I'd definitely join - as long as there was an actual plot.

Hi everyone! I'm glad to be here and I'm looking forward to meeting you all and having some good discussions on RPing.

I ditto the statements above. There does seem to be a dearth of good RPs out there. And even some of the good ones end in ruin after only a few short months, way before their time. Which begs the question, why?

Since so many of us are looking to join an RP or start up our own RP in the near future, I thought it would be interesting and hopefully enlightening to try and figure out why so many RPs fail.

Is it lack of plotting? Lack of preparation or maybe upkeep? Is it lack of time spent writing by the members? Is it too many or too few rules? Is it slow story progression? Is it too few or too many writers or characters?

Since I too am thinking about starting up my own RP in the near future, and since I have little experience at running an RP, I was wondering if any of you would tell me your ideas of what makes for a good RP (not so much the subject or genre, but more the mechanics and rules), and also what makes good RPs fail. That way, hopefully, I, and others, can avoid some of these pitfalls.

I know that in my short RPing time on CS I have already seen some things that have caused trouble. These are a few things that come to mind...

1. Lack of any rules or expectations as far as posting requirements or etiquette.
So members posted irregularly and some posted one liners consistently while others posted paragraphs consistently, which made for an unbalanced presentation of the characters. Some writers would disappear for a week, leaving other writers' characters stranded in frozen scenes, instead of writing their characters out of the scene before they left on vacation or whatever.
2. Lack of a well defined setting.
So people were left with a lot of questions as to where this or that was, and is such and such available to us or not? Also, writers weren't sure how much leeway they had to create the setting because nothing had been stated in regard to the freedoms they had in creating the world and the NPCs around them.
3. Lack of story management and pacing from the GM.
This allowed the story progression to bog down, and multiple tangents to veer off into their own storylines, thereby losing track of the main storyline (assuming the GM had even plotted one out, which is another problem altogether - the never-climaxing, never-ending RP).
4. Lack of willingness on the part of some writers to keep up with reading what other writers had posted.
Some writers would constantly ask for recaps instead of reading back a day or two themselves. Seems to me like all the writers should keep as up to date as they can on what has been written, even the details, which is essentially the history of the story. Otherwise how can they really ever get to know their fellow characters and gain an understanding of where the story has been and where it's going? It would be like reading a book's outline and chapter summaries but not the actual body text. It's no wonder some people would lose interest after awhile of doing that.

These are some of the issues I have seen anyway. What else have you all seen that might have led to RP failure that hopefully we can avoid doing in our own RPs? Maybe we can come up with a master list of Do's and Don'ts for CS RPers. Even the RP schools don't really address these issues. They concentrate mainly on cultivating a writer's ability to write a good paragraph, not on how to run a good RP. It seems to me that we should START with that.

Just some thoughts. I would love to hear from any and all of you on this matter. :) Thanks!

Favorite type of RP: I'm really into wolf roleplays, however zombie apocalypse roleplays are a close second. Also, at times I will join a warrior cat roleplay, though I'm no longer a part of many.~ (~keep that in mind.~)
Sample of writing:

Ex. 1:

~ɛʌαи~

A pained chuckle escaped Evan's throat and he shook his head, wincing as pain shot up his neck. His breath was coming out in wheezig gasps, his jet-black flank barely rising and falling with each breath. In the back of the Alpha's mind, he knew that with each passing moment he was just a moment closer to death. A small smile spread across Evan's face and he gazed down at Jet who lay crushed beneath him. But at least I got to die with the one I love. he thought, taking in a large shuddering breath.
Tears cascaded down Evan's cheeks and he pressed himself against Jet in a loving gesture. To be honest, he didn't want to die yet. He wanted to live with Jet and rule Kaibutsu, he wanted to wake each day next and fall asleep with the one he loved, he wanted to watch his Pack thrive under his watchful gaze. Sadness overflowed Evan and slightly worsened the pain as he fought to keep his eyes open. I never even got to raise puppies with Jet yet... he thought sadly, letting a single tear roll down his cheek and fall onto Jet's face. His breaths gradually grew weaker, and Evan managed to choke out a few words, "I love you, Jet."
Finally, Evan took his last breath and his flank stopped moving. His eyelids fluttered closed, never again to open and reveal those ice-blue eyes of his. The wind blew at Evan's jet-black fur, causing it to whisk and dance. For a moment, the cold night breeze almost made it seem as though Evan's flank was still moving, but it was not. The great Kaibutsu leader had finally fallen.~

Ex. 2:

