Falco made his way outside, drawing stares towards him. But he did not care. He walked right through Esgaroth, ignoring all the people that had gathered to watch him, and out on to the path that led to Mirkwood. Suddenly, he heard a familiar voice behind him:
“Falco! Wait!”
He turned around with a slight smile.
“Billy” he put his hand on his shoulder “You cannot come. I have decided. I am going in there” he pointed at the forest “Why don't you stay behind?”
“You are surely joking, aren't you? I will never leave you, Falco! Come on, lets go home”
“No” he smiled slightly “I am not joking. I am going, and it is better for you not to come with me. Bye, Billy”
The poor farmer stared for a moment, completely confused.
“Well I am coming with you!” he exclaimed, catching up “I don't care about the forest, you are my best friend, and I will go with you till you decide to come back”
Falco shook his head sadly, but he was glad he would have some company. He felt completely lost, as if there was something right in front of him that he could not see, but that he needed to follow. And he was not sure whether they would be coming back.

That night they camped by the river, not daring to make a fire. The trees seemed to moan and groan, as if they were talking to each other in some secret language. Billy was scared to death, and was hiding under his blanket, trembling. However, Falco felt strange, as if he had just returned somewhere that he knew. The sounds of the trees did not seem unfamiliar, and he sat there wondering why all these thoughts came to his mind. Suddenly, he felt dizzy, and the world around him seemed to fade away, leaving the same clearing as before. The water trickled around it, and the trees were tall and beautiful. Falco stood up, and this time the voice came almost instantly,
“Good job, Falco. Now all you must do is follow the river, and you will find your way. I will be waiting for you...” the voice seemed to be right behind him, he almost thought he could feel the air on his ear where the man was talking. Falco felt comforted, and wanted to turn around and see who it was, but at once the vision disappeared, leaving only the starry sky above him.
He rubbed his forehead and walked down towards the river, gazing at the calm water. Suddenly, he looked at his reflection, surprised. He had changed a lot since last time he saw himself. Now his blond hair was longer, almost shoulder-length. He looked much older, as if suddenly he was an adult and not a child any more. His blue eyes shimmered with determination as he smiled. Yes, he liked his new appearance.

They awoke early in the morning, and continued to make their way into the forest. It got darker and darker by the minute, and all they could do was follow the sound of the river. The hours passed slowly, and a moment arrived when Billy could no longer see. Falco discovered that he had a good night vision, and leaded them even further. Now they could not tell whether it was day or night, they slept when they were tired, but after some time they began to watch the camp in turns, as strange noises ran out in the night, like squeals and cracks. Billy obviously wanted to go back, but remained loyal to Falco, who did not have any more visions. However, he did not give up hope, and kept walking and walking, till they were thoroughly lost.
One night, they were camping at the edge of a river, as always. It was Billy's turn to carry out watch, and he was beginning no doze off, when a crack in front of him made him wake with a startled whimper. He was about to wake Falco, when he noticed something white on his arm. Billy tried to remove it, but it stuck on to his hand. Annoyed, he stood up to shake it off, but suddenly, he realized in horror that he was absolutely covered in white web, and his friend was too.
“Falco! Falco, wake up! We are being attacked!”
The elf stood up instantly, getting even more tangled in the web. It was everywhere, and had been cleverly placed to trap them. He desperately reached out to where he kept his sword, and began cutting the sticky string, in the meanwhile throwing a knife at Billy. They were almost out when a deadly crack was heard above.
Falco raised his gaze, to see the creature he most dreaded:
Spider

