You shouldn't buy any animal that has been raised by hand, it's not good, they do not learn to socialize with other animals of the same species so may have big problems in the future with animals of the same species. People say they are tamer but it doesn't mean they actually are, animals that are raised in an environment often handled by humans can be as tame.

This is one of the reasons people have primates as pets. They are taken from their mother at birth and both animals suffer mental scars. In the future they struggle to survive if introduced to other animals of the same species. (Got this example from Monkey World which is a primate rescue rehabilitation center).

They seem really cute though. You could give them fruit and veg with some seeds and nuts for a few days. Or if you have a hamster then hamster food is okay. (Do not feed avocardo! Bad for most animals). Cereal is also okay to add in, mine love ricepops and cornflakes (cereal without alot of sugar is best) They could eat dog food but it might make them a bit hyper as it might contain slot of chemicals which are not good for animals. (If it's Bakers dog food do not feed it to your rats OR DOG! it's full of chemical rubbish and has actually killed a few dogs because of this).

Good luck with your ratties :)

The last good rat breeder in my area recently stopped breeding! ;n;

I will probably end up getting 2 little females from the animal humane society, just I want to know everyones opinions about getting rats from animal rescues. I'm for sure never getting a ratty from a pet shop again... I learned the hard way with Zeus. :c

.. *Flail*

So.. went to Timberlake today, and of course, I always look at the rats.

They had a friggin rex baby. I want it so bad. ;-;

but.. the one that caught my eye was this jumbo male. Looks almost identical to my Sharkie, except obviously male and MUCH much bigger. I picked him up and at first he was absolutely /terrified/ - but I flipped him onto his back and rubbed his belly and he went into a trance haha. He LOVED it. If I can dig up enough money to buy another cage, I may just buy him and one of the amber hooded males they have. ;-; such cuties.. but that male stole my heart.

I know buying from a pet store isn't good - I got Syria from them & she has sniffles but we're slowly overcoming that with medication. Most of their males have damage - such as open gashes and so on.. so I feel really bad for them.

Ever since Fluke, I've been in love with male rats. So much more docile than my girls..

Also, we ended up keeping Sadie & Simeon. Sadie adjusted to Syria and they haven't gotten into any fights.. I just can't bare to part with them. ;-;

Syria and Simeon are staying super-small sized, though, which I find odd.. while Sharkie and Sadie are double the size. I bought all of them as small rats, though. I dunno.

I introduced my rats to my hamster today. Maizey didn't seem to care. My ray Jacob jumped on her then got told off and didn't do it again, my other rat Marlo kept away and Pablo, my largest and feral rat went over and started to groom her then rolled on his back submissivly. It was so cute :D

You should probably be careful about letting them meet, it is not unusual that rats see smaller animals as prey and kill them.

Hello, sorry to just jump right in but I need some help.
My rat Dandi, has been having lots of seizures for the past few weeks, ( She's had seven or eight in total. )
Also when ever shes on my lap or I put her on a table she goes limp and just falls.
Also she's been biting and avoiding being touched when shes in her cage.
Lastly she just lays down randomly if she finds a comfy spot and clothes her eyes. Shes been sneazing a lot too.
Any of you have ideas of whats going on?

I know, I want to work training animals got films in the future so I'm learning to introduce species correctly. Obviously I wouldn't ever trust them together, i am just teaching them to co-exhaust together. :)
