Merry stepped forward a few inches, curious for a closer look but not curious enough to touch the dragon without asking. He was no longer scared by the animal, but rather intrigued. Legolas kept a sharp eye on both hobbits, as he had a respect for these dragons that were apparently his neighbors that he had never known about.

Theoden wrote:Where now are the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the harp on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.
Who shall gather the smoke of the deadwood burning,
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?

Sharpclaw lowered his head a bit more, making a soft chirring noise, then gently rubbed his head against Merry's hand in a catlike manner, giving a deep, rumbling purr. "I don't think that really needs translating." Nightshade turned toward Pippin, sitting down and curling her tail around her paws. "You're right that he isn't dead, but he isn't exactly alive either. He's a very rare kind of dragon that goes by several names, including undead dragons and necromancer dragons. No one really understands why, but if a shadow dragon egg is going to hatch on the day of a solar eclipse, something happens to the baby dragon inside.
It's born dead, but still hatches and grows. That explains how it's possible for him to be my brother, even though he looks almost nothing like me. Most shadow dragons avoid the undead dragons, fearing them, because by rights they should be dead. An undead dragon is a useful ally in battle, because it's nearly impossible to destroy one. As you've seen, the bones can be separated without harming the dragon, and they don't feel pain. Any broken bones will eventually mend themselves, and no matter how far apart you put them, they'll reassemble eventually. It takes a very powerful spell to permanantly destroy an undead dragon, and all you can do otherwise is slow them down."

(huh, that's good! Mine isn't.)
Merry smiled and rubbed Sharpclaw's scaly skull, his fingers tingling from the weird sensation and texture. "So do you live forever, or can these undead dragons just die of old age?" he asked, now very interested in the history and science lesson he was getting. "Because otherwise there ought to be lots of these guys flying around."

Pippin listened to all the information, his eyes widening.
"Wow...." was the only thing he could whisper "And how did he get here so suddenly?" he stared at the dragon in disbelief, totally astonished.
Aragorn smiled. A battle would be much easier to win with these undead dragons. And he liked them, though the only time he had ever seen them before was the skeleton of Smaug.
((Ughh... how can you write so much? And did you come up with the whole idea of shadow dragons and undead dragons? If you did, you have the best imagination here! I'm finding my writing rubbish today, I don't know what's wrong with me

(shadow dragons are something I've been using in various roleplays for six months, and undead dragons actually came to me in a very strange dream. I've seen people who type five paragraphs a post, every time! I can't do that, but on my good days my fingers just get carried away, and I keep misspelling things, in fact, because I'm typing so fast. I have those 'no ideas' days too, don't worry)
Sharpclaw purred, pressing his head against Merry's hand, as a cat would. "You'd think there'd be a lot, but since the conditions required to change a normal baby dragon into an undead are very specific, only about one undead dragon is hatched in a hundred years, if that. It's thought that an undead could live forever, but most of them seem to get tired of 'living' after a while, and 'die' of their own will, although they don't exactly die, being dead already. By 'a while' I mean something like three thousand years." Sharpclaw glanced over at Pippin, growling again. "He says he was already here, just asleep, and all the noise woke him up. He left the Shadow Forest several months before I did, because he was tired of being treated like he was about to attack someone."

Merry nodded, understanding it. The Shirefolk had looked at the four famous hobbits kind of like that after they returned from the War, because they had done something adventurous and strange. Legolas crossed his arms and looked at Nightshade. "Then that is like us, the Eldar. Death does not happen, but we leave of our own accord when we are tired of living, and go to the halls of Mandos."

Sharpclaw nodded, still rubbing his head against Merry's hand, loving his touch. Usually most living things avoided him, frightened of this dragon that should be dead. Nightshade looked over at Legolas, nodding. "That's about it. That's only for undeads, though. Shadow dragons usually live to about three hundred. Now a big dragon, like Smaug, can live to be thousands of years old."

Legolas nodded and kept that in mind. "Well, now that we have disposed of our foul friends, shall we continue?" He gestured to Pippin to come with him and he mounted his horse, reaching down to help Pippin up if he needed it.
