and closed the door, before lifting my up into the back of her truck. It was an awkward feeling, but I let her, because I knew she was taking me home and wouldn't hurt me.
We arrived at the mountain and I jumped out over the tail-gate before he could even park the truck. I turned around and looked at her over my shoulder, giving her a nod of my appreciation and gratefulness for saving me. I started to run back to my shelter, which had lots of soot in places, but it looked like humans had tried to clean it up. I looked down at my paws while running, for they felt extremely weird and I couldn'f feel the ground below me, but I wasn't going to take them off until I was sure my paws were better. I realized suddenly that the glass had been removed and that small spot smelt like the human who helped me earlier.
I never could remember what happened between cutting my paws and waking up in a human house. I did know that now I am at better terms with the humans in the mountain, and I have never returned to the bottom of the mountain during winter, because I trust these humans more. I'm still afraid of fire, though, even more-so I used to be, but that's just fine. My paws are in the best condition they've ever been, and the bandages have de-composed into the ground. Whenever a human sees me, they call me Dea, because I survived the fires and they had heard that I was the one who had been rescued by the woman and didn't hurt her.