~cяαƨн~

Crash's ears were flattened back as she dragged Emma through the meadow, her eyes focused on the field ahead. The scent of the herd still wreathed in the air, and Crash's even pawsteps faltered as her gaze shifted down to fall upon Emma. Had she not had gotten sidetracked by Chiyo, then Emma wouldn't have had to catch the buck all by herself. Thus, she would have never gotten injured. Somewhere in the recesses of her heart, Crash could feel guilt pricking mercilessely at it and she whined, muffled by Emma's scruff. It's my fault... she thought, lowering her head in dismay and squeezing her eyes shut.
Suddenly, Crash opened her eyes and growled, lifting her head. After giving herself a quick shake, she continued to pull Emma through the field. She couldn't let her own sadness and self-pity get in the way of what was really important; Emma's well-being. Crash didn't want to spend her days having this guilt loom over her like a dark cloud- she had to get Emma to safety. Why? Because she was Crash, and that's what Crash did.
Crash suddenly felt the ground under her paws begin to slope upwards and she cast a quick glance behind her. She then realized that she had made it to the slope, which lead back to the forest. Crash turned her head back 'round and narrowed her eyes in determination, taking a careful pawstep back. Her paws scrabbled at the slippery texture and she gasped, digging her claws into the soft soil for duration. Once she was sure she could hold on, Crash began to slowly drag Emma upwards, never stopping once. Her gaze fell upon the ae she was carrying and a soft whimper emitted her throat. Don't worry, Emma. she thought, running her tongue over Emma's scruff fur. I'll take care of you...
Finally, Crash began to feel the ground grow more even and sturdy underpaw. She cast a glance upward to see trees were beginning to surround her once more, telling her that she was back in the forest. Her tail whisked over the familiar ground and she flicked her left ear, dragging Emma away from the abandoned meadow. The thick pine trees began to thicken around her, engulfing the two in a litter of leaves and branches. Crash paused and brought her head down, letting go of Emma's scruff momentarily. As she lifted her head back up, she spat out some of Emma's scruff hair as she looked 'round her surroundings. Sunlight filtered from the treetops, casting it's golden rays spilling onto the forest floor. Through the light, Crash could spot a single tree off into the distance and she squinted her eyes. It was a single pine tree; large in size, and hollowed out inside. A wolfish grin crossed Crash's face and her tail swished happily. "Perfect." she whispered, bringing her head back down and grabbing Emma's scruff once more. With a grunt, she took a heaving pawstep backwards, hauling Emma along the leaf-littered forest floor. The leaves shuffled and hissed under Emma's unconscious body, sending shivering ripples through the surrounding leaves. Crash dragged Emma graudually to the hollow tree, bringing her inside.
Once inside, Crash released Emma's scruff and looked around the hollow tree, eyes swirling with curiousity. It was so big, and overhead the tree seem to skyrocket upward forever. Crash looked back down at Emma and sighed, laying down beside the fallen fae. She gently placed her paw atop Emma's and wrapped her tail around the fae protectively, careful to avoid the bruise on her stomach. She then gently rested her head atop Emma's and sighed, closing her eyes. "You'll be just fine, Emma." she whispered, licking the fae's forehead. "You'll be just fine..."

~

Crash suddenly jerked awake by the feeling of movement beside her. Emma was beginning to stir, a moan emitting from the fae's throat. Crash looked downa and realized the compromising position she was in with her and her eyes widened with horror. She sprang to her paws, shaking out her fur frantically and sitting down with her back turned to Emma. Crash felt heat beginning to rise in her cheeks and she swallowed hard, trying to force it down. "What happened, Crash?"
Emma's soft voice sliced through the air like a knife and Crash closed her eyes briefly, taking in a deep breath. Hoping that the blush was erased, she rose to her paws and spun on her heels, padding to Emma. "You tried taking down that buck all by yourself." she explained quietly, bending down to nuzzle Emma's belly wound. As soon as her nose came in contact with the bruise, Crash could feel Emma wincing with each breath she took. Guilt washed over her and she closed her eyes briefly, running her smooth tongue over the wound. "You were in so much pain that you passed out."

(~Note: My posts can range in length from example 1 to example 2. I didn't know which would be a better example, so I used both. C:~)

The world now lives in darkness; the time for humans has come.

Let’s go back a few centuries ago, when humans lived in “peace”, when they only had small fights for useless territory, and all they did was bathed in blood. That’s the time when all started. You weren’t born, even the elders cannot remember those times of “happiness”. Because compared to this, that was happiness and peace.
This is war.

