Birds flittered through the trees, shaking the leaves and scattering smaller animals. Canada sat still on the ground, the only constant figure in the woods around him. He closed his eyes and sighed, wishing he could stay as he was for th rest of the day, perhaps even forever. He would much rather do anything else than go to the town square today, and wonder if the odds would be in his favor. Canada gave a silent prayer, hoping beyond hope that France, Britain, or America would not be chosen. If that happened....Matthew didn't know what he would do. The grief would drive him mad, that much was certain. Trying to distract himself from such thoughts, Canada glanced around the woods, looking for Rhyme. They usually met at this spot everyday, and the girl was a bit later than usual.

Germany sat in still silence on a dusty chair in an abandoned drinking hall located in what used to be known as Berlin but was now just another part of District 3. His normally bright blue eyes held a dull yet steely look to them as he stared unseeingly at what was left of his favorite place to get a beer. He used to come here all the time with his older brother when he was tired, worried, angry, or needed a break from his daily routine of running his country. Prussia always knew how to cheer up his younger brother with a nice, cold mug of beer to calm the nerves.
The once vibrant and open hall now only welcomed the spiders that crawled throughout the dead walls of the building, reminding him of the present times. Upturned chairs and fallen tables littered the room along with broken bottles that remained where they had fallen, in shatters. It was no longer a place full of loud noises and happy laughter, but a painful memory book of the days when Panem took it all. Each reaping, before and after, the broken country came and relived the past days in this old hall. He came and watched it all; through the beginning to this horrible end, blaming himself for not seeing. How could he not've seen the danger she was? He could've prevented all of this suffering, all these death games, but he had been blinded like everyone else to her true nature.
Another reaping, another family torn apart. Countless people hurt by this madness. My people. And there's nothing I can do to save them. I'm supposed to be their protector, but I've failed them. I'm so sorry. Tears streamed down his weary face as he hit his fist to an upturned table, the noise of the collision with the floor jarring him back to reality. "It von't be long now. Ze reaping iz near. Ve'll make it zrough zis like ve alvays do, but zere von't be anozer reaping on my people after zis year. I svear it," he vowed aloud as he looked around the hall and wiped the damp from his face before striding out of the building. Yes. He could save them. Not now perhaps, but come the next reaping he would be ready to fight with tooth and nail for his once strong country. Or die trying.
