I smiled as the girl introduced herself. "It's very nice to meet you as well, Nika. If you're going into the park, I would watch out for the guy with the frisbee and dog. He isn't a very good aim." I chuckled a little bit and sighed, taking in a deep breath of the fresh air. It was wonderful in this town. The seasons weren't extreme and the flora and fauna were different than Japan. I also loved not having fangirls squee everywhere I went, and I no longer received fan mail. This was the perfect life.

Nika smiled. "That sounds like good information. I'll be sure to give him a wide berth." She tilted her head to the side a bit, and studied him closely. "Your accent already tells me, but your not from around here, da?" She bit her lip. Her mom always said 'da' when she finished a sentence with a question, usually replacing the word 'right'. It had become a habit for Nika as well, one she had worked years to break. It seemed helpless, though, and part of her didn't even care anymore.

Mark was in the middle of an intense scene in his book that had yet to move from his notebook to a more permanent binding when he thought he saw movement out of the corner of his eye. He licked his lips nervously when, glancing over without moving his head, he realized that there were two girls walking towards him. There was a girl with white hair and another with dark brown hair that was only a shade or two away from being black. He moved around uncomfortably for a moment, looking down at the papers in front of him that were already covered in writing or ideas scratched in on the margins as if by focusing on them so carefully, the girls might go away. He licked his lips once more, noticing that his right index finger was twitching like it normally did when he was getting nervous. There was still time for them to leave. Maybe they were just walking by. People did that in parks, walked. They didn't have to be walking towards him.

But with each passing second, Mark gave up with that hope and realized that they were heading straight for him. He curled his right hand into a loose fist, shifting his position self-consciously while his left hand casually moved over his paper to cover up at least a portion of his writing so they couldn't read it. He looked down at that hand, making sure the words on his wrist weren't visible. Sometimes he wondered why he wrote them if it just made him even more shy. But it seemed to help him, or at least remind his subconscious to trick him into thinking that it did, so he kept them there despite the embarrassment it caused him every once in a while.

Only just realizing that he was still listening to his iPod - he was so freaked out that he wasn't aware of anything except how his palms were getting sweaty - Mark carefully took out the earbuds in his ears and put his iPod away while trying to appear like he had no idea that they were walking towards him. He was just a normal guy, relaxing at the park and writing in a notebook. He was calm and cool and relaxed. Unfortunately, telling himself something didn't make it true.

As I approached the picnic table, I shook some hair out of my face and looked over at the kid. He seemed... nervous, maybe scared. All I could see was half of a notebook that he seemed to be hiding. Was it like a diary? Strange. But strange was good so maybe he would want to join us on our quest. Trying to be friendly, I smiled at him a bit as I sat down across from him. "Hello there. We were wondering, do you know anything about the abandoned mines up in the mountains behind the park?" I nodded my head backwards towards the mountain range.

Image

I smiled a bit. I could probably trust this girl with my lineage, seeing as how she didn't recognize my face and name. "No, I'm not. My father is British and my mum is Japanese. Somehow I managed to speak both languages in a British accent. It's sort of funny." I said a phrase in the Japanese language with a British accent before smiling. "Pretty weird, huh?" I leaned back against a fence post, gazing around the park. "So I haven't lived here very long. Is there something that's like, the 'hot thing' to do in this town?"

Acacia Evalinn

Acacia followed Danika's gaze to a guy sitting at a table alone, seeming to be writing in a notebook. She watched him for a second and nodded, before realizing that the girl was already heading towards him. With a small jolt she jogged back to her until she was only a step or two behind. Her gaze went from the boy to the trees constantly, as she didn't want to just stare at him and burn a hole through his head. The closer they got, the more he shifted positions and moved in small ways. When he removed the earbuds from his ears she let out a small breath of relief, as she hadn't even noticed them. It might have irritated him if they just sat down and started speaking to him while he was so obviously listening to music.
As Danika sat down, Acacia moved to one of the other sides of the table and took a seat, giving a small smile to try and be friendly without looking overly excited. Wouldn't want to freak him out. Acacia looked back up at the mountain as Danika spoke, eyebrows knit in curiosity. Hopefully this goes over well. she thought, turning back to look at the boy who seemed to be growing increasingly nervous. I would be too if two strangers came up to me in a park and asked about some random secluded place.

"British accent when speaking Japanese?" She grinned. "I don't think I've heard anything cooler. I was born in Russia, raised there until I was three before moving here." She listened to him as he spoke in Japanese, and rolled her eyes while grinning. "Way weird, but still cool."
She shrugged at his question. "Well, there is the abandoned mines. I've always wanted to go there, ever sense I was four or five. But I've heard time and time again that its really dangerous, and mom always warned me not to go into them." She sighed and leaned up against the post next to him, and studied the sky. "So I guess you could consider the mines the 'hot thing', da?" Again with the da. Whatever, he didn't even seem to notice, which made her happy. It got annoying after people commented on it day after day, after years of living here. "It would be fun, exploring them. Even the younger teens stay away from there, so we would be the first to explore them after... years. Mayhaps even decades."

Mark nervously swallowed when the girl finally reached him, cursing puberty because he knew that his Adam's apple, although not very prominent, had to be bouncing up and down. He tried to return the smiles that they gave him when they sat down across from him, but he was pretty sure that it just made him look like he was grimacing. He hoped that they didn't think he actually was wincing because of their presence. He felt a blush creeping up his neck when he thought of that and begged his body not to give away his embarrassment so easily. Part of him was also curious - why were these girls coming over to sit by him? He was certain that he didn't seem approachable, so why did they go out of their way to come say hello?