The year is 2061. The crisis from decades ago is still present, killing people, letting them die slowly, but quietly, hungry and cold. When the governments thought it was gone, that they got over it, it stoke back again. This led them to new laws, but the most striking one stated that, to get to a solution for the crisis, they’d set a new social status based on the knowledge and the physical characteristics of a person; but they couldn’t imagine what this would lead to. oon, the most genetically graced people decided to "unite": the rest of the society didn't matter, only them. Their descendants inherited their parent’s abilities: they were far cleverer, agile, strong; a whole new breed. They were called by the humans "Experiments"; they called themselves "Optimei", the golden race. Humans started a war against them, trying to get back the power, to hide them in cells, but they were better, faster. Humans soon started to disappear, the Optimei first tried to be discrete: poisoning rivers, supplies, air, stealing medicines and releasing new laboratory viruses. But when humans tried to fight back with the few weapons they had left, the Optimei chased them down, in the forest, in their houses, in their own cities.
Now it's year 4211, more than two centuries later, and the whole Optimei race domains the world. Few human colonies resist, hidden in inaccessible places, where no one would bother to search. They are no longer necessary, they have replaced them. Humans are now in the jungle, just a few thousands of them, while others live in the catacombs of the biggest cities, as prisoners. Every year, some of those humans are executed, but once every four years, there’s a big event: a maze. Humans between the aged 14 to 25 are sent to an "arena". There, they’ll make teams, alliances, friends and even love, but they’ll have to fight for food, water, supplies and medicines. They’ll have to kill each other, until only two remain.

Those are the winners; the rest are losers.

The brute awoke from his long nap. He was curled up in a tight little ball with his tail touching his nose. When he breathed it would tickle the inside of his nose. Much off a burden for wolves. He looked up and moved his fiery red tail over to the side. He looked up with sleepy gazed eyes. They were cloudy like dark rain clouds. They were always like that when he woke up. He slowly stood up then yawned and stretched at the same time. His stomach let out a deep dark growl. Red looked mad becuase pack rules had a strick policy of omegas cannot eat out of the kill pile. He looked around as the sun reflected of his pelt casting a fire glow on every thing. He sniffed the air to see if any prey was around.
He smelled deer and smiled. He could sence an elder lingering at the back of the herd as they moved away from the two territories. The herd was on the edge of the rival territory so he had to be careful not to step a paw on there territory. He stood up and on quiet paw padds trotted over into the deep forest where he smelled them. He saw them deep in the distance and let out a deep quiet growl. He stayed down wind and stalked them. He slowly wtched them as he spotted his prey. He chraged toward it once he got close enough. He jumped on the back and it fell to the ground. He quickly padded up to it's neck and bit into it's wind pipe and bit into it killing it instantly. He went to the does hind leg and bit into it enjoying it's nice juicy meat.
The blood spewed all over his muzzle but he didn't care. It basicly blended in but it was a darker red then his pelt. He curled up around the does lifless carcass and bit into a meatier part. He tore it off then began to chew with his canine teeth. He finally chewed off all of the does good meat from it's right leg. He walked around to it's stomach the nuzzled his muzzle under it's body. He flipped it over yet, it was hard. He almost pulled a shoulder muscle strianing to turn it over. He walked over proudly to it's hind leg and smiled drooling. He took a hold of the leg and jumped over the lifless carcass tearing the leg off. He layed down and put his paw over it. He bit into the meatiest part agian then got an idea "If I take this back to my den, then I won't have to hunt so often!" He shooke his hea in dissaproval. "Alpha won't let me" He said niting into the deer's leg once more.

I have to thank you for asking this, since I have indeed wondered why so many roleplays (particularly mine) fail. I think it's probably got a lot to do with word/line limits and effort levels, but also the point that some plots are more popluar than others (which is probably why mine fail). I have noticed that roleplays with a lower line/word limit tend to last longer, probably since people don't think it's an effort to keep going, that way when they think they need to lower the effort they are putting into roleplays, the ones with lower line limits stay. But having ones that are too fast moving is another difficulty, since people will get lost, and ask for recaps. (Which I could understand if the roleplay had gone more than five or six pages from when they were last on, but not just a couple posts. Thing like vacations do happen to get in the way of roleplaying sometimes, so you do have to be understanding and give recaps when they are really needed. Otherwise they will just not come back if they have to leave for a while.) So really it is a fine balance of the number of people (I find this to often be a problem, since too many means too many people being left in the dust but too few leaves people all alone with nobody to talk to.), the amount required in each post, and how dedicated people are. Not to even get started on finding the right themes and plots.

Anyways, that's just what I've gathered, if you could find a way to make a 'perfect' (Perfect meaning not one that dies or flops)roleplay where people actually come and stay, do tell me the secret to your success. I'm interested to see what others think as well.

