Personality:: John floats his way through life as best he can in district 9. He is laid back and uncomplicated. He is a fairly scrappy boy, but doesn't pick fights or actively avoid them like plague. He gets things done mostly, and rarely expends more effort than he needs to. He's not lazy... he is simply unconcerned. John doesn't laugh often and becomes cold easily due to his slight build.
History:: John was well-liked by his community, but only received love from his mother. His sister and father were cold to him at best, and at worst were downright abusive. Both died, which John was actually not too sorry about, and his mother only grieved because it was expected of her as a wife and mother. John and his mother live quietly together and make their way through live in district 9, existing without the help of a man in the family other than John. John has just taken out tesserae.
Family::Father Joe and sister Evelyn were killed in an automobile accident involving a drunken Peacekeeper when John was 10. They were not missed. Mother Fiona works an administrative job in the Justice Building.

Personality:: Galen is cynical and old. He is tired. He sits and frets on his porch and watches everything that goes on. He is very well informed. People come to him for advice or help, and he tolerates them. He has all the patience of an old, tired man-- which is to say, very little. If he likes you, he'll make a visible effort to be patient with you. Galen's mind functions a few speeds above everyone else's and this drives him crazy. He prefers to keep to himself, but if you can provide stimulating conversation, he'll be deeply gratified.
History:: Galen was a genetic engineer who produced mutts for the Capitol. He and his wife Nova engineered some of the most beautiful and most devious muttations the Capitol had ever seen. Galen had been doing this for years when a lab accident involving caustic agents cost him his wife and damaged his hands. He consults occasionally at the lab but now is left to his own devices under a somewhat forced retirement. Galen was at the top of his game when the accident occurred and has never forgiven anybody for what it cost him. Despite his prickly attitude towards the world, he has established a network of informants who keep him up to date on goings-on in District 5 and thereabouts.
Family:: Galen was an only child and his parents died long ago.
