Coyote bit his lip with impatience. That woman asked too many questions for his liking, and the need to get going was burning like a cattle brand in his side.
"It'sa no insult to yew, ma'am. I jest might not come back. If I kin help it I will. Shawnee there is th' best mule I ever 'ad and I don't plan on jest leavin' 'er here." he leaned in closer to her and dropped his voice to a whisper, "There's always the chance somebody might stir up a fight with me. Always a chance of bein' kil't out in this crazy town, y'here? So I'm jest warnin yew."
Coyote chose his words carefully, trying to express to Viletta the very real possibility of him disappearing, but trying not to let on that he was a wanted man. He made it sound as if the "crazy", lawless townsfolk would be at fault if he wound up dead, not his own crimes.

[I suspect there's going to be some amount of barfighting involved. Black Billy is going to have a hand in that, as well.]

Now that the sun had set and the summer night was cooling down, Jack decided that it would be better to work for a couple of hours and get a chance at sleeping in the hayloft behind the town's hotel. He had been riding hard the last couple of days and a bed of straw sounded just fine. Leading his horse, the man strode to the front of the two-story and tied her to a post, then walked inside. A man was cleaning glasses behind the bar and Jack sauntered over to him, asking as he went, "Is there any chance of working for a place to sleep tonight?" The barkeeper looked him up and down, then moved the wad of tobacco he was chewing into his cheek so that he could speak properly. "If yah feel up to washin' dishes, there's certainly a place for yah." Jack took a second to consider this, then shrugged. Dishwashing was a woman's job, but hell, if it got him a place to sleep- why not? "If I can tie up my horse out back, too, then we've got a deal." The barkeeper nodded and went back to wiping the glasses with a rag. Jack turned around and went back outside, untying his mare and leading her towards the side of the stone-and-wood building.

-Emerald Antoinette-
Emerald stumbled slightly as she walked through town, Diablo barely able to keep up with her. Nobody would help her. Nobody would help Diablo. She wasn't sure what kind of snake Diablo had been bit by, but she wanted to help him. He was the only thing she had left. As she passed the hotel she saw a man, Jack, leading his horse around back. Even though she expected to be turned down again, she decided to ask for help any way. "Excuse me, Sir?" she called, the exhaustion clear in her face and voice. "My horse, he got bit by a snake. I don't know if it was a rattler or not....can you help me? Please?"

Jack heard a woman's voice calling him, and turned around. He looked at the stallion that was stumbling along behind the girl, and sighed. Then he dropped his mare's reins and reached into the holster at his right hip, drawing out a pistol. "Yes, ma'am, I do believe I can help you," he replied, checking the pistol to make sure there was a bullet in it. "Stand out of the way, please." He didn't lift the gun just yet; accidents happened, and murder was not one of the things that would help him gather a posse to find his sister. It really was too bad that the woman's horse was snakebit; he was a fine young stallion, to be sure.

For a moment, Emerald's eyes glittered with hope and relief. He would help her! But when she saw him pull out the gun, she frowned and stood in front of Diablo. "No, please. There has to be another way." But the more she thought about it, the more she started to realize that he was right. There was nothing anybody could do. Her beloved Diablo could either die a slow, painful death, or this man could put him out of his misery. She bit her lip, lowering her head so the brim of her hat hung in front of her eyes. She couldn't have this stranger see how much this was going to hurt her. She took a deep breath and walked over to Diablo's neck, stroking his mane before taking her knife and cutting a few strands off. "I'm sorry, Diablo." she whispered, sheathing her knife again and stepping back. "I'm sorry."

Jack raised his gun and leveled it, then pulled back the hammer and fired. His aim was good, but it took another shot to fully kill the stallion. The horse screamed a dropped, but he was dead before he hit the ground.

The tall man holstered his gun and looked at the woman. He didn't say anything, but there was an apology in his eyes. Then he turned away and took his mare's reins again, leading her around the back. He could only think of his first horse, a sweet-tempered gelding who had been a gift from his... well, it must have been one of his uncles, but he couldn't seem to recall which one. He remembered the gelding's name, though. Ginger. My, he was fine. A strawberry roan with a white blaze running from nose to ears. He died, though. Jack had been maybe ten at the time. He couldn't remember if Ginger had been bit, or got sick, or broken a leg, but he did know that his father had gone out to the barn one cold September morning with his shotgun. Doves had flown out of the eaves when it was fired. The young Jack had thought it fitting. Mourning doves for a dead horse.

The man shook his head, clearing away those pesky thoughts. Deaths came and went, that was how things worked. He was lucky it wasn't somebody else, like his mother. Or his sister. His fist clenched tighter around the reins as he pushed open the door of the stables. His sister was out there somewhere, maybe dead, maybe dying. He had to find her. She was all he had left.

[Yeah, she's fine. A little town near a spring in the desert of California, that's where everyone is sort of congregating. There's about to be a showdown of sorts.]

-Emerald Antoinette-
Emerald squeezed her eyes shut as Jack fired the gun. She heard a thud in the dirt as Diablo dropped to the ground and let a single tear silently run down her cheek. And there went the only thing she had left. Her poor Diablo. He was her first horse, one her father had paid a fine amount for. She had raised the boy since he was a colt, trained him. Nothing could separate them, except death. Death could separate anyone from anything. Not able to look at Diablo's dead body, she followed Jack, wiping away her tears. "Thanks....I wouldn't of been able to do that myself." she said quietly, her voice sad, keeping her gaze down at her boots. "I'm Emerald, by the way."

"Yeah, I figured," replied the man, shoving the door of the stable open with his shoulder. He led his mare through and picked an out-of-the-way stall for her, so that anybody important coming in would have their pick without having to worry about their horses getting into a tussle with his girl.

When the woman told him what her name was, he was too busy unsaddling his mare to look at her. Instead he replied, "Jack. Jack Aubrey." He settled the saddle on the wall of the stall and hung his mare's bit and bridle over it. Then he searched for grooming tools, but couldn't find any. "Sorry our introductions had to start with me shooting your horse. Help me find a brush, will you?"