Starbase Typhon is a roleplay run by me, off site. It is Star Trek based (but not the new movies, as you will see) and it definetly needs people who are willing to be active, write with great grammar, and of course, are semi-literate or above. Format is play by Nova, which involves multi-person posts that are a different way of doing things that here of CS. But it's lots of fun, and we need long term people who will help us complete our missions. As the commanding officer of Typhon, I invite anyone who would like to give it a try to please apply! (Warning that quality of applications is strictly judged. Very strictly judged.) The link is in the image.

I tend to find that its lack of effort that stunts a new roleplay... I work extremely hard on plotlines and make an effort to attempt to include everyone but I tend to get the same reception - people make two or three posts and then stop posting.

In any case, I find the longest going roleplays of mine don't have a specific plotline they just have a mini-plot with three or four different aspects to them. My longest going roleplay has had about 5 possibly 6 mini events and people loyal to the roleplay have helped me get 600 pages worth of posts... I find if there's lots to do people stay loyal.

Hm... So sick, so tired, and that's when all my ideas hit me -.-
Since all the role-plays I've tried to make have failed, would someone like to co-own one with me? I can type up plot summary, and get someone to code things for free, but what I need is someone to deal with the people end of things. Which would be messaging people who haven't posted in a while, approving forms [ if we did forms... ], helping answer peoples questions [ obviously =P ], and adding people to the list of who's joined, and taking people off if they quit. These are the things that I'm not so great at, which is part of why both mine have dwindled.
So anyway, please, pretty please message me if you'd be willing- I don't want to spam up the thread with the conversation of it.
Oh, and I do have an idea too- kind of. It needs work... Anyway, it has to do with the destruction of a utopian society, and what happens to the people afterwards. Not much that I'm giving there but... >.< anyway, hope someone sees the potential here xD

Hm... I'd love to have a co-owner for an RP as well. Apparently(I still don't believe this xD) I think up good RP ideas, and so far I've had several with many excited people join. The problem is that I get sick often and I do get busy; I just can't keep up. ;-;

Anyways, back to my usual RP idea blurb.

You are doomed. There is thought to be no escaping this. In less then a year, your heart will stop beating, and you will die.
But there is a way. Not a way people approve of, but it is a way. You see, you are mortal. Most are. But some aren't. Some are immoral. These immortals are cocky, irritating, and uncaring people who look like teenagers. They don't care about mortals. But every so often, they create a miracle. You see, these immortals can make others immortal.
That is how you can survive. But they don't care about you, just another dying human. So, win their heart. Fake love. Is enchanting someone you don't love at all worth survival? You think so.

I've always wanted to do an RP where the characters are trying to win the hearts of others, when in fact it's just for their own gain. xD I made this an extreme case, cause I thought that might be easiest.

Kale's mind was off in its own world, a world not far from death. A world where the sound of Breeze's voice was nothing but a note in the tune of the song. The song that sang in his mind, that surrounded him. The song of death, one that sounded oddly similar to the song of the wind. But this wasn't the song of the wind. The song of the wind gave freedom, this one flashed freedom in your face and instead gave you death. Kale had the choice to follow the song or stay put and fight to stay alive. The song was tempting, it promised freedom, joy and happiness. But deep down Kale knew the cake was a lie, the promises weren't going to be fulfilled. He didn't know which path to take, which future to chose. Whether he allow himself to be freed of the pain or return to a world filled with death and be able return to Shila. So Kale stared at his two paths, deciding which one to take.

I limped across the forest, letting out growls of pain each time my paws hit the ground. I considered turning back, trying to save whatever was left of my old pack. No, I couldn't. They were dead. Even the ones who haven't died yet are trapped inside themselves, no longer their true selves instead rabid monsters. So in a way those ones were dead too, and they were going to be dead within a few days anyways. So I had nothing to turn back to, I could only go forward.

I heard a loud howl of pain from miles away. It must be another wolf dying, or being attacked. It set me in perspective of how I wasn't actually very far from where the disease was out breaking. I continued walking, trying to forget I ever heard that call for help. But in the back of my mind the dreadful sound replayed its self until I felt I was going to loose my mind. "You hear that! Another innocent wolf killed by disease! I hope your happy!" I shouted to the sky, my fur bristling. I didn't care if nobody was hear to hear me, I needed to get that out. Tears swelled in my eyes but I continued walking on, trying to hold back my tears.