When Mark received the answer to his question, he blinked in surprise while his mind scrambled to find something clever to say. Why were they wondering about the old mines? They were there, no one used them anymore, and there were some funny rumors about that place - what else was there to know? Wondering why they were asking something like that didn't help him with his mental quest to find something to say other than a simple no.

Realizing that a second or two had passed and he needed to say something or else they might think he was horribly weird, he grinned nervously and shook his head while saying, "O-only tha-that th-th-they're a-aband-abandoned." Mark's blush took over not only his neck but his face now, too, and he looked down at his notebook, casually closing it as if signifying that he was willing to spend some time chatting with them when it was really to ensure that they couldn't see any words. He was pretty sure that the action was less informal than he'd planned and was likely awkward.

Mark shuffled his feet underneath the table, stopping abruptly when his toe hit something. Assuming that it was one of their feet, he mumbled an apology before realizing that his foot was nowhere near theirs - he'd likely hit a rock or the side or the picnic table or something. His blood chilling in fear, he muttered a quiet, "Nevermind," before dropping his hands to his lap so that he could hide his trembling fingers from their gaze.

Ignoring the fact that the boy seemed nervous, I kept right on going. "That's all? Huh. Well how would you be interested in joining us to go learn more about them? I am rather bored around here and need some adventure. You seem sort of bored too, so you wanna join us? I'm Danika, by the way, and this is Acacia." So far he hadn't mentioned my eyepatch, which was nice for once. Maybe he wasn't so bad. He seemed to grow increasingly nervous though. "Hey, you don't have to be scared of us. Yeah, I can be sort of intimidating with the way I act, but I'm not going to hurt you. I just want to recruit you for out adventure."

Image

As Nika talked about the mines, a small smile crept across my face. Abandoned mines, huh? Well that is definitely different than my hometown experiences... I nodded as she spoke. "That sounds like an adventure. I've never been anywhere like that, since I grew up in Tokyo my entire life. However, I do rather enjoy being outside a lot and going on adventures. Perhaps we should talk more about this. Join me at a picnic table?" I nodded over towards them and started walking slowly towards the tables, choosing an empty one, near another table that had two girls and another guy at it. As I sat, I clasped my hands together and held them up before my face, my elbows resting on the table. A glint went through my eye. "So, what do you know about these mines?"

Nika nodded in agreement and let him lead the way to a table. She sat down next to him, paying no mind to the other table and it's occupants. "Well... there's stories about them. Legends. They scare everyone here, especially the story of the four foot spiders." She shuddered. "I don't know how old the story is, but I do know it's very old. Pro'ly been stretched and messed with, but there might be hints of truth." She closed her eyes tight and leaning her elbows on the table, resting her head on her hands. "I hate spiders. They scare me so bad." She shook her head, eyes still closed, as if to get the image out of her head. "Anyway," She opened her eyes and gave Len a small smile. "They've boarded up the entry. I like to walk down the trail towards it, and look at the door, but I never ever go closer then, like, eleven yards or something. There's plenty of signs leading up to it, warning those who walk the trail to turn back, turn around while you can. Saying things like 'Off Limits' and even a 'Beware of Dogs'." Her smile fell a little. "It's creepy, though. Like there's something going on past the boards." She sighed and pressed her wrists to her temples, once again closing her eyes. "Thats about all I know." She hesitated. "I still want to go in them. I'm just a bit scared to go in all by myself. It's kinda like going into the basement or attic. You never want to go alone."

((X3 She talked a lot. For some reason, I feel like it was to much. Oh well, you will have to live with it. Muahaha. Muahahahaha!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAA!!!!! ... I'm over it.))

The way the girl just plowed right on ahead made Mark even more nervous. Did she expect him to move along at the same quick pace that she was going? Did she expect him to be as informal and open as she was? If that was the case, she'd find out soon enough that that wasn't about to happen in the near future. He wouldn't up and leave or anything, because that would be horribly rude and it was ingrained into his mind not to be impolite from a young age, but he might sit there and reply with as few words as possible until she got bored and made up some sort of excuse before she left him alone. She sure seemed like someone in the fast lane to him - she'd let him be soon, wouldn't she? Her and her friend would leave soon, right? Or at least before his heart beat right out of his chest?

The questions she went on to ask made him even more uncertain, his shy side winning out over his curiosity like it normally did. Going to go check out those creepy mines didn't sound like a very good idea to him. Not only did it involve stepping into the unknown, but it also meant that he'd have to talk to these two girls even more. From what he'd seen of them, which was their hair color from a distance and from their lips down because he was too afraid to meet their eyes, they seemed like pretty girls. Getting to talk to both of them alone was something that most guys his age would volunteer for, but he was afraid he'd do something stupid. Not to mention that he didn't trust them. He didn't really trust any girls anymore, really.

Hearing her introduction that came quite a bit late, Mark opened his mouth to tell them what his name was until she kept talking again. He shut his mouth and clenched his jaw, certain that he looked like a fish with his mouth opening and closing like it just had and wishing every person in the world was as quiet as this Danika's friend was - Acacia. When Danika offered him consoling words, he looked up from the table so that he was looking at her chin, afraid to look up any further. He was shy and self-conscious, yes, but he was a guy and he still had his pride. "I-I'm not a-afraid o-o-of you," he said in what would be a firm way if it wasn't for his stammering. He wasn't lying to them, either. He wasn't afraid of them, he was afraid that he'd make a fool of himself. Because he felt like the two girls would think he was a loser if he said no, he added on, "A-and I'll - I'll g-go wi-with you." Mark looked down at the badly painted surface of the table again, knowing that they had to be wondering what his probem was now and hoping they wouldn't decide he was a freak that they should avoid.