He felt his body freeze with fear. He saw the enormous pincers and the sting come towards him at an amazing speed. Time slowed down. Falco was terrified, he could not make the slightest move. His common sense told him to fight against the monster, but he felt as if he were chained, unable to move. He heard Billy shout something, but he barely understood. Just before the spider was upon him, he reacted, picking up the sword and sticking it in the spider's soft belly. It made a squealing sound, and attacked again, but Falco was quick and sliced its head off, killing the monster.
He rolled on his side, breathing heavily. He could hear Billy's voice somewhere in the distance, but it sounded like a faint buzz.
Suddenly, everything cleared up, and he could see a scene in front of him. It was in a forest. There were elves running with bows and swords, fighting against some giant spiders that were attacking what seemed like the elves' home. Many fell, dead. Others killed spiders. For some reason, Falco was in a corner, next to the river. He wasn't fighting with the others, but hiding. Why was he hiding? He didn't have time to think about it. Suddenly, a huge spider came towards him, tearing at the rows of elven soldiers. It seemed to be looking for him. But why for him? Why not after a powerful elven soldier?.
The beast was closer by the minute. Falco was not sure what to do. He didn't experience the fear that he had with the other spider, but he felt defenceless, as if he was very small. Just when he thought he was going to die, as it was only a few feet away, an arrow pierced the creature's neck. It seemed to be exactly accurate, but the animal did not stop and continued coming towards him. Falco tried to back away, but he found the wall behind him. Just when the stinger was about to pierce his throat, a figure leapt between him and the spider. It was tall, and he could only see the back of the person. “Drego!” it said to him as the figure unsheathed a knife. For some reason, Falco understood these words. The man was telling him to flee. He scrambled to his feet and ran in the opposite direction as fast as he could. He felt strange, as if he was smaller, maybe only two or three, but Falco ignored this and continued running. Suddenly, from behind a bush, another spider attacked him, but the boy stood there, not knowing quite what to do.
“Flee!” he heard the voice again, and this time didn't doubt. He ran backwards, away from the spider. But something went wrong. There was a sudden splash, and he found himself pushed by a current. Falco uselessly tried to swim, but his vision blurred, and he knew no more.

“Falco! Wake up!” It was Billy.
Falco sat up instantly, his blue eyes wide. “Ada! Ungol!*” he did not know these words, yet he did know them. It was a strange feeling. He groaned, trying to get up.
“What are you talking about?” Billy watched him with huge, frightened eyes “I think you had a nightmare, that's all”
“No, Billy. I have been told for too long that that was a dream” He suddenly remembered the night when he had been at the fishermen's house “That was no nightmare, it was real” he stood up, frowning. Now everything seemed more clear to him, as if he had completed a piece of the puzzle. Who was that man that had saved him? Why were the spiders looking only for him? These questions still remained unanswered, but he was sure that when he reached the place he was seeking, though he didn't know where it was, he would find out.

Theoden wrote:Where now are the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the harp on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.
Who shall gather the smoke of the deadwood burning,
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?

They began walking again, swords in hand. They jumped at the slightest noise, but, for now, nothing seemed to attack. After a few hours they took a break , as they were completely exhausted. When Billy pulled out the bag of food, they discovered that there were not many provisions left. Falco looked around, but he could not see anything that looked edible.
“What do we do now?” Billy asked, frowning.
Falco shrugged “Keep going. I know I have to reach this place, though I do not know where it is. I'm sure it is not far.
His friend nodded with a tired expression on his face, lying down on the river bank. Falco did the same as he gazed up at the canopy of leaves above him, hoping that they were nearly arriving at their destination.
“Do you think we will ever go back, to Esgaroth?” Billy's voice broke the silence “I do not like these woods, they are too closed up”
“Do you really want to?” Falco sighed “I prefer to die of hunger in the forest than to serve that stupid blacksmith again”
“But... you can't say that. He is your dad! I am sure he misses you”
Falco narrowed his eyes as he sat up.
“Listen. I have been suspecting something strange. Why do I look like this?” He pointed at his face
“That old blacksmith isn't my father, Billy. I am sure he isn't. It was only a lie to have me working there. Otherwise, why does he never talk about my “mother”? Why do I look so different from the rest of the town?” he sighed “All that is gold does not glitter” he whispered thoughtfully as he lay down again. Billy gulped and shook his head, feeling his belly rumble with hunger.
“I really hope we arrive soon” he thought to himself, dozing to sleep.
What neither of them noticed was the strange, glinting eyes that were watching them from the distance, hidden behind the trees.

Falco awoke, shivering. He quickly stood up, noticing that something was wrong.
“Billy, we have to carry on” he glanced around him as he tried to wake his friend, who grunted and got up, seeming to be more asleep than anything.
“Falco, what is wrong with your ears?” he asked sleepily.
“My ears? They are perfectly fine. Come on, we have no time for jokes” He began leading the way, but all the time he could sense something strange. He turned around several times, but all he could see was the twisted trees, ivy and the river. Without knowing why, Falco gripped his sword, loosening it from his sheath as they walked on and on. Billy was walking in his sleep, but Falco was wide awake, his blue eyes scanning every detail in the landscape.