Benny was surrounded by a beauteous forest, one he recognized to be his old home. At first he was confused, wondering why he wasn't with Paisley and Willow but soon he started thumping his tail in delight. The beagle bounded across the woodland until something caught his eye. It was his mother. Benny barked in excitement and raced over to her, burrowing his head in her thin fur and breathing in the scents of the forest around her. "Mama, I missed you. Why did you abandon me?" He asked her and she licked him on the forehead. "I never abandoned you, son." His mother told him.
Suddenly Benny's mother froze. He tensed when he saw the fear in her eyes. "Benny, you have to wake up." His mother ordered, her voice shaking. Benny cocked his head in confusion. "But I want to stay here, with you." He objected, still confused. "Benny, there are dogs that depend on you and you can't just leave them. Not yet." The female said, her voice sounded harsher then before. The puppy sighed when he saw the world around him start to fade. "Bye, Mama." He told her.

Benny's breathing was growing shallower and shallower and his heartbeat was slowing down. The rise and fall of his chest as he breathed happened less and less as he lay there. The acid scent of infection filled the air around him, coming from the wound on his chest. Benny was dying.
The pup's eyes opened gently, his breathing picking up once more as he looked around in confusion. His eyelids were heavy and he had to try his hardest not to give in. "Paisley..." Benny rasped, unable to say anymore as the strength was leaving him. He forced himself to stay conscious though as he knew he wasn't far from death's hands.

Ourpawprints wrote:Sandra searched through her memory to figure out what must have happened. She was in the boat, stuck in her prison cell of a cage not long before it happened. A loud, thunderous noise boomed suddenly that caused her ears to start ringing. Then she was thrown forward, her cage was rolling. The door of her cage swung open and the dog leaped out onto the top of the boat, and soon realized how the boat was tipping.

Sandra lunged at a rail and bit it, holding onto the rail to prevent herself from falling. For a few dreadful moments she hung there, terrified. But her grip gave way and she fell, clawing at the boat desperately as she fell. Her head began pulsing as it hit against one of the barrels rolling down. The shout of humans and the roar of the fire blocked out her hearing. She blacked out eventually, unable to remember what happened afterward.

Sandra sighed, putting two and two together. She must have fell into the ocean while she was unconscious, and washed up here. She examined herself, trying to see if she had any major injuries. It was really nothing more but cuts and bruises, all pretty minor. But her head ached horribly.

Alex opened her mouth to continue to demand an answer but stopped herself when she saw the look on her friend's face. She was terrified at this point of many things. Scared of the man, scared of whether or not Bronwyn and herself would be alright, scared that she had attacked the man and scared of the whole situation. Alex picked up the piece of bread, looking at it suspiciously then placing it on the ground. She blinked away the tears and struggled to her feet, letting out many grunts and groans of pain. Alex stumbled a few steps forward, almost falling backwards from her lack of coordination due to her head injury. She forced herself to stay balanced, completely aware of the fact she was in no condition to travel. Upon hearing Bronwyn's question Alex ran her fingers down her shoulder, where she had been shot a few times. She felt the bullet wound and nodded her head. "I... I think." The girl murmured, her voice sounding just as unconvinced as before. She leaned against one of the shelves, attempting to balance herself but her head was pounding dreadfully. Delia looked up at Alex, her eyes stricken with worry for her beloved owner. She could tell something was wrong, that Alex should not be moving around."Bronwyn, I don't think wrong of you. I... never would. I'm just... just confused about this whole situation. If you killed him you must have had a good reason to." Alex reassured her friend, although her voice trembling. The girl allowed herself to fall to the ground, landing awkwardly on the ground. "We... need to get moving. I'm sure somebody must have heard the gunshots... and if they did the police will be here soon." Alex insisted although she knew very well that there was no way they were going to be able to travel in her condition. She placed her hand on her head, attempting to sooth the pulsing pain. "It hurts." The girl whispered to herself, her thoughts swirling in her pounding mind.

"You shout it out,
But I can't hear a word you say
I'm talking loud not saying much
I'm criticized but all your bullets ricochet
You shoot me down, but I get up

I'm bulletproof, nothing to lose
Fire away, fire away
Ricochet, you take your aim
Fire away, fire away
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium"

Between school, my pets, homework, art and life I have not been able to get on cs often, so please don't be surprised if I'm not very active.

Re: The Semi-Literate+ and Roleplayer's Club

Ughhh, I hate the times when I get inspiration for an RP, but the details of the plot and such keep dancing out of my grasp. Currently I want to make an RP loosely based on the song Happy birthday by The Birthday Massacre. But I can't think up any good details and such.

Also, Involuntary illusions is still accepting one more member. But no one seems to be showing any interest.