Suddenly, a roar interrupted the silence, followed by many battle cries. They turned around, to face what seemed like a band of orcs. They were filthy and covered in cobwebs, and their sharp teeth clanked with hunger as they advanced towards the two friends. Falco unsheathed his sword, a new courage growing inside him. Although they were clearly outnumbered, he was sure that he could win, completely sure. Just as the orcs reached them, he smiled with determination.
Time seemed to slow down. Falco did not realize that he was fighting like a truly experienced warrior, delivering slices and cuts to all the orcs that dared come near him. The sword flowed naturally in his hand, and he was much more agile than his enemies, giving him a great advantage.
But this did not do, as the orcs were many, and streamed out of the forest, attacking them. Billy fought bravely, but could not win, and the monsters seemed to be going for Falco, as they all formed a circle around the elf, ignoring his friend.
When he noticed where he was, it was too late. He had killed many, but not enough, and the orcs cackled evilly, walking slowly in and shutting the circle. Falco held out his sword, and sliced the first one's head off. This, of course, made them angry, and they charged towards him, their rusty picks in hand.
Falco managed to kill a few, but soon found himself on the floor, the sword of the enemy coming down towards him. He quickly rolled out the way, jumping to his feet, but there were too many of the monsters attacking. Soon he found out that he could not escape the swords and picks for much longer. Falco looked around desperately while the orcs came even closer, knowing that he would loose unless some miracle happened.
Suddenly, he heard the whistle of an arrow, that pierced the orc that was closest to him in the neck.
Falco turned around, surprised, to see a group of figures on horseback. They galloped elegantly from the depths of the forest on their white horses, firing arrows at the enemy. Frightened, they tried to escape, but the elves were too quick. Before long, a pile of dead orcs was lying on the floor.
Falco stared for a moment, leaning on his sword. Everything had been so quick that he hadn't had time to think about what had just happened. Then he breathed deeply, not knowing what to say to the figures that had so kindly helped him. He hoped they were not enemies, but he had the feeling that they weren't. They sat on their horses quietly, without a sound, watching something that perhaps only they could see.
He noticed Billy walk back towards the trees, obviously scared by the silent figures, but Falco stayed where he was, bowing and sheathing his sword. There was an uncomfortable silence, where nothing but the horses shifted. Finally, a soft click of hooves broke the silence.
Falco looked up at a cloaked figure that had rode in front of the group towards him. It was a young looking elf, with fair hair and deep blue eyes that met his gaze at once. He carried a finely carved wooden bow, and a sword that was faintly familiar. The elf was dressed in a dark green tunic and a brown cloak, like the others, but had had a sense of royalty to him that the rest of the company didn't have.
Falco gulped, shivering slightly. He had a deep cut in his left arm where one of the orc swords had reached him, and a tingling pain had began spreading up his shoulder, making him grit his teeth, clutching the hilt of his sword. Falco noticed that he was carefully observed by the figure, that, mounted on his horse, looked down, frowning as if something was wrong, finally, he spoke.
“Welcome to Mirkwood, Falco and Billy” The elf's voice finally broke the awkward silence, making him sigh with relief. “You may come with us now, and we will lead you to safety” He signalled to an elf, who led two horses towards them and gave him the reins.
Falco got up slowly, pain running through his arm. The leader of the company seemed to notice, and a worried expression covered his face.
“Spider poison. We must get you to the healers as quickly as possible” Holding the horse, he awaited till Falco mounted, and then gave the reins of the other mount to Billy.
To Falco's surprise, his friend pushed the elf's hand away rudely, staring at him with an angry expression.
“Who are you, and what do you want? We have already been attacked several times, and my friend is hurt” Billy seemed ridiculous, standing under the horse and glaring at the elf, who merely smiled, pulling his horse back and ignoring the human's bad manners.
“We must make haste” he said to the company, who turned their horses and began cantering through the forest. Billy, annoyed, mounted his horse, and stayed at the back of the group with Falco and the leader . Just before they set off, the elf turned with a wry smile.
“ As if you wanted to know, Billy Robinson” he hesitated, glancing at Falco with an unreadable expression , and then sighed, turning back to Billy.
“I am Legolas, king of Mirkwood”
((Any suggestions on things I should change or make better?))

(umm...not that I can think of. Perhaps kill Billy off later? It would be interesting to explore Falco's personality when dealing with a loss that could lead to depression. And Legolas could also disappear at some point, because he and Gimli passed over the sea several decades after the War of the Ring, I think around the time Aragorn died but I'm not sure.)
